Chapter 8 Some time later the phone rang. Danny rose far enough from sleep to hear it, but not to care. It rang incessantly, on and on, weaving its metallic warble into his dreams. Then it stopped, and a static filled voice shouted him awake. Danny’s eyes slammed open, stared at the ceiling, his heart hammered, he was sweating. He groped for the two-way on his nightstand and lifted it from the charger, pressing the talk button. “God damn it, what now,” he shouted, and immediately regretted it. “Sorry,” Everett barked through the two-way, “but we’ve got another situation here. Gina Fox, Gavin’s daughter, is missing.” “s**t,” Danny said, then yawned. “I’ll be right down.” “No,” Everett said. “No need for that. I just need to know if you’ve seen her around.” Danny lay back down
