Blake
I sat at the head of the table as the head of the dining room table. Eveline was seated to my left, and her son, my stepson, Rian, was to my right. Eveline did have another son, Tay, who was betrothed to the vampire queen of another coven three states away. I knew it was hard for Eveline when she sent him away, but getting to know that he was going to be king of his own coven was enough to make her satisfied. He even sends her lavish gifts every now and then that she adores. Of course he never sends anything to me, he does send things to Rian as well, but I know he still doesn’t quite like me. As always, I don’t blame him. I would feel the same if I was in the same boat as him.
We all sat in silence, as we waited. We weren’t using the dining room for eating, after all we don’t actually eat, but instead we were having a meeting to discuss current affairs. I didn’t think there would be much to say to begin with, but then Wesley walked in. Wesley was one of the few people that I trusted the most. He was my right hand man, but really I considered him my best friend.
He had a letter in his hand. He walked up to me and handed it to me while saying, “It seems the mutt is still interested.”
Hearing the word mutt Eveline turned her head to us and glared at the letter in my hands. She was quiet as I read the front
It was addressed to “The Vampire King” from “Andrea.” I wasn’t sure if I should rip up the letter right there and never know what she said, but part of me was curious what she had to say that made her so persistent.
I ripped open the envelope and pulled out the letter. It was written in neat handwriting.
“Dear Vampire King
I realized I didn’t exactly get your name. I know you don’t want to hear from me, but I wanted to try and reach out to let you know that I still want to see you. I know you don’t believe me, but the Moon Goddess believes you are my soulmate. I want to at least try and figure out why she believes that. I’m going to go into the human town tomorrow night at 8pm. I’ll be at the coffee shop called “Stellas”
I hope you know even if you don’t show up I’ll keep trying, but I do hope you show up.
From Andrea
P.S All my friends and family call me Andy so you can call me Andy too.”
I can see Eveline from the corner of my eyes still staring at me, waiting to see what I’ll say. She’s quiet though, as I tear up the letter into tiny pieces. I see a small smirk appear on her face, as she says, “So I’m guessing it was just nonsense. Nothing important.”
I nod. “Nothing important.”
I drop the pieces of paper to the floor knowing the servants will pick them up after the meeting. We continue the meeting. There isn’t much to discuss. After the meeting I go and look for Wesley. He’s in the servants quarters talking to one of my maids. I can see he was obviously flirting with her because she’s laughing and twirling her hair.
She sees me approaching and her eyes widen, and she nods for Wesley to turn around. He does, and acknowledges me. “My Lord. What can I do for you?”
I stare at the maid and she understands my gesture. She takes off to the other room to leave us alone. “Have you ever heard of a place called Stellas?” I ask.
I know Wesley has gone out into the human town at night much more frequently than I have. So, if anyone were to know about it, it would be him. He raises an eyebrow and asks, “Why do you want to know about a human cafe?”
“Because I want to. Now what do you know about it? Is it busy?” I persist.
He shakes his head. “Sort of. It’s busy, but quiet. A lot of college students go to study there, so it’s not really a place where people notice you if that’s what you want to know. Are you planning on taking a trip there?”
“Maybe. I don’t know. I’m thinking about it.”
“What made you think about it?”
I know Wesley is not one to spread rumors or drama. He certainly wouldn’t tell Eveline. If I tell him something he’ll keep it to himself. So I sigh and say, “In the letter the mutt wants me to meet her there at 8 tomorrow. She said if I didn’t go she’d keep trying. I’m thinking of going just to get this fantasy out of her head.”
Wesley nods, “Well if you want me to go with you, or at least to help get there let me know.”
“Thank you. I’ll let you know tomorrow. I’m still thinking about it all.” I say, as I turn to leave. I’m thinking about it all over and over in my head. Is it really worth going? Will Andrea actually listen to me if I tell her she needs to let go of the idea of us? Or is it all just worthless? I don’t even know why I’m truly thinking about going, but part of me is curious.
Yes, I think she’s insane to even believe that we’re soulmates, or whatever the mutts believe. But it is interesting to think she even feels it for me. We’ve never even met before yesterday, so how could she be so certain?
It would probably be better in the long run to just go and talk with her to get it over with. That way I can at least say that I tried to get her to understand. I think I’m going. The first thing I think of though, is that I can’t let Eveline find out.
I decided to go up to her bedroom to talk to her about it already, to think of some excuse.
I knock on the door when I get there and she opens it up. She’s already in her light red nightgown. She smiles at me as she says, “I didn’t expect you tonight.”
“I’m just here to talk.” I explain.
She opens the door for me to walk in, “Then let's talk.”
I walk in and once she closes the door I begin to talk, “I’m going to the human town with Wesley tomorrow.”
The instant I say that she had a frown on her face. She wasn’t even trying to hide her annoyance. “Whatever for?”
“I heard the maids talking about some humans who are getting more interested in vampires, and I just want to go down there myself to see if I can hear anything. If it’s true we need to find a way to shut it all down. I need you to look after the castle for me while I’m gone. Make sure no one gets up to trouble.”
The frown leaves her face and she’s calmer. Making her believe I need her is usually a great way for me to put her in a good mood. She takes a step closer to me and puts her hands on my chest, “Yes, I can do that for you. You just promise to be careful out there. I’ll kill Wesley if something happens to you.”
Sometimes she says things to me that make me wonder if she actually loves me. I pushed the thought away, and just said, “I’ll be careful.”
She smiles and hugs me, I’m glad she doesn’t question me anymore. It’s settled then, I was going to meet up with Andrea.
