Chapter 1
Kirk’s P.O.V
I never would have thought that being one of the guards in Alpha Star and Alpha National’s pack would be fun, but it was. The wind flowing through my fur as I ran, feeling the life leave my prey as I snapped their pathetic necks, the thrill of the hunt and fight and I even enjoyed the feeling of the cold morning dew coating my silver fur every morning. I wouldn’t change a single thing about being a guard because I loved it way too much. My shift was almost over and I knew I had to hurry back to the pack house, to report what had happened on my shift to both Alpha Star and Alpha National. I ran all the way back to the edge of the trees, shifting into my human form and putting my uniform back on. I had been gone for several months this time, but those are our shifts and once the shift changes it's your choice how long you want to stay on it. For me I love hunting down rogues and snapping their necks, so I stay out here for as long as I can, guarding the territory. After all, what right do they have to come through our territory and cause trouble? I never had to worry about anyone else because I didn’t have a mate, so there was no need for me to come back early, but that might change. Tomorrow is my eighteenth birthday and that’s when a wolf finally meets their mate, so we’ll see if I find mine, but I truly doubt it. I’m not looking for a mate and I’m not going to make it my top priority or avoid it either, if it happens then it happens and if it doesn’t then it doesn’t, but either way it won’t change me. I have heard other mated wolves talk about how their mate has affected them and how it has changed them, but they all seem to say the same thing, that the mate bond is very strong and once you have met your mate you can’t live a day without them. I made my way back to the pack house and Alpha National was standing out front, waiting for me.
“Welcome back, Kirk, I’m glad you’re okay. Did you find any rogues on your adventure?” Alpha National asked, making me chuckle and smirk.
“If you mean adventure as in working then I found plenty, but they won’t be looking at daylight or nightfall ever again.” I replied and Alpha National nodded.
“Well, you have missed a lot since you have been away, as well as a few new members to the pack, but you will meet them soon enough.” Alpha National said and I nodded. I wonder who the newcomers are and what roles they will take on in the pack. Will we get more guards out there?
“Okay, sounds good, I’m sure I’ll meet them eventually, but for now I just want to relax a little.” I replied, just wanting a shower and my bed.
“Hey, where’s the little rugrat? He normally comes out with you if he knows I’m on my way back.” I asked, making National laugh. National and Star’s son was so full of life, he was bubbly and always wanted to wrestle with me, which made me laugh. He was the spitting image of National, but he had Star’s eyes and temper.
“Star’s brother Luke and his mate Sonya took Billy on holiday with them. They said that they wanted to spend as much time with him as possible and learn how to take care of a child before Sonya gives birth to theirs. It made me laugh when they practically kidnapped him from us, telling us they would bring him back when they had learned everything there was to know and not to worry.” National replied and I nodded.
“He really is a bundle of joy, but he’s strong and will cause Luke to stay on his toes.” I said, making him laugh and shake his head.
“Kirk, I know it's your birthday tomorrow, so are you ready to possibly find your mate? Maybe that will settle you down some and you wont stay away as long as what you normally do.” Alpha National said, making me laugh.
“I’m as settled as I’m ever going to be and if I find my mate then she will just have to understand that I love my job and I’ll be gone for weeks, sometimes even months.” I replied, but he just stood there and shook his head at me. The way he looked was like he knew something I didn’t and that made me curious.
“Well, we’ll see what changes and what doesn't when you find her. The mate bond is strong and it’s not something that can be avoided.” National said, laughing and patting me on the back.
“Alright, come on, you gotta be hungry and you probably want a long shower, I know you definitely need one. Your room is just how you left it and as always ready for you, so go on in.” National said, waving his hand in front of his face. I knew I stunk a little, but being out in the wild for several months will do that to a guy, especially when there aren’t any showers or soap out there.
