Longest Day of The Year

1450 Words
(Jennifer) A loud crack and the faint smell of rotting eggs and I pulled back from myself, reeling, spinning. After a second that felt like minutes, I was thrown into a dark space, similar to the dungeon I just tried to escape. Did it work? Did they catch me? I tried to get my bearings, holding my stomach trying not to heave from the journey. A man turned around to face me, I couldn’t make out his features but I had a good guess of who it was. Who else would it be? “W-what where am I?” My eyes try to adjust to the dark surroundings, but I'm so disoriented. “Hmm, pretty still even wearing that hospital gown, we’re going to have to get you changed though.” He looks me up and down, I cover myself up and try to scoot back to no avail. A low chuckle escapes his lips. “I’m not the bad guy here. Well, maybe I am to some" He gives a wicked smile that makes my stomach churn, "But we’re on the same side, Jennifer.” “Where am I?” He looks around at our surroundings, small, dark and he shrugs. “Not the best place, I admit, but it's safe and secure. We’re not too far from your pack actually. Keep your enemies close and all that.” He grabs a lock of my hair and twists it in his fingers. I studied him, older than I usually liked but he had a slightly handsome face. “Ground rules.” He pulls back, “You are not to leave this place until I can trust you. I will tell you all that you need to know. No questions. You do as I say, and I will ensure us a mutual victory.” He smiles widely as I roll my eyes, he wasn’t the f.ucking boss of me, but I would let him think he was for the time being until I figured out where we were and what he was planning. “Glad you got rid of the baby by the way.” He studies my still bloated stomach, frowning a bit. I raise an eyebrow, “If by getting rid of you mean giving birth, then yes.” It was a relief not being pregnant anymore, “I would like to get some rest.” I say realizing how tired I was. I had no idea how long I was in labour, but I knew it woke me up during the night and I hadn’t got sleep since. “Fine. Rest a bit and then we start planning. I’ll need all your insight into their pack, your old pack.” I tried to stand and realize I can't feel my legs. “A little help please.” I motion to my legs and he sighs, throwing me over his shoulder, and pushes through what felt like a curtain on the wall and threw me on a narrow bed. I grunt as I hit the springy mattress and throw him a glare that he doesn’t react to. I don't bother to look around my surroundings. I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow, feeling more secure, and excited than I had in months. (Jackson) Cam’s men couldn’t find her scent anywhere around the packhouse. It confirmed what we already knew to be true, that it was some sort of magic. After we all got a few hours of rest, we were back in my office with all the information we needed and we were working back on everyone that was watching her from the night she disappeared to the moment she was thrown in the dungeon. “These logs look completely normal.” Lucas sighs, flipping through them again, “Her parents always visited together. Once a week, as was allowed.” He sits back in his chair, "Usually on a Tuesday." He adds. “There wasn’t much rotation of the people that were stationed in the dungeons, so at least that narrows it down to six people that were watching her. I’m going to question them all separately and see if anything was said. Maybe a pattern or a code.” Cam trails off thinking. “You think she came up with some secret code?” Lucas scoffs, looking at Cam, “I mean she’s smart, but not that smart.” “Anything is possible. Somehow she was able to obtain magic and escape.” Cam retorts, "If you don't remember she was actually pretty smart before her personality got clouded by jealousy." “I want this solved. As soon as possible.” I cut in dryly, “The safety of my pack is at risk and there has been a compromise of pack security either from one of our warriors or from the systems that we have in place and I want answers.” I bang my hands on the desk making them both jump. I was pissed honestly. There was no way this should have been able to happen. A prisoner on 24-hour watch escaped while under guard chained to a hospital bed. This made us look sloppy, look weak, and something like this could never happen again. “Yes, Alpha. I’ll figure it out. I promise.” Cam hangs his head and Lucas goes back to his visitor schedules. “I’m not sure if it’s anything, but there was one time that her dad visited her alone. The first visit actually, the morning after she was taken prisoner.” Lucas hands me the document and I stare at it, it didn’t mean anything really but something better than nothing. “And it was the only week that she had two visits.” He points out. “Thank you, Lucas.” I say staring at the sheet, still not sure if this was anything or if we were sleep-deprived and already grasping at straws, “Go talk to her parents, Cam.” I sigh and he sits up immediately, I knew he was waiting for this, “Come back here when you’re done. After that, we can talk to the guards separately.” “No news from any other packs, but they are on alert about our fugitive.” Lucas checks his phone again. I slump back in my seat, now that the adrenaline of the night wore off, I felt defeated. I needed answers to keep my pack safe, my Luna safe. Uh - Jackson? Yes, my love Why is there a warrior at our door? Just for protection for the time being, if Lucas Cam or I aren’t with you, a warrior will be She sighs in my mind - You didn't want to discuss this with me? You were sleeping Jackson I can’t have anything happen to you - I knew my voice sounded pleading, even in my mind She pauses for a minute, I think I might have really messed up, I just wanted her safe not to feel suffocated. I understand - I let out a sigh of relief I love you Love you too, I’ll be in my office after I grab some food I’ll stop by later _____________________ “They don’t seem to be lying.” Cam says, taking the seat across from me again, “They seemed genuinely shocked that she escaped. Her mom broke down immediately.” “That doesn’t mean much, that woman can be a loose cannon.” I sigh, Cam shrugs. “I know, but I didn’t get the feeling that they were lying.” “You do have a sixth sense about those things,” Lucas adds and I nod. I trusted his instincts and his interrogation methods completely. He had a way to work people into a corner using their words against them. “They were so sleep deprived anyway, it makes for a more honest interrogation. Passed with flying colors, unfortunately. It makes our job a whole lot harder now.” He runs his hands down his face. “They’re off house arrest but I want their home secured, no one comes or goes without me knowing.” “It’s already done, boss.” Cam flashes me a weak smile, I knew he was as mentally exhausted as I was. “Now we interrogate the warriors that were on guard, I want as much of this figured out today as we can.” I stand up and Lucas and Cam follow. “This has been the longest day of the year.” Lucas pushes the door open looking in front of us, looking back. “Yes, I get it,” Cam says, pushing him through the door.
