Much to everyone’s frustration, Declan was charged with a misdemeanor since he had no prior criminal record and there was no proof that this had been a prolonged case. He had been careful to never break bones or leave lasting marks, so all the court had to go off was the record the police made when they arrested Declan and a testimony from the Pride Riders. He spent a few nights in jail while awaiting his trial, then he paid a fine of one thousand dollars and was sentenced to complete a Certified Batterer Intervention Program. There was a court order for him to seek therapy and take his medication as well, but everyone agreed Declan shouldn’t need to be obligated by law to take care of his mental health, not when it would have been so easy for him to take his pills from the beginning.
