Chapter Eight Andy
I didn’t expect him to immediately agree and ask me a question. I expected him to push back and then, eventually, maybe, hopefully, he would give in. Instead, he asked what I did for fun.
When I first saw him in the castle, I wondered if it was just the activation of the mate bond that made me attracted to him, but seeing him now, I knew that wasn't true. He was effortlessly good-looking, something our waitress was obviously aware of. He was in casual clothing and pulled it off so nicely. I could tell he put on contacts to come to the human town, because his red eyes were now dark brown, and for some reason I found myself missing his haunting red eyes. I wondered what they looked like with moonlight instead of dim candles.
I tried not to show my shock and instead calmly answered. “Well, I actually work down at the pack library. It’s quiet, but I do love getting to read books while I’m there. Not counting work, I actually like baking. I love reading recipe books in the library specifically, and then trying them out at home. It’s really fun. I like movies too. Star Wars movies are actually my favorite. Of course, I like going for a run. It’s always really fun to just let out all my stress.
What about you? What do you do for fun?”
He shrugged, and his eyes drifted around the café as he answered. I wondered why he wouldn’t look me in the eyes, but I still listened to him. “I don’t really like baking. Taste isn’t really something vampires can do. For my job, it’s really being the Vampire King. It takes up most of my time, so I don’t necessarily have time for fun. I would say I like walking as well, but truthfully my coven is what has my attention.”
There was a silence as his eyes finally made his way back to me. “What else do we ask? I don’t usually “get to know” people.”
I appreciated him trying, but I wondered what kind of social skills he had had as a vampire. Did he really not know how to communicate during small talk, or did he just not want to talk to me? “Well, for starters, I don’t actually know your name.”
He raised an eyebrow, “Really? Your pack Alpha doesn’t know my name?”
“He might, but I’m just an Omega. I don’t really talk with the Alpha at all for him to tell me things about the vampire coven nearby. "That’s his business.” I explained.
He had a lazy smile on his face as he said, “Guess then. What do you think my name is?”
“You don’t want to tell me?”
“You don’t want to play a game, Andrea? "It’ll be fun, and help the day pass” He said. I heard him say my name for the first time. The way I had wanted him to the first time I met him, and my heart skipped a few beats. He didn’t say it with anger like the last time, instead it was soft and curious.
I could feel my cheeks flush, and by the way his smile brightened slightly, I knew he could see. “Okay, I’ll guess. Um, Anthony?”
He shook his head.
“Preston?”
He laughed. It was the first time I heard him laugh and for a second I wondered how else I could get him to laugh so I could keep hearing it. “You think my name would be Preston? That’s like a preppy wolf name for your Alpha.”
I let out a small laugh, “Okay, okay. Let me think of a Vampire name then. Um. How about Edward.”
He stared at me and I could see him trying to stop another laugh as he asked, “Like Edward from Twilight?”
I shrugged, “Maybe. I don’t know. I’ve never spoken to a vampire. I don’t know your guy’s names.”
He let out a content sigh and said, “Yes I can tell that very much. Specifically how you barged into my castle without an invitation.”
“Which I apologized about.” I pointed out.
He waved me off with his hand, which slightly annoyed me, but it also seemed like the kind of thing someone with royal status would do. He looked back at me and said, “Blake. My name is Blake.”
I don’t think I would’ve guessed that name. Getting to put a name to his face though was nice and comforting. He didn’t seem so scary anymore. Instead he seemed like a person. Well vampire. But still, he seemed like someone I could talk to everyday.
“Blake. That’s a nice name. It’s nice to talk to you too on this level. Without feeling like we’re so different.” Once I said that his attitude changed.
He seemed to get more stoic as he spoke, “But we are still. A vampire would never think to even approach me the way you did. Especially when I’m already spoken for.”
I felt my heart drop. What did he mean by that? Did he have a girlfriend already? I never knew about the Vampire King being with anyone. I myself knew there used to be a Vampire Queen that the old king had, but I didn’t know Blake had anyone. “I didn’t know you had a…” I trailed off to let him finish the sentence.
He caught on to what I was doing and said the worst word I wanted to hear. “Wife.”
He was married. Oh my goddess he was married. He had a wife and I had barged into their home, claiming I was his soulmate. She probably hates my guts. I would hate my guts.
“I’m sorry I didn’t know. You can tell her I apologize for any stress I caused her.” I said.
Blake shrugged which was also not the reaction I expected. “I won’t tell her that. She doesn’t know I’m here right now. She’d cause such a scene if she did.”
He didn’t tell her about our meeting? Why would he keep a secret like that from his wife? To me, to keep something like that must mean he didn’t really care for her. I decided to be blunt, “Why didn’t you tell her? Shouldn’t you tell your wife everything?”
His eyebrow was raised again, and he paused. I think he was contemplating telling me anything. Finally his face rested, and he started to tell me, “It was an arranged marriage Andrea. Of course if I actually loved her, I would tell her. I wouldn’t dare think about hiding a meeting with another girl from her if that was the case. But she was the old Vampire Queen, and had the coven’s respect. I had to keep her around.”
Without warning, simply from the joy of hearing his response I said aloud, “So, I still have a chance?”
He tilted his head, “A chance? You still really want to try and get me to believe we’re good for each other?”
I nodded. Of course I did. I had to prove to him the Moon Goddess chose him for me for a reason. “Yes, I do. I still need to talk to you more.”
He laughed again, making me swoon again as well to his dark bellowing laugh. “Fine, from the top.” he began. Leaning in closer to me, in practically a whisper. “Make me believe we’re perfect for each other.” He was so close to me I could feel his breath hitting my lips. I didn’t know if how close he was was affecting him, but it sure was for me. I couldn’t think straight. Godess why did you have to give me the best looking vampire possible! I wanted to test the attraction right then and there. Prove it to him in the quickest way possible. I wanted to kiss my mate
