Chapter 1
From wife to ex-wife. From ex-wife to the woman who married his brother. Ten years. Genevieve White and Austin Hayes went from inseparable to standing on opposite sides of a line neither of them could ever cross back over. ***** December, Brenton. The first snow of the year. On their third wedding anniversary, Amelia Hayes kept her at the hospital, making things difficult for her until 11:30 p.m. before finally letting her leave. Snow was falling heavily outside. Since Genevieve hadn't driven, she dialed Austin's number. After a few rings, Austin's cold, deep voice came through the receiver. "What is it?" Hearing his voice, all the grievances Genevieve had suffered from Amelia that night rushed to the surface. Her voice cracked as she asked, "Can you come pick me up? It's snowing really hard out here..." "I'm busy." Austin interrupted coldly, his tone flat. "If you're tired, just take a cab back. Don't bother me with such trivial matters in the future." Genevieve's throat tightened. Before she could say another word, the call disconnected. She listened to the dial tone, a bitter ache spreading through her chest. They had been together for seven years and married for three. When they first started dating, Austin would stand in the snow for two hours outside the building where she worked part-time, just to walk her back to her dorm. He would hold her close and say, "The roads are slippery when it snows. I worry you'll fall if I'm not here." But now, those gestures had dwindled into "trivial matters"... As the wind and snow grew fiercer, Genevieve wrapped her down coat tightly around herself, waiting by the curb. With numb fingers, she scrolled through i********:, desperate for a distraction. She liked another post, but then her finger froze. It was a photo posted by Austin's assistant, Carter Ellis. Austin had accidentally been caught in the background. He was sitting in the office of the Vice President of Zenith Group, looking down at some documents. But on his desk sat a cup of pink bubble tea. Austin never drank stuff like that. So who'd left it in his office? Genevieve went to tap the photo to zoom in, but a notification popped up saying the post had been taken down. It happened in a matter of seconds, like somebody was scrambling to cover something up. The cold wind howled around her. A cab driver by the curb honked twice. "Hey, are you getting in or what?" Genevieve snapped out of her daze. "Yes," she stammered stiffly. By the time she got home, it was already past midnight. The moment Genevieve stepped inside, she noticed that the gift bag in the corner of the living room was gone. Inside that bag had been the trendy Starlight Bracelet Austin had bought. She had assumed it was meant to be her third-anniversary gift... As Genevieve stood there staring blankly, the front door opened. Austin, holding the doorknob, looked slightly surprised to see her. "Why aren't you asleep yet?" "I just got back." Genevieve pushed down her chaotic thoughts. Still clinging to a shred of hope, she asked softly, "Is there... anything you want to say to me today?" "Like what?" Austin didn't even glance at her. He loosened his tie and headed toward the bathroom. "If you're tired, go to bed early." Genevieve froze. She opened her mouth to speak, but the bathroom door shut, cutting off whatever she was about to say. Their anniversary... He had completely forgotten. Genevieve let out a soft sigh, a hollow, bitter chill settling deep in her chest. The next morning, Genevieve went straight to her studio. She had founded this architectural design studio after graduating, and it had built quite a reputation in the industry over the past two years. The moment she walked into the office, her young assistant, Jessica Reed, hurried over. "Genevieve, Zenith just called. They said we can't submit our design proposal directly this time. We have to compete against another studio for the contract." Jessica was absolutely furious. "Who do they think they are? Other companies beg for Apex's designs. We gave them a rock-bottom price, and now they're making us compete? What a joke!" Genevieve was also taken aback by the news. But seeing how worked up Jessica was, she offered a reassuring smile. "I'll deliver it myself. It's just a quick trip anyway." Though she had no idea what had caused this sudden change, she had absolute confidence that her design would win. That afternoon, Genevieve arrived at Zenith Group. Just as she reached the entrance of the office building, she spotted Austin's assistant, Carter Ellis. Thinking he was waiting for her, Genevieve started walking over, but a pink Porsche suddenly pulled up and stopped right in front of her. Genevieve stopped in her tracks as Carter rushed forward to open the car door. A very young woman stepped out. She couldn't help but ask, "Who is..." Only then did Carter notice Genevieve. His expression shifted slightly, but he quickly introduced them. "Genevieve, perfect timing. This is Miss Summer Brooks, daughter of the chairman of Brooks Corporation. She's representing Rainbow Studio." Rainbow was their competitor for this project. Genevieve looked at Summer. She was very young, with large, round eyes that brimmed with youthful energy. She looked like she had just graduated from college. The young woman immediately flashed a sweet smile and extended her hand. "Hello, Ms. White. You can just call me Summer." Summer... The daughter of the chairman of Brooks Corporation... Genevieve's brow twitched. She politely reached out to shake her hand, but her gaze suddenly froze. Peeking out from beneath Summer's slightly short sleeve was an incredibly familiar Starlight Bracelet.
