Chapter 1: The Offering
The cold seeped through the thin fabric of her dress, a chilling embrace that had nothing to do with the night air. Lin Yue kept her head bowed, her black hair falling like a curtain to hide her face. Around her, the other chosen girls whimpered, their fear a palpable scent on the wind. She focused on being still, on being small, on projecting nothing but the terrified docility expected of a human offering to the vampires. This was the moment. The culmination of years of brutal training, of suppressed instincts, of learning to wear a mask as her true skin. The grand, oppressive gates of Castle Van Zo loomed ahead, black iron etched against a moonless sky. This was the lion's den, the heart of enemy territory. And she, a wolf in sheep's clothing, was walking right in. A hand squeezed hers briefly. It was Anna, a girl she'd been chained to during the journey. Her eyes were wide with terror. "We're going to die in there," she whispered, her voice trembling. Lin Yue met her gaze for a second, then quickly looked down again. "Just be quiet. Do as they say," she murmured back, the perfect advice for a frightened human. Inside, her mind was a whirlwind. This is why I'm here. To ensure fewer of us die. The gates creaked open, revealing a courtyard of stark beauty and profound silence. A tall, severe-looking vampire in butler's attire stood there, his eyes scanning them like a farmer inspecting cattle. "Line up. Follow me. Do not speak unless spoken to," he intoned, his voice devoid of all warmth. They were led into a grand hall. The air was thick with the scent of old blood, polished stone, and a faint, cloying perfume. Tapestries depicting scenes of vampiric glory and human subjugation hung on the walls. Lin Yue's senses, heightened by her latent heritage, screamed at the proximity of so many predators. She could feel their cold, hungry gazes from the shadows of the upper balconies. This was the Choosing. The high-ranking vampires of the court would pick their new "attendants" from this batch. Lin Yue focused on her breathing, on keeping her heart rate steady. A racing heart was a beacon of fear. One by one, girls were selected and led away, some with cries of despair, others in catatonic silence. Then, a vampire clad in elegant, dark armor—a member of the Vampire Guard—stopped in front of her. He sneered, a fang glinting. "This one looks weak. Her blood must be thin." Lin Yue forced herself to tremble, a fine, convincing shiver. Perfect. Underestimate me. Just as the Guard reached for her, a new voice cut through the hall, cool and authoritative, silencing the faint murmurs instantly. "I will take this one Every head turned. Standing at the top of a grand staircase was a figure of impossible grace and power. Silver hair, blood-red eyes, features so perfectly sculpted they seemed otherworldly. It was him. Prince Van Zo. The hall fell into a dead silence. The Guard who had been about to claim Lin Yue immediately bowed low and retreated without a word. The Prince's gaze was fixed solely on her. It felt like being pinned by twin spears of ice, seeing through every layer of her disguise, down to the very core of her soul. Lin Yue's carefully constructed composure shattered. For a terrifying second, she forgot to breathe. He knows. He has to know. This is it. Her training screamed at her to look away, to show fear, but she was trapped in that crimson gaze. He descended the stairs, each step measured and silent. The crowd of vampires parted for him like waves. He stopped before her, so close she could feel the unnatural coolness radiating from his body. He didn't touch her. He simply studied her, his expression unreadable. "Look at me," he commanded, his voice soft yet leaving no room for disobedience. Trembling for real now, Lin Yue lifted her head, meeting those terrifying, beautiful eyes. A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips. It held no warmth, only a spark of profound curiosity. "What is your name?" he asked. "L-Lin Yue," she stammered, hating the break in her voice. "Lin Yue," he repeated, as if tasting the word. He then turned to the stern butler. "She will be mine. Prepare the chambers adjoining my own." A collective, sharp intake of breath echoed through the hall. This was unprecedented. A human, a mere blood servant, chosen directly by the Prince himself, and to be housed next to him? It was an honor that felt like a death sentence. As the Prince turned and walked away, the weight of his attention finally lifted, leaving Lin Yue feeling cold and exposed. The butler gestured for her to follow a different path than the other girls. She walked, her legs weak, her mind reeling. She had passed the first test. She was inside. But as she was led away from the common fate, one chilling thought echoed in her mind: He didn't choose me at random. He was waiting for me. But why?
