The Obsession Deepens

The city pulsed around them, neon lights flickering against rain-slicked streets. But Lila barely noticed the world beyond Kai Draven—the man standing too close, his storm-gray eyes locked onto her like she was the only thing that mattered. She should have been afraid. But fear wasn’t what made her pulse pound. His words still echoed in her mind. You don’t realize what you are. But they do. Her instincts screamed at her to demand answers, to push him for the truth. But standing in the cold night, her body still thrumming from his touch, she realized something else. The truth wasn’t just dangerous. It was inevitable. “You need to go home,” Kai said, his voice a shade softer now, but no less commanding. Lila swallowed, shaking her head. “No. Not until you tell me what’s happening.” A muscle ticked in his jaw. “You’re not ready.” Her fingers curled into fists. “Then make me ready.” Kai exhaled sharply, dragging a hand through his dark hair. The motion sent droplets of rain falling from his sleeves, but he didn’t seem to notice. Or care. She realized then—he was fighting something. Himself. “Lila—” “Tell me,” she insisted, stepping closer. She wasn’t sure if it was defiance or sheer recklessness that drove her. Maybe both. Kai’s eyes darkened. Something inside him snapped. Before she could react, his hand was on her waist, pulling her against him. Lila barely had time to gasp before his other hand came up, fingers brushing along her jaw, tilting her face just enough so that she had no choice but to meet his gaze. The air between them thickened. Every part of her was screaming at her to run—but she couldn’t. Didn’t want to. His thumb ghosted over her lips, slow and deliberate. “You think you want answers,” he murmured, his voice dangerously smooth. “But what if the truth is worse than the lies?” Lila’s breath hitched. And then—the world blurred. For a split second, everything around them faded, like the city had been swallowed by shadows. The streetlights flickered out, the distant hum of traffic vanished. All that remained was Kai. And the feeling of falling— No, not falling. Being pulled. The air warped, reality twisting around them like the moment before a dream turns into a nightmare. Then, as suddenly as it happened—it was gone. Lila stumbled back, gasping. The street was normal again. The lights were back. The sounds of the city rushed in all at once. But she knew. Something had shifted. Her pulse pounded, her mind spinning. “What… what the hell was that?” Kai’s expression was unreadable. “The beginning.” “The beginning of what?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he reached out again—this time, slower. More deliberate. His fingers brushed over her wrist, over the same place she had felt the strange marking burn into her skin the night before. Lila sucked in a breath as a shock of heat surged through her, curling through her veins like fire. Kai’s lips parted slightly, as if he had felt it too. “Lila…” His voice was almost a warning. But it was too late. Because the second his touch deepened, the world tilted again— And this time, she saw it. Flashes of something ancient. A woman with her face—but not her. A man who looked like Kai—but his eyes were darker, his presence even more suffocating. A house, burning in the distance. A kiss that felt like a promise and a curse all at once. And a voice—her voice—whispering words she didn’t understand. Then, just as suddenly—the visions were gone. Lila staggered, breathing hard. What was that? Kai’s grip on her tightened—just for a second—before he forced himself to let go. She caught the flicker of emotion in his eyes before he masked it beneath carefully controlled indifference. Lila swallowed hard. “Tell me what’s going on.” Kai’s jaw clenched. “No.” She sucked in a sharp breath. “No?” His gaze pinned her in place. “Not yet.” Anger flared through her. What the hell was his problem? But before she could say another word, a sharp sound cut through the night. A whisper—no, a hiss. Lila froze. Kai did too. Then, before she could react, he moved. One second she was standing there, and the next—Kai was in front of her, his back to the alley behind them. Protecting her. She barely had time to process it before she felt it. Something was watching them. No. Not something. Someone. A figure stepped forward from the shadows, slow and calculated. Dressed in black. Face obscured. But even through the darkness, Lila could see his eyes. Completely black. A chill slithered down her spine. Kai’s stance shifted, shoulders tensing. “You shouldn’t be here.” The man tilted his head, his lips curving into something that wasn’t a smile. “You know the rules, Draven,” the man murmured. His voice was wrong—like it belonged to something that didn’t belong in this world. Kai didn’t move. “She’s not part of this.” The man’s gaze flickered to her, and the second he did, something inside Lila tightened. She had felt this before—in her dreams. The stranger’s grin widened. “We both know that’s a lie.” Lila’s pulse roared in her ears. What the hell was happening? Before she could move, before she could even breathe, Kai’s hand shot out—gripping her wrist and pulling her behind him. “Run,” he ordered. Lila hesitated. “Kai—” “Run, Lila.” His voice was steel. Undeniable. And for the first time since she met him—she listened. She turned, heart racing, and ran.
