CHAPTER 1 — Everything starts here
It all started off great. In fact, it was so hot that we went to the beach. The drive was great, but when we got there, we noticed something odd. There were sharks near the shore. We knew something wasn’t right, but we went in anyway.
We started swimming away from the sharks when suddenly I noticed a giant wave washing toward us. I was so scared because I knew that wasn’t normal. Becky and I got out in time. We tried warning the others, shouting as loud as we could, but by then it was too late. The wave took them under. They washed away as I yelled, “Nooo!”
Becky just sat on the sand and cried. I ran to hug her tight. We had just lost our friends. However, I knew that wasn’t a normal wave. Something must have caused it. And no matter what, I was going to find out what did.
So there I went, into the deep. I knew that if I was going to find out what really happened that day, I needed to get a boat. Becky, on the other hand, was too sad to come along. I didn’t know what to do. Where was I going to find a boat?
Then I remembered one of my friend’s fathers had a boat. I just had to find a way to Boston because they had moved there after the accident. Believe me, I tried everything to find them. I tried calling their family members, even the cops, but nothing worked.
I knew they were in Boston; I just didn’t know where exactly. But I would find them. Once I did, I could start figuring out what really happened to my friends. Maybe I could even get Becky to help me. She might be too broken, though.
I tried calling Becky to see if she had any clue where the family was. When she answered, I said, “Where are they? Please, if you know, tell me. I need to know what caused that wave.”
“I don’t know where they are,” she said. “Stop doing this to me. You're bringing back so many sad memories. My heart can’t take it, Katie. Please stop.”
I didn’t want to keep hurting Becky, so I stopped. I went to look for them alone.
A few months passed, and I finally found them. But when I asked for the boat, they told me they had sold it to get the money to move.
What was I supposed to do now? That boat had been my only way to find out what caused that wave.
