A whole night...

Sophie The hospital room was empty when I walked in. My eyes swept across the four walls. If Dad isn't here... then he's in the operating theatre. What happened again? My chest tightened. "Doctor!" I was about to run out when I heard the sound of a toilet flushing. "Dad!" I stopped as he opened the bathroom door. "You frightened me." I placed a hand on my chest. "How? I'm fine." "If you're not in this room, where else would you be?" I didn't finish the sentence. In my mind, the only other place was the operating theatre. The moment he sat down, his eyes landed on my bandaged fingers. "What happened to your hand?" His voice was filled with concern. "Oh... it's just a minor accident at school. I'm okay." "If it's only a minor accident, why is it bandaged?" "I... touched something sharp." "What are you saying?" My mind drifted straight to Mr Damien, and I completely lost track of the conversation for some few seconds. "Oh..." I pressed my lips together. He was waiting for an answer. "Sophie, you've looked worried since you came in. I'm much better now. The doctor even said I might be discharged this week." I sat on the stainless-steel chair, gripping its handles so tightly that my fingers hurt. Dad slowly got to his feet in his dark brown patient gown. "I'm fine. Can't you see?" He even turned around with a smile. "Thank you for everything you've done for me." How could I tell him what was really bothering me? He would never approve. He didn't even like the idea of me dating someone my own age now when I'm still in college, let alone a man much older than me. "I... wow... that's great. I just wanted to check on you." He opened his arms and hugged me. "I know I've put you through so much." He paused. I could feel his warm breath against my ear before he quietly added, "A good father shouldn't place this kind of burden on his daughter's shoulders." "Dad, stop. You're not a burden to me. I want you in my life." He nodded. As hard as he tried to hold back his tears, they still escaped. "I should go now, Dad." As I reached the door, I suddenly remembered. "Dad, I deposited some money with the hospital. Whatever you need, they'll provide it." His eyes widened, and the smile I loved so much spread across his face, showing his bright white teeth. "I have to thank your boss. If I don't, I'll be so ungrateful." My grip on the doorframe tightened. "Dad, get well first. Forget about my boss for now." "How can I? He helped save my life." "Dad..." I gently cut him off. "I'll pass your thanks to him. Just focus on getting better." I closed the door but didn't walk away. If this had been my own room, I would have leaned against the door for support. Dad wants to thank my boss. My boss... Or my sugar daddy? And I still couldn't get him out of my head. I needed to talk to Olivia. How had she managed not to fall in love with her own sugar daddy? ****** Four hours later I was wearing one of Mr Damien's gifts. The wind was much colder up here, more than seventy floors above the ground. I wished the cold wind and the alcohol in my system could wash away these feelings for a man I could never truly have. "This is your second bottle of wine. You're almost done with it, and you're not even using a glass. What's going on? Is everything okay? Or is there something you're finding hard to tell me?" As I wiped the corner of my eye, Olivia kept staring at me. "What are you hiding from me?" Before answering, I took another mouthful of wine and placed the bottle on the table. "I think... I'm starting to fall for him." I slowly looked up at her. "You mean Mr Damien?" Who else could I mean? "He made it clear. No love. He'll never allow any sugar baby to fall for him,” I added. The tears I had been holding back finally spilled over. They streamed down my cheeks, and my nose began to run. Olivia looked at me with sympathy. The silence between us was loud, filled with everything I couldn't say. She moved her chair closer and held both of my hands. "Do you know why he's like that?" she asked gently. I shook my head. "It's easy to understand. In his messy, high-stakes world, a sugar baby is probably his only escape. Love is a trap. It complicates everything. Why ruin a simple arrangement with something as dangerous as love?" She paused thoughtfully. "Or maybe... there's something deeper. A secret he doesn't want anyone to know. Who knows?" She shrugged. "A secret?" How could a man who had wealth, power, and looks that women admired be trapped by a secret? "Don't overthink it, Sophie. Every sugar baby I've known or heard about who fell for him got fired. Don't cross that line." "You mean if I fall for him, he'll just throw me away like he did the others?" "Sophie, if you still need his money, and your dad is still in the hospital, don't let him know how you feel. Keep those feelings to yourself." She gently rubbed the back of my hand. She was right. I still needed the money. Dad was still in the hospital. Who knew what tomorrow would bring? The real question was... Could I actually hide my feelings? "Come on," Olivia said. "Let's drink. There's no point crying anymore. It's natural to develop feelings. You're human. But let these tears be the end of it. As for me, I learned to control my heart a long time ago." I nodded, listening carefully. She had been in this kind of life longer than I had. It would be foolish not to learn from her. "Sophie, let's go home. What you need now is sleep." She stood up. Slowly I stood up. Inside the lift, she suddenly asked, "Do you blame me for introducing you to Mr Damien?" "How could I? If it wasn't for Mr Damien, my dad might not even be alive." "That's my girl." She patted my back. "You'll get through these feelings." Just as we were about to get into the cab, my phone beeped. I sat down and checked the message. "We're spending tomorrow night together on my private yacht. I'll send you the outfit and the address. From your sugar daddy.” A whole night... With him?
