Chapter 1: The invitation
Lira tightened her grip on the letter, her fingers pressing into the delicate parchment. The official wax seal had already been broken, but the weight of the invitation still pressed down on her like an unshakable force. A diplomatic meeting between Alphas—a standard political gathering meant to maintain peace and balance among the packs. But something in her gut told her this was more than just another formality.
Her wolf stirred uneasily, restless with anticipation. Lira had been trying to ignore the feeling clawing at her ever since she read the invitation, but it was undeniable. She would meet her mate there.
The thought sent a shiver down her spine, a mixture of excitement and dread settling in her chest. She had always imagined what it would be like to find her mate, to feel the bond snap into place and pull her toward the one destined for her. But the unknown terrified her. Would he think she was weak? Or would she be unworthy of him? Or worse… what if he belonged to another world she could never be part of?
She took a deep breath, pushing those thoughts aside. Whatever fate had in store, she would face it head-on, just as she always had.
The journey to the meeting was uneventful, yet tension crackled in the air. The closer she got, the heavier the weight in her chest became. The meeting was being held on neutral ground, in the grand hall of the Western Pack, known for its wealth and strategic power. By the time she arrived, the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting the stone building in golden hues.
Stepping inside, she scanned the room filled with high-ranking Alphas, their Betas, and a few warriors standing guard. Conversations hummed around her, but she barely registered them. Her wolf paced restlessly in her mind, alert and searching.
And then, she saw him.
The moment her gaze landed on him, the world seemed to tilt. A force unlike anything she had ever felt slammed into her chest, knocking the air from her lungs. Time slowed, and everything else faded into the background. Her heart pounded violently, her wolf howling in recognition.
Mate.
Lira’s breath hitched, a sudden surge of heat rushing through her veins. Her fingers curled into fists as she fought to keep her face impassive, but deep inside, a storm raged. She hadn’t expected this—not here, not now. But there was no doubt.
It was him.
Christopher.
She knew of him—everyone did. He was powerful, commanding, the heir to one of the largest and most influential packs. But none of that mattered in this moment. What mattered was the raw, undeniable truth that settled in her bones.
He was her mate.
Her gaze locked with his, and for a split second, something flickered in his dark eyes—recognition. Awareness. But then, just as quickly, his expression turned to stone.
Lira’s stomach twisted.
Before she could react, before she could even begin to process what was happening, he turned away. His posture stiffened, his jaw clenched as he forced his attention elsewhere. A calculated move. A deliberate dismissal.
Pain flared in her chest, the bond already tightening its grip, but she forced herself to remain still. She refused to let him see how much it affected her.
Her wolf snarled in protest, demanding she go to him, demand answers—demand that he acknowledge what they both knew was true. But she swallowed the urge, instead standing tall, her expression unreadable. If he wanted to pretend, then so could she.
With steady steps, she turned and walked away, her heart pounding with every move.
The meeting had just begun, but the battle between them had already started.
