To make matters worse, she's engaged to be married to a man who does not love her, and might in fact be in love with someone else.

The Promotion
As Sarah Hale sat in her father's office, her eyes wandered across the room, as though it wasn’t already a familiar sight. The accolades and picture frames that adorned the walls, the meticulously placed tablepieces, she had seen it all before. Her fingers rapped nervously on the wooden armrest of the leather chair. The room smelled of aged mahogany and expensive cigars, a familiar scent that usually comforted her, but today it felt oppressive. Her father, Gregory Hale, gazed upon her with an inscrutable expression, his sharp eyes studying her as he considered his choice of words. He was about to break some big news. "You've worked really hard, Sarah," he finally said, his husky voice breaking the silence. "It’s time for you to take on more responsibility in the company." Sarah's heart skipped a beat. She could feel the chill running down her spine. She had been working towards this moment for years, striving ceaselessly to prove herself in a company where her last name often worked against her. The whispers of nepotism had followed her since the day she joined Hale Enterprises, and she knew this promotion would only intensify the scrutiny. "As you know, we’ve been considering a number of candidates to take over the recently vacated role of Vice President of Operations," Greg continued, his tone revealing nothing of the personal connection they shared. "The board of directors took a vote yesterday, and the majority decided that it should be yours. It's a demanding role, but I believe you're ready for it." Sarah nodded, trying to hide the mix of excitement and anxiety churning in her stomach. "Thank you, Dad – I mean, Mr. Hale. I won't let you down." Her father's expression softened slightly, but only for a moment. "I know you won't; but remember, this is a big step. The board will be watching you closely. Some people are clearly not as convinced as I am." Sarah swallowed hard, understanding the weight of his words. This wasn't just a promotion; it was a test. She would have to prove herself not just to the board, but to the entire company. The stakes just got higher than ever before. As she left her father's office, the reality of her new role began to sink in. She was about to step into a minefield of expectations and doubts, and she wasn't sure how many allies she had in the building. She had always been an easy-going and friendly with everyone around her, but most people couldn’t help but feel she did not deserve her exponential rise to the upper echelons of the hierarchy. The next morning, Sarah arrived at the office a little earlier than usual, determined to hit the ground running. She strode through the bustling lobby, ignoring the curious glances and whispered conversations that followed in her wake. An official announcement had not yet been made, but the rumour mill had gone into overdrive over the past twenty-four hours. Reaching the executive suite, she paused outside the double doors, taking a deep breath before pushing them open. The board members were already assembled, their faces a mix of polite smiles and scarcely concealed skepticism. Sarah conjured a confident smile as she took her seat at the head of the table, her gaze sweeping across the room. "Thank you all for being here," she began, her voice steady despite the butterflies in her stomach. "As you know, I've been promoted to Vice President of Operations. I'm honoured by the trust you have placed in me, and I'm eager to work with all of you to drive Hale Enterprises forward." The room remained silent for a moment, the tension palpable. Finally, an older man with a greying moustache cleared his throat. "We're certainly pleased to have you on board, Sarah, we’re pleased with the work you’ve done over the past few years" he said, his tone polite but guarded. "However, I think I speak for the entire board when I say we have some lingering concerns about the... optics of this promotion." Sarah felt her cheeks flush, but she refused to let her composure slip. "I understand your concerns, Mr. Wilkins. I can assure you that I've worked hard to earn this position, and I'm committed to doing whatever is necessary to prove my worth to this company." Another board member, the sharp-eyed Bethany Wright, leaned forward. "That may be true, but the fact remains that you're the CEO’s daughter. How can we be sure you won't simply coast on your family name?" The accusations stung, but Sarah refused to let them see her hurt. "I'm well aware of the challenges I face, Ms. Wright. But I can promise you that I will work tirelessly to exceed your expectations. Hale Enterprises is my family's legacy, and I have no intention of squandering it." The discussion continued, with the board members probing Sarah's qualifications and challenging her vision for the company. She held her ground, responding with a calm confidence that belied the turmoil churning within her. By the time the meeting adjourned, she felt drained, but also oddly empowered. She had begun to understand the gravity of what she signed up for. As she made her way back to her office, Sarah caught sight of a familiar face in the hallway - her close friend and confidant, Alice Thompson. "Well, well, well, if it isn't the new VP," Alice said with a grin, falling into step beside her. "Looks like you survived the gauntlet." Sarah couldn't help but smile, grateful for the friendly face. "It was... intense, to say the least. But I held my own. At least I think so," she replied with a note of uncertainty in her tone. Alice nodded, her expression turning more serious. "I'm glad to hear it. You know the board is going to be watching your every move, right? They're not going to make this easy for you." "I'm aware," Sarah sighed, running a hand through her lustrous brown hair. "But I'm ready for the challenge. I have to be, if I'm going to prove myself." "Well, you know you've got at least one ally in your corner," Alice said, giving her a reassuring squeeze on the arm. "If you need anything, just let me know." Sarah felt a surge of relief, grateful for Alice's unwavering support. As they parted ways, she couldn't help but wonder how many other allies she might be able to count on in the days and weeks to come. Later that evening, Sarah met her fiancé, Daniel Cunningham, for dinner at an upscale restaurant. She had been making a deliberate effort for a number of weeks, since their engagement, to build a substantial connection with him. It had evidently been more of a business arrangement than a love affair thus far; Daniel being the heir apparent to a manufacturing conglomerate which Sarah’s father was keen on merging with his company. As they were seated, Sarah couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement to share her news with him. "Daniel, you'll never guess what happened today," she began, a smile playing on her lips. "I was promoted to Vice President of Operations at Hale Enterprises." Daniel's expression remained neutral, and he took a sip of his wine before responding. "Is that so? Congratulations, I suppose." Sarah's smile faltered slightly at his lacklustre reaction. "I know it's a big step, and the board has some concerns, but I'm determined to prove myself. This is a chance for me to really make my mark on the company." Daniel nodded, his gaze drifting around the restaurant. "Well, I'm sure your father's name will open a lot of doors for you. You've always had an advantage that others don't." Sarah felt a pang of frustration at his dismissive tone. "This isn't about my name, Daniel. I've worked hard to get here, and I'm not going to let the board's doubts hold me back." "If you say so," Daniel replied, his attention clearly elsewhere as he had spent more time looking at his phone the entire evening than at Sarah. "Just don't forget that your real responsibility is to our family, not some corporate ladder." Sarah's heart sank as she realized that her fiancé's indifference was more than just a passing mood. All she wanted was some semblance of happiness whilst playing the dutiful daughter. Sitting across from him, however, she couldn't help but wonder if the engagement they had built was as hollow as the validation she sought at work.
