Chapter 2

Genevieve's breath caught in her throat. Following her gaze, Summer smiled and said, "My boyfriend gave me this. It's for our second anniversary." She had a boyfriend. The tension in Genevieve's chest suddenly dissolved, and she silently mocked herself for being paranoid. Austin wasn't the only person in the world who could buy that bracelet. Releasing a breath, she shook Summer's hand. "Your boyfriend has a great memory." She sighed inwardly. Austin used to remember every date that held special meaning for them, often gifting her roses and necklaces. But as time went on, that thoughtfulness had faded into nonexistence. Summer blinked playfully. "Well, men only remember the things they actually care about." Genevieve was momentarily taken aback. By the time she pulled herself together, Summer had already withdrawn her hand and walked away. Frowning slightly, Genevieve followed her into the building. As soon as they went upstairs, Summer was led away by a manager. With only the two of them left outside the office, Carter called out, "Genevieve." He looked down, hesitating for a long moment before stammering, "Um, a colleague treated us to bubble tea last night." Genevieve paused. Seeing Carter's obvious attempt to cover things up, she said nothing and walked straight into Austin's office. Austin was staring intently at a design blueprint. Genevieve's sharp eyes immediately spotted the Rainbow Studio logo on it. The design was mediocre, incomplete in many areas, and highly amateurish. It was hard to imagine how a draft like this had even reached Austin's desk. It should have been weeded out during Zenith's initial project review... Noticing her entrance, Austin set the draft down. "What are you doing here?" "I brought the design proposal." Genevieve averted her gaze and placed the folder containing the blueprints on Austin's desk. Austin opened it and took a brief glance. "You could have just had your assistant deliver this." His tone was entirely businesslike, without a single word of personal warmth. Genevieve was temporarily at a loss for words. She pressed her lips together. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a sticker on the corner of Austin's desk. It was a small, cute cartoon cat. Though tiny, the splash of color was incredibly jarring against Austin's otherwise stark, minimalist desk. Her heart skipped a beat, and she immediately asked, "What's that?" Austin spared it a brief glance. "Nothing." His tone was utterly dismissive, as if he couldn't even be bothered to make up an excuse. Genevieve's chest tightened. "I don't recall you ever liking things like that." Austin finally looked up from the documents, his gaze turning cold. "At the office, we are strictly business partners." Genevieve's face went pale. Before she could say another word, the door swung open. "Mr. Hayes, I've revised the parts you weren't happy with last time..." Summer was the one who walked in. Seeing Genevieve, she looked genuinely surprised and whispered to Austin, "Oh, did I interrupt something?" Austin glanced at Summer. "Wait outside for a moment." His usually cold voice carried a distinct trace of gentleness when lowered. Genevieve's heart sank. She watched as Summer blinked playfully. "Alright, then. Let me treat you to some bubble tea." With that, she set a cup of bubble tea on his desk. A pink cup. The exact same kind. A cold shiver crept up Genevieve's spine. She said stiffly, "You never used to drink things like that." Austin paused, then said, "I tried it, and it's not bad. If there's nothing else, you can leave." Genevieve stared at the man before her, feeling as though the blood in her veins had frozen into jagged shards of ice. As she walked out to the elevators, Carter caught up with her. "Genevieve, are you okay?" Genevieve stared at him blankly. Her intuition told her that the relationship between Austin and Summer was far from innocent. Carter had been by Austin's side for seven years. He had to know the truth. If she pushed him, she could get the answers. But when she opened her mouth, her voice came out in a raspy whisper. "I'm fine... Everything is fine." Genevieve was the only one in the elevator. Watching the glowing red numbers tick down, she felt her heart plummet, weightless and hollow. Her eyes welled with tears. Over the past two years, it wasn't as if she had never suspected Austin of having an affair. The endless late nights at the office, the faint trace of unfamiliar perfume on him when he came home past midnight... She had tried to convince herself that she was just being paranoid, but it turned out her suspicions were entirely justified. The next day, Genevieve arrived at the office early. The moment she walked in, Jessica rushed over, her face pale with anxiety. "Genevieve, Zenith sent our design proposal back this morning! They're accusing us of plagiarism!"
