Chapter 1
"Hello, is this Tanner? This is your mom speaking. Are you doing okay out there? Are you eating on time?"
"Ma'am, I think you might have the wrong number."
"No, I didn't dial the wrong number. You're Tanner Morgan, right? This is your mother, Laura. We haven't seen each other in five years... Well, this might be the last time we ever talk."
The voice continued, "Your father is about to be killed. Sorry, but I can't save him, and I don't want to live anymore. Promise me you will live well. Don't even think about revenge. The people behind this are too powerful... Oh, Mr. Bennett! I'm sorry. I won't call again. Please don't hit me. It hurts... Arrgh!"
The call abruptly ended.
At the Cabinet in Meriland, Tanner sat high in the commander-in-chief's seat of the Northern Warzone, waiting for the president to officially grant him the rank of General of the Army.
The Cabinet was filled with Meriland's top officials, each one powerful enough to influence the world.
Today, they had all gathered to witness Tanner's moment of glory as he was promoted to General of the Army.
But suddenly, Tanner shot up from his seat, his eyes bloodshot as he bolted out of the room like an arrow released from a bow.
The unexpected move left the room full of dignitaries in stunned silence.
"This is Commander Tanner Morgan's most glorious moment. Even the president is here. What could have happened to make him leave in such a panic?"
"Be quick! All of you!" Tanner ignored the surprised stares of others and jumped into an armed helicopter parked outside the Cabinet building, roaring with fury.
"Track the location of this phone number and get me there as fast as possible! Hurry up!"
"Yes, sir!" Major General Ryder Flynn, who was on standby, quickly pinpointed the location. "Commander, it's in Caridonia!"
But Ryder hesitated. "Commander, today is the day the president is awarding you the rank of General..."
"I don't care! None of that matters anymore!" Tanner bellowed after hearing the answer.
"I don't care if I lose my position as commander-in-chief or if I don't get promoted to General! Get me to Caridonia immediately and find out what's happening with Laura and Gavin Morgan! NOW!"
His urgent voice didn't stop there. "Move! Right now!"
Hearing the familiar name of Caridonia and recalling the names mentioned in Laura's call, Tanner, who had endured life-threatening injuries without so much as a complaint, was now in tears, his entire body trembling uncontrollably.
He was absolutely certain that the woman on the phone just now was his biological mother, Laura Morgan!
"Mom!" Tanner was on the verge of tears.
'I'm sorry!' he exclaimed inwardly. 'I let you down. I am too foolish to recognize your voice. I had no idea you and Dad were still alive, and I didn't even search for you sooner!'
Tanner's eyes were bloodshot, and the hatred buried for five years began to resurface in his mind.
Five years ago, he was the son of Caridonia's richest man, Gavin Morgan. His parents loved each other, and he married Rebecca, known as the most beautiful woman in Caridonia. His life was perfect.
But the good times didn't last. The Morgan family was framed for treason and colluding with foreign enemies by Gavin's trusted aide, Landon, in collusion with the Caridonia government. The seventeen members of the Morgan family were executed in front of Caridonia's citizens, dying with deep grievances and hatred.
Even the Morgan family's innocent servants, Tanner's underage sister, and his newly pregnant wife, thirty-eight people in total, were all executed by Landon.
Tanner and his parents barely escaped, planning to flee by water and return later for revenge. But they were tracked down by assassins led by Landon.
Knowing Tanner was a good swimmer, his parents pushed him into the water in a desperate act of love, sacrificing themselves to buy him time. Shortly after, he heard two gunshots from underwater.
He thought his parents had both been killed.
Later, Tanner left Caridonia and was discovered by the Meriland Army's commander, who saw his potential and brought him into the military.
In just five years, Tanner rose through the ranks based on his military achievements, becoming the commander-in-chief of the Northern Warzone, one of Meriland's five major warzones, leading an army of 350,000 soldiers.
Three months ago, with just one warzone under his command, he defeated an allied force of one million soldiers from ten nations, elevating Meriland to the status of a superpower.
He was hailed worldwide as the greatest general of the modern era.
Because of this unparalleled achievement, Meriland decided to promote Tanner to General of the Army, the highest rank in the military.
But none of this was what Tanner truly wanted.
All he wanted was to return to Caridonia, standing before his parents' graves to pay his respects, and then annihilate all his enemies, wiping out their entire families.
But unexpectedly, God showed mercy.
His parents were still alive, which was truly amazing. He could once again see his parents.
"General, we've found something," Ryder reported, speaking while piloting the helicopter at full speed.
"Gavin Morgan was the richest man in Caridonia five years ago, but now he's living a miserable life. His enemies broke his back, leaving him paralyzed in bed, completely dependent on his wife Laura Morgan, who scavenges for trash to support him."
He continued, "Laura Morgan, once known as the most beautiful woman in Caridonia, has spent years caring for Gavin. Her appearance now looks like that of a woman in her sixties."
"What?" Tanner felt a sharp pain in his chest as he heard this.
His father, once so strong and proud, had his back broken and was left paralyzed, relying on his mother to survive.
His mother, who had always been beautiful, was not even fifty yet but had been worn down to look like she was in her sixties. No wonder her voice had become so hoarse that he hadn't recognized it.
He clenched his fists, wondering how much suffering his parents had endured over these five years.
Ryder continued reading the report.
"A few days ago, Gavin's kidney type was found to match that of Jaxon Scott, the second son of Caridonia's richest family. Jaxon had him abducted and is planning to harvest both of his kidneys for his own use."
He revealed, "Laura, in an attempt to save her husband, went to beg Jaxon and even slapped herself, but she was detained, beaten, and humiliated. Jaxon even hired a photographer to film a nude video of her."
"What? Pfft!" When Tanner heard this, he instantly felt a blazing fire of rage surge through his chest. He spat out a mouthful of blood, which splattered across the helicopter cabin.
His parents were enduring such unimaginable humiliation and were on the brink of death, while he had been in the Cabinet celebrating his promotion to General of the Army.
He had just been shamelessly thinking about how he could see his parents again, but now he found it ironic. Why hadn't he started investigating his parents' situation sooner?
'Dad, Mom, I'm sorry! I let you down!' Tanner cried internally.
"General!" Ryder was alarmed to see Tanner coughing up blood.
"I can call the local military to handle this. You don't need to go yourself. Please take care of yourself!" Ryder assumed Tanner was planning to act out of righteousness.
"Are you trying to stop me?" Tanner's eyes were filled with tears of blood as he shouted.
"Gavin Morgan is my father! Laura Morgan is my mother! I am their son! They're dying, and you're trying to stop me?"
Tanner bellowed, "Jaxon Price, you asked for it! Your father slaughtered my entire family, and now you dare to humiliate my parents. You'd better stop right now, and I might let you have a quick death. Otherwise, I'll make your life a living hell!"
He instructed, "Relay my orders: mobilize a division! No, a corps! No, mobilize the most elite First Army Group of the Northern Warzone! 120,000 soldiers! Deploy them all! Flatten the entire Caridonia!"
He added, "And get this helicopter to go faster! Faster, faster, faster!"
"What? So Gavin and Laura are your parents!" Ryder was utterly stunned and immediately regretted his earlier advice, wishing he could slap himself. What nonsense had he been spouting?
A spoiled rich heir in a small city like Caridonia dared to lay hands on the parents of the commander-in-chief of Meriland's Northern Warzone, who commanded 350,000 soldiers.
It was ridiculous!
If Tanner's parents didn't survive, Ryder couldn't imagine what he would do.
Even launching ten thousand missiles to wipe Caridonia off the map would be considered mercy.
Without hesitation, Ryder pushed the helicopter to its absolute limit, accelerating madly.
Chop! Chop! Chop! Chop! Chop! The helicopter roared as it soared into the sky, tearing through the clouds.
