Chapter 10 “She’s asking for trouble,” Steven Gentry said. “Bringing that girl back here.” Steven was a logger by trade but unemployed for the summer. He usually spent his off season cutting up in the bars of Orofino, or poaching game from his cabin in the woods above Dwarshak Reservoir. Danny was convinced the only reason he volunteered to cover the Thursday and Friday day shifts was because he liked the imagined power of being Deputy Steven Gentry. No matter that it didn’t pay, or that Danny hadn’t issued him a uniform or gun. Steven had brought his own gun, and Danny wouldn’t be surprised if he showed up wearing a Cracker-Jack box badge one morning.
