Now I needed to help her.

Sophie Olivia has always been right about alcohol, s*x, and relationships. When she told me I needed to sleep, deep down, I doubted her, but I never said it. This was the longest I had slept in a long time, and it was also the most alcohol I had ever consumed. We got to her house around 8:30 p.m., and now I was waking up at 9 a.m. “Olivia!” I called, but the apartment was quiet. I pulled myself up, but I felt so light and weak that I almost wanted to lie back down. “Olivia!” I called again, this time louder. Still nothing. Had she gone somewhere? Why didn't she wake me up? I pushed the thick blue blanket away from my legs and looked down. I was wearing only my pants. Last night was still a mystery. After we got into the cab, that was the last thing I could remember. I had been completely drunk. Olivia must have taken off my gown and bra for me. I almost smiled. She had done one of those little girl things for me. I usually took off my bra whenever I wanted to sleep because I hated sleeping in one. It was so uncomfortable. I got out of bed and walked straight to the kitchen. Without entering, I opened the door and looked inside. “Olivia?” My voice came back to me from the empty kitchen. I headed to the sitting room, but it was just as quiet. “She must have gone out.” I sighed and returned to the bedroom. As I walked in, already accepting that she was gone, I noticed a sheet of paper on her makeup table. I picked it up and read it. “Hi girl, sleep well. I am going to the clubhouse with my new guy. You have already drunk yourself, and moreover, clubbing isn't your night. Gradually, you will learn that too. It's part of the game if you want to successfully nurture your emotions and put them into control…” I stared at the note. Does it mean I slept all alone in this house? I looked around the room, and my eyes landed on the mirror. My makeup from yesterday was still all over my face, messy and disjointed. I definitely needed a bath. On my way to the bathroom, I thought about calling Olivia. I picked up my phone and dialled her number. Switched off. I tried again. The same thing. I threw the phone onto the bed and went into the bathroom. Whenever I was alone at home, especially in the bathroom, I loved to hum and sing my favourite songs. It was also my favourite place to dance under the shower. I moved my body in random directions, enjoying the feeling of being alone. Then I raised my voice and sang along with the song playing in my head. I burst out laughing when I caught sight of my own dancing in the human-sized mirror at the far left. “I wish… I had someone who would love me the way I want.” “I wish… I had someone who could read the way I feel.” “I wish…” I stopped when I heard a loud bang at the front door. A few seconds later, it happened again. Someone was knocking. “I am coming!” It would be difficult for anyone to hear me. The bathroom was deep inside the apartment. But before I could say anything else, the knocking stopped. I hurriedly finished my shower and dried my body with a towel. If I started applying cream to my skin, it would take even longer. I wrapped the towel around my breasts and walked towards the front door. I was certain it wasn't Olivia. My plan was simple: open the door, have a short conversation with whoever was there, then return to the bedroom. “Hello…” I opened the door and saw Olivia's boyfriend standing there. Alex. “Hi.” I smiled automatically. “I didn't know you had such a lovely voice.” His eyes moved from my long, wet hair down to my neck. They paused briefly at my breasts before travelling down to my feet. I felt uncomfortable under his stare. “Thanks.” I was already preparing to close the door. “I came to see Olivia. I don't know why she isn't picking up my calls.” “Oh. She isn't around.” “Where did she go?” My mind immediately went back to the note. The clubhouse. Her new guy. What was wrong with Olivia? I looked at Alex again. He was handsome. Maybe he may think that, that was why I stared a little too long. But that wasn't the case. I was saying in my mind, why would she leave this handsome guy. He noticed. “You haven't answered my question, and you're busy staring at me.” I quickly looked away. I needed to lie. I mean, I had to lie to protect my girlfriend's relationship. “She said she went to see her mum.” I nodded, hoping he would believe me. “Her mum? The same mum she hasn't spoken to for so many years?” His expression changed. “You're hiding her from me.” Before I could respond, he pushed the door with his strength. I quickly stepped aside. “I am not lying. She isn't inside the house. If you want to check, check.” I remained by the door as he walked inside. There was something aggressive about the way he moved, and it made me uncomfortable. It didn't take long before I heard doors slamming inside the apartment. Was he trying to smoke Olivia out? I couldn't smile or laugh. If he saw me doing that, he might think I was making fun of him. I stood there silently, waiting for him to come back. About five minutes later, Alex came back, but instead of walking out through the door the way he had entered, he sat down. “I told you, she isn't inside. She went to see her mum.” “Then why would she switch off her phone? She had only gone to one place, and this isn't the first time she has done this.” The way he settled into the chair told me he wasn't planning to leave anytime soon. I became uncomfortable again. Being alone in the same house with a man who wasn't my boyfriend already felt strange, especially with nothing but a towel covering my body. “Since she isn't around and I will soon be going out…” Alex looked at me immediately. His gaze held me in place. “You can go wherever you want to go. I am here waiting for her.” I swallowed. This wasn't my house. I didn't have the authority to tell him to leave. I stood there helplessly, then decided the only thing I could do was go into the bedroom and lock the door while I got dressed. I turned to leave. Just as I was about to pass through the sitting room, his voice stopped me. This time, his tone was much milder. “Can I have your number? That way, whenever her phone is switched off, I can reach you.” “Sure.” I answered quickly, hoping that once I gave him my number, he would finally leave. He held out his phone, and I dialled my number. After giving the phone back to him, I waited. He looked at the screen and smiled as he saved my number. Why was he smiling like that? I didn't bother to ask. He raised his head and caught me looking at him. Another smile appeared on his face. This guy shouldn't get the wrong idea. I wanted him out of here, nothing more. “I thought you wanted to leave?” I gestured towards the exit. “I am waiting for my girlfriend.” He leaned back slightly. “If you don't mind, I can follow you to the bedroom and help you get dressed, since you've been inviting me with your eyes.” “No. No. No.” The words came out before I could even think. The more I thought about what he had just said, the more uncomfortable I became. He had completely misunderstood my staring. I needed to get away from him. If Olivia heard about this, how would she take it? I hurried into the bedroom and locked the door behind me. Finally, I could breathe. I wanted to feel that sense of comfort that came whenever I could take off the towel and put on my clothes without worrying about anyone watching me. I was about to start drying my hair when I heard the sound of a car downstairs. Olivia's apartment was on the fourth floor, and from the bedroom window, I could see the entrance to the entire building. I walked towards the window. My eyes widened. It was Olivia. She was getting out of a black Mercedes-Benz. A man stepped out of the car too, and the two of them started talking. I immediately reached for my phone and dialled her number. Still switched off. Alex must have caught her. Or he was about to. I had told him she went to see her mum, and now he was going to see her coming home from the club. My heart started pounding. If Alex found out Olivia had gone to the club, she would blame me for letting him into her apartment. I stood by the window, my mind filling with different questions. To make things worse, Olivia couldn't see me from where she was. I would have spoken to her. “Why are you worried?” I said to myself. I took a deep breath. If the man with Olivia drove away, only Olivia would come inside. All I needed to do was wait until she entered the sitting room and saw her boyfriend. Then I could quickly say, “Olivia, your boyfriend has been waiting for you. I told him you went to your mum's place.” Olivia was smart. She would understand immediately. With that plan in my head, my heartbeat slowly began to settle. Then I saw something that destroyed the entire plan. The man held Olivia's hand. Together, they started walking towards the building. “Oh my goodness.” What was Olivia doing? How was I supposed to avoid this disaster? I quickly put on my gown. Olivia had suggested a way out for my dad's operation. She had helped me when I desperately needed a solution. Now I needed to help her. I rushed out of the bedroom. When I reached the sitting room, Alex drinking a glass of strong alcoholic wine. “You are about to go,” he said as he stood up. “Let me drop you with my car. I was even planning to go downstairs.” He adjusted his shirt. Everything suddenly felt like a time bomb inside my head. How was I supposed to stop it before it exploded? My heart slammed against my ribs.
