Mr.Murthy is an Indian information technology industrialist, and the founder of Infosys, one of the largest multinational corporations providing business consulting, technology, engineering and outsourcing services. Mr. Murthy has been listed amoung the 12 greatest enterpreneurs of our time by Fortune magazine, and has been described as father of the Indian IT sector by time magazine.Mr.Myrthy conceptualized, articulated and implemented the global delivery model which has become the backbone of the Indian software industry. His father inspired him about Nehru building steel plants, huge dams, atomic energy establishment, educational institutions of higher learning etc. and about wonderful things happening in India at that point in time in preparing India to be part of modern world. Respect to elders was part of his household by introspecting on words of elders and asking ourselves about what that person meant by that purticular advice, how it will benefit me,and what is the need that we need to do from now on which were some of things that manifested as respect. Following his college and IIT,Murthy had four or five jobs in companies along with 12 computer science sudents working on a very old IBM1401 computer now in ma museum. As per a call from his Professor Rajaraman,to talk to Professor Krishnayya ,IIM Ahmedabad ,who had come for recruitment, and was to install the first time sharing system in the country Mr.Murthy spoke to him and he stunned Murthy on exposing how that time sharing system would be a leapfrog for him in terms of his knowledge of computer science. Since the salary offered was half his professor told him that he will get an opportunity to study how the time sharing system works and about its various components and develope interpreters and simulators. As adviced by his father he did exactly what his teacher told. Mr.Murthy and his co-students, IIT Kanpur, were influenced by the advancement taking place in US. They understood American culture from professors from MIT,Princeton,University of Pennsylvania,University of Michigan, and University of Berkeley, assossiated with IIT Kanpur. At that time they saw Berkeley revolution, the student revelution in Paris. Also at that time Soviet Union was a Government friend, and build 2 steel plants in India. US was also a friend from person to person level as there were wonderful professors from 8 universities. At that time nation had a feeling of nationalism, self reliance, and anti-imperialism. At the time he left IIT Kanpur Pakistan war took place.Soviet Union helped again, along with Independence movement leaders that influenced his personality. When Murthy joined IIM Ahmedabad,he was the chief system programmer, and head of computer center. He got opprtunity to install that time sharing system based on HP2116B computer. It had 16 teletypewriters and ran in BASIC.They had the sourcecode of the time sharing system. They learned about working of scheduler, interrupt drivers, modification of operating system to suit needs and build a simulator for indian computer TDC-312 running on top of operating system .Also they build a BASIC interpreter running on simulator. TDC-312 was indian made mini computer ,12 bit, modelled after PDP-8. After his Bulgaria visit,he was tranformed from a leftist to a determined compassionate capitalist and decided to become an enterpreneur in India. He wanted capitalism to be popular amoung the poor sections of the society. Restraining the rich from grabbing more power, that will flourish capitalism in the society. Murthy believes that capitalism is important for economic progress of the country.Embracing enterpreneurship creates more jobs, under capitalism that is atool to abolish poverty in the country.Capitalism encourages enterpreneurship the best.It converts power of an idea into wealth for themselves and jobs for others. After returning from France,Murthy joined Thinktank in Pune called Systems Research Institute started by professor Krishnayya which was modelled after Stanford Research Institute. It used operations research systems theory and mathematical modelling to address problems of large-scale public systems. Murthy left Systems Research Institute created a company called Softronics developing application software for Indian corporations, despite non availbility of computers like IBM1401,ICL,and shortage of only available ECIL COMPUTERS. He joined Patni computers as general manager of software representing Data General Computers in India. They started a business to export software to United satates. He developed and worked with a group of 100 youngsters. Before starting Infosys he sold Data General computers in India, exported softwares on digital computers, and developed application softwares for local customers. Also they upgraded CAMP package to run on a larger computer like Data General MV/8000 and rehosted it with additional functionality on an IBM 4341. They specialised in software developement. Infosys took off after 6 youngsters left jobs and worked with him even with no money and as Luckily they got an advance from a client. Murthy wanted Infosys to be the first indian company of the professional, for the professional and by the professional. Infosys was highly professional, adhered to the highest level of transperancy, fairness and accountability, followed the finest principles of corporate governance from the beginning till he left. According to Murthy,Nehru laid foundation for modern India by building a strong foundation for primary and higher education. He started IITs some management and other institutes of higher learning. He put zero import duties on books and periodicals. He released foreign exchange for students to go out and study abroad, as higher education was important for emancipation of the country. And building dams, electrical power plants, manufacturing plants,by engineers, doctors, physicists, chemists played an important role. Nehru believed in central planning, socialism,Soviet influenced model of developement. As was Murthy influenced by Nehru’s idea of socialism, planning. According to Murthy to eradicale poverty, redestribution ofexisting wealth as neccessary. So socialism should be practiced in India to create more wealth. When Murthy started Infosys they had only 250 US dollars hopefull an enthusiastic. His dream was to create a company that was highly respected, created jobs for people of the country, that stuck to a value system, that demonstrated power of corporate governance, that gained educated talent inthe country, that benchmarked the best in the world, focused on exports. Infosys beliewed in competing in most competitive markets in the world. As they had experience of studying or working abroad. They wanted to experience all good technlogical things like inventions, developments, global competition. According to Murthy,India has large number of educated proffessionals, english speaking, and combining US and Indian workhours 24 hour productive days can be achieved.Globalisation is cost-effective,selling is profitable, souscing captal is easy, and global, with countries partnering in trade, suvival and success is eminent. According to Murthy there are 4 to 5 million science and engineering university graduates yearly, mostly middle class, hard working, having value of money for emloyers, honest, and can create large export surplus that will create a better India, creating more opportunities. According to Murthy, government should create an environment for business to have enough incentives to create more jobs. Liberalization reduced friction to business or enhanced its velocity. As a result government abolished office of control of capital issues. And equity became a viable financial option. Now it is easy to promote abroad sales put there sales offices. Also there is now 100% equity for foriegn companies in high tech areas. This brought many multinationals to India. This prompted Indian companiesto compete in attracting manpower. So aim was to compete with multinationals. So Infosys ensured that emloyees are salary satisfied, have flexible work hours, added recreation facilities, for betterment of the employees. So liberalisation benefitted Infosys also by opening offices abroad. Thus about 98% of Infosys revenue comes from abroad. Infosys has now sevral offices abroad. Infosys focusses on global as well as India talent. Murthy believes tha globalisation is good for a company. Globalisation do not benefit countries tha cant attract global capital. Murthy is a capitalist in mind, socialist at heart. A fair player can oly succeedin the game of corporations. Since now agriculture is low in India hence people from there has to be brought to industrial sector. If rich and poor come together in global trade then, standar of the poor country will rise. Globalisation is good but it should follow all rules. Free trade can benefit poor nations. Country must have something to offer to the world for global trade. Countries must adhere to global free trade principles. If countries stick to free trade, they can beat recession. A compassionate capitalist attitude can eradicate poverty. While travelling to paris,Murthy thought of starting his company and commit to it so that there is no chance or opportunity or time for further discussion on it and to value his commitments.Infosys was set up by him to generate more and more employment in India.Today Infosys is a global leader in next generation of IT and consulting with annual revenues of over 4.8 billion dollars. The company designs and delivers technology enabled business solutions that help global companies. It provides a complete range of services by supplementing domain, industry expertise and calculated alliances with leading IT infrastructure services. The global delivery model proved to be an advantage to Infosys and emerged as an upsetting force amoung technology providers. Its services icludes business and technology consulting, systems integration, product engineering, custom software developement,maintenance,re-engineering,independent testing and other validation industry leading to rise of offshore outsourcing. The main principle was to move work to where a better workforce was available. Infosis had 50 offices and developement centres around the world including countries like Japan,India,CzechReplublic,China Poland and many more.97% of company’s revenue came fron existing customers. It ranked for 1st position and then to 3rd due to malingerer of leader and co-founder. The company commenced with a capital of $250 and signe up with its first client,DataBasicsCorporation ,USA.In 1983 its corporate headquarters was shifted to Bangalore. With 11billion dollars as the matket capitalisation of the company in 2000 which then increades and the company rose to one of the largest exporters of software from India.Under the leadership of Murthy, the company was at top with turnover of Rs.1.16 million in 1981 and increased to 19 billion in 2001. Infosys was the first company to follow GAAP disclosure norms in1999 for listing at NAASDAQ.In 2000 it was a total software services company and a software developement centre was estsblished at Toronto to institute the presence of the company in global markets. He bacame the biggest brand ambassador of the company by talking about it at every opportunity he gotand build a brand name for the company. Mr.Murthy is recepient of several awards like Padmavibhushan,Legion of the honor(France),Media like Time,Economist, and CNN rates him as top amoung company leaders and influential personalities. He has lead key govt. projects in India. His authority training is most sought after and is seen by Indians and the information technology supervisors around the world. This training is usefull for learners, military men, performers, women, corporates and anyone who wants to get big. His dharma was “satyannasti dharma paro” (Truth is highest dharma) and “satyamev jayate” (truth alone truimphs.) Narayana Murthy says to “think big, don’t hesistate to start small.” He would export products where market was readily available as in India market was poor. Thus KSA-infosys was formed as first Indo-American joint venture.Infosys bagged a DMAP for Reeboks french operations. It bagged anothe contract from Digital Equipments in1989. By mid 1990s Infosys faced stiff competition from Tata consultancy services, Wipro, Cambridge technology partners, and Sapinet, and from consultancies like Anderson consulting and Earnst and young. Murthy also created Yantra corp and a joint venture with Satyan computers and DCM. Infosys became the first Indian company to be listed through ADR worth $US 75 million on the NASDAQ.His model was to produce where it was most cost effective and to sell where it was most profitable. That means to produce in India and sell in global markets. According to him to run business smooth, precicability of revenues, sustainability of the predictions, profitability of the revenues, and a good risking model was neccessary. He insisted on taking calculated risks. Murthy took chairman position from 2002 to 2011. He told that despite failures one must move on and learn from failures. His objectives of phase 3 was: 1.Company would provide software services and also transformational projects, IT services and business side of the clients. 2.The company would transform into a business solution provider. 3.It would focus on cloud computing, enterprice mobility and sustainability based on current market needs. 4.Provide learning and business platform solutions. 5.Give financial services and insurance, manufacturing, energy, utilities, communication and services, retail logistics and life science. 6.Infosys Public Service Subsidiary would scout for US govt.public service work. 7.1)Business transformation:consulting, systems integration, enterprice solution. 2)Business operations:application develoement, maintenance, infrastructure management, business innovation products platforms and solutions. After Murthy’s retirement from Infosys, operating margins fell more than 23.55% ,a 200 basis dip in margin which was dangerous.
