Like a bolt from the blue, Genevieve's mind went entirely blank.
The other side let out a scoff and hung up, leaving her standing there in a daze.
It took her a long time to snap out of it. When she tried calling back, no one answered.
Genevieve stood out in the snow, dialing the number again and again.
The wind cut into her, whipping until her eyes went red and raw, but the line just rang and rang into nothing.
Something in her chest had cracked wide open, and the cold poured straight into it.
Staring at the falling snow, her thoughts grew muddled. Past and present blurred together—one moment she saw the boy from her youth, and the next, she was back in yesterday.
Yet in the end, the only images that remained clear were those photos of Austin and Summer together.
He was lying to her again...
Genevieve forced her stiff legs to move, only to collapse heavily into the snow.
When she woke up again, she was in a hospital.
The nurse changed her IV bag. "You had a 102-degree fever last night. Your assistant brought you in. You can leave once this IV is finished."
Genevieve closed her eyes. "Thank you."
She grabbed her phone from the nightstand. There were thirty-eight missed calls, but Austin had only replied with a text.
Austin: On a business trip.
Genevieve froze, then noticed that Summer had tagged her in an i********: post.
It was a photo of Austin from behind, wearing an apron in the kitchen. The caption was loud and clear: "On our 740th day together, he finally made me my first meal."
The color instantly drained from Genevieve's face.
She remembered the first time Austin had cooked for her... She had asked him if he had done it often for others because he seemed so practiced.
Austin had told her, "I only cook for my wife."
Tears splattered onto her screen, blurring the display.
Genevieve stared at the i********: post for a long time before calling Austin again.
He picked up quickly, his voice sounding completely normal. "What's wrong?"
"Austin, I miss my grandparents," Genevieve choked out.
Austin was silent for a moment. "I'll go back with you in a few days. I'm on a business trip right now."
Liar...
Genevieve hung up. As the cold air hit her face, her tears felt freezing and salty against her skin.
The nurse came over to check on her. Seeing her state, she asked in surprise, "What's wrong? Are you feeling pain anywhere else?"
Genevieve simply shook her head.
Once the nurse left, she got dressed and prepared to go home.
Walking out of the emergency room, she froze at the corner.
She saw Summer holding Austin's arm in the hallway, waiting for their number to be called. The sign above them read: OB-GYN.
Genevieve could hardly believe her eyes.
In the next second, Austin and Summer spotted her too.
From that distance, Genevieve couldn't read the look in Austin's eyes.
She could only see the smug, triumphant grin on Summer's face.
Summer provocatively patted her stomach, and her words "I won't lose" flashed through Genevieve's mind.
In a daze, Genevieve took a step toward Austin.
But Austin suddenly turned around and ushered Summer into the clinic.
Genevieve stood rooted to the spot, her blood running cold.
It was true... She had lost. She had lost everything.
Back home, Genevieve sat on the sofa with a hollow gaze. She had no idea how long she had been sitting there when she heard the lock click at the door.
Austin sat down beside her, not saying a word.
Amidst the suffocating silence, Genevieve spoke in a raspy voice, "We've been together for ten years."
They had survived the three-year itch and the seven-year itch, only to fall apart at the ten-year mark.
Austin remained silent.
"I really thought we would last much longer..." Genevieve choked up, unable to continue.
Their wedding vows had clearly promised they would grow old together...
She asked a pointless question, "Why? What makes her better than me?"
To her surprise, Austin actually answered, "Her last name is Brooks."
Genevieve's mind went completely blank.
She stared at him in disbelief, while his face remained perfectly calm. "That's all."
Genevieve suddenly burst into a bitter laugh.
Remembering what Amelia had said, she felt as if her heart were being sliced into a thousand pieces, making it hard to breathe.
After a long, agonizing silence, she spoke again. "Austin, I told you before, I'm not the type to cling to someone who doesn't want me."
Austin looked at her, and she met his gaze. "I wish you a brilliant future."
"Let's get a divorce."
Austin replied coldly, "Fine. But you leave with nothing."
