There was a pack dinner arranged at the Alpha’s house today. I had managed to leave the letter to the Vampire King at the castle and make it back to the dinner just in time for no one to notice that I went anywhere. Of course Lydia knew, but she promised not to tell anyone else, even the other girls, until I was ready to tell them. Lydia has always been a good friend to me and understood my boundaries. I did want to tell the other girls but I was worried about Paloma. I knew I could just tell the others and not her, but she had also gotten to know so much about me it seemed hard to keep things from her.
Speaking of Paloma, the Alpha happened to seat her right across from me. Whenever the Alpha had pack dinners it was just to help build the strength of the pack as one unit, which is why he invited everyone, including regular Omega’s like myself. They liked to have all the unmated people sit together so I did have Lydia to my left but whenever I looked forward I met eyes with Paloma. I expected her to look mad at me. Part of me was even scared she would say it out loud to the pack about me having a vampire as a mate, but instead she looked at me softly. Almost like she pitied me.
One thing about Paloma is that she was actually extremely effortlessly gorgeous. She had dark medium skin, light brown hair, and deep green eyes that always had a gentleness to them. There were plenty of unmated wolves that wished Paloma would be their mate, but none were lucky so far. Paloma was not one to date before finding a mate either like other wolves were. She believed she would wait for her soulmate, her mate. Maybe that was why she pitied me. Maybe she imagined what she would do if it was her, and she had waited all this time. Still, I hated having to look up at her eyes, and know that I was hiding my letter to my mate from her.
There was a sound of clanking metal, and I turned my attention to the front of the room. There standing in front of the only horizontal table in the large dinning hall, was the Alpha of our pack. Jason. He was smiling with his bright, perfectly white teeth. He was by all standards, very handsome. His dark brown, almost black hair, was slicked back today, and he had on nice slacks and a white shirt. He dressed for the occasion. The one clanking the fork to the glass was his Beta Richard, Yvettes husband and mate. Once he noticed that everyone was looking at the Alpha he stopped.
Alpha Jason looked around the room still smiling and then began to talk in a booming voice that was heard all over the room loud and clear, “Good evening everyone. What an honor it is again to have you all here for our monthly pack dinner.”
He looked over to a table where a she wolf named Gemma was sitting holding her sleeping newborn pup in her arms. “Of course it’s also an honor to welcome back Gemma, as well as her and Oliver’s daughter Rachel. Let’s give them a round of applause.”
The room erupted in applause and cheers for the new parents.
That was also something that made Alpha Jason a good Alpha. He always kept up with names, and the lives of his pack. It made all of us respect him more. Once the noise quieted down, the Alpha continued. “Now, I do have a big announcement to make. I have done my time reflecting with the Moon Goddess, and I have come to the conclusion that while second chance mates are not impossible, it seems for me it is not something the Moon Goddess has in store for me. However I will not leave this pack without a Luna. Therefore I will be having a ball where I welcome any unmated wolf who would like to meet me and see if we have a connection, to eventually become our Luna.”
There was chatter all around the room, and eyes were suddenly on the people at my table. All the unmated wolves. The Alpha moved his hand around the room to shush everybody. “Please I know this is a lot to take in, but I believe it is what is best for the pack. I’ll release more information in the coming days, but if you are unmated, and have been for a bit, I implore you to consider this. Now let us all finish eating and we can get back to our homes to enjoy the rest of the weekend.”
The Alpha quieted us down as if he didn’t just drop a huge bomb on us all. Alpha Jason had his mate once. Our Luna Brenda, was a beautiful wolf and woman that looked perfect next to Alpha Jason. They both adored each other, and had the kind of love everyone wished they could have for themselves. Luna Brenda was highly respected and she was just like Alpha Jason, where she cared about her pack and their lives. When she was discovered to be carrying twin pups the entire pack was ecstatic. We all eagerly awaited the arrival of the little ones.
Sadly on the day Luna Brenda gave birth there were complications. Her umbilical cord was wrapped around one of the little ones' necks, and her blood pressure kept dropping. Even with her Luna blood there was nothing any of the doctors could do to save her. They were able to unwrap the umbilical cord and save the two pups, but Luna Brenda passed that day.
Everyone always gave props to Alpha Jason for how he was able to still lead the back and care for the pups even in his grief. He was without a Luna for 2 years already and I guess he realized he needed to find a Luna for the pack.
I didn’t expect her to talk to me but Paloma leaned toward me and said low enough for just me to hear, “Maybe since you can’t be Vampire Queen, you should consider being Luna. I truly think you’d be good at it.”
I knew she wasn’t being patronizing. I knew she meant it. She wanted me to try out to be Luna. She believed this was a perfect alternative to my mate being a vampire. She also believed I could do it. I knew she was also just trying to rationalize my mate being a vampire king. But what if she was right. If he doesn’t show up to Stella’s tomorrow, what is the next thing I have to do, is become Luna?
It was a crazy thought and I wasn't sure it would even be possible to catch Alpha Jason's eye. But what if I told him the truth about who my mate was, and he realized that it was impossible for me to do anything about it, and then for some reason he just decided that I would be perfect for Luna. I didn't really want the role of Luna. It did seem like an insane amount of pressure and work, but I was also scared about needing a second chance mate. I had no way of knowing what the Vampire King was thinking right now or if he would be there. But would trying to win Alpha Jason's heart really be a bad second choice? I looked up at the table where the Alpha was sitting and as I was staring, taking in his features, he made eye contact with me. Light brown eyes welcoming and nice, he smiled at me with his perfect smile, and for a split second I thought that if the Vampire King could really never love me, then I think I knew what I had to do.
