The clattering of pots and pans roused Tom and he woke slowly. Seeing the bedside clock, he was amazed to discover it was already half past ten. He realized he"d left the overhead lamp on, but the light streaming through the window counteracted its glow. The strong and pleasant aroma of frying bacon assaulted his nostrils. He looked around, taking a few moments to remember where he was. He saw the pad, checked his notes, and was surprised to see how accurate and complete his summary was. He"d tabulated all their assets and liabilities and given a concise account of the history and nature of his marital difficulties, culminating in Anne"s relationship with his brother.
