The beat *Chapter 1: The Replacement* The studio smelled like sweat and rosin and panic. _“Again!”_ Coach Vega clapped. _“From the lift. We have 3 weeks till Nationals and I do NOT have a male lead!”_ Maya stood center floor, breathing hard. Her ankle was throbbing but she didn’t show it. Cole was in the ER. Sprained ACL during practice yesterday. Out for the season. Two years of routines, gone. Their duet was supposed to win this. The doors opened and cold air rolled in with him. New guy. Tall. Black hoodie. Hair too long. He looked like he hadn’t slept in days. Transfer paperwork still in his hand. _“Noah Carter?”_ Coach Vega said. _“You said you danced competitively?”_ Noah just nodded. Didn’t smile. _“Great. You’re Maya’s new partner. Learn the routine by Friday.”_ Maya stared. _“Excuse me? By Friday?”_ _“Problem?”_ She forced a smile. _“No problem.”_ Later that night. Library. 11pm. The dance team wasn’t allowed in the studios after 10. So Maya dragged a table aside between the stacks and put on music from her phone. Low. She didn’t expect him to show up. But 10 minutes later, Noah walked in. No hoodie. Just a grey tee and dance pants. _“Coach said if I’m not ready by Friday, you’re both cut,”_ he said. _“I know.”_ They didn’t talk much. Just counted. _5, 6, 7, 8._ His hands were careful at first. Too careful. Like he was afraid he’d break her. By the third run-through, he wasn’t. The final lift of their routine — the one Cole always messed up — Noah got it on the first try. Strong. Steady. He held her there for a second too long. Her heart was pounding and it wasn’t from the dance. _“You’re good,”_ Maya said, trying to sound casual. _“You’re better,”_ Noah answered. Then looked away like he didn’t mean to say it. The library lights flickered. Security would do rounds soon. _“We should go,”_ Maya whispered. Noah didn’t move. His eyes were still on her. _“Tomorrow. Same time?”_ Maya nodded. Even though she had a boyfriend. Even though this was a bad idea. She told herself it was just for the competition. Chapter 2: After the Music Stops It was past midnight. The library was dead quiet except for the hum of the heater. Maya and Noah had been running the duet for 2 hours. No talking. Just counts and corrections. Her legs were shaking. His shirt was soaked through. _“Last time,”_ Maya said. _“Then we’re done.”_ The song started. Something slow, with piano. Not their competition song. She’d put it on by accident. But Noah didn’t stop her. He just held out his hand. They moved. Without the pressure of Nationals, without Coach yelling, it felt different. His hand at her back wasn’t just supporting her. It was _feeling_ her. When he spun her, he pulled her in closer than the choreography called for. When he lifted her, he didn’t set her down right away. For 3 seconds they just stood there. Her arms around his neck. His forehead almost touching hers. Breathing the same air. _“Maya—”_ he started. The song ended. She jumped back like she’d been burned. _“We should go.”_ _“Yeah,”_ Noah said. But neither of them moved for a second. He grabbed his hoodie. She grabbed her bag. At the door he paused. _“Tomorrow. Same time?”_ She nodded. Her heart was louder than her answer. She told herself it was the adrenaline. It wasn’t. Chapter 3: He Knows Cole was back. Crutches and all. He showed up to practice on Wednesday with a brace and a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. _“Just here to watch my girl,”_ he said, and kissed Maya in front of everyone. Maya felt sick. After practice, Cole waited for her by her car. _“You’ve been distant,”_ he said. _“Coach said you’ve been in the library late.”_ _“Just rehearsing,”_ Maya said fast. _“With Noah. We have to be ready.”_ _“With Noah,”_ Cole repeated. He looked toward the doors. Noah was walking out, alone. Cole’s jaw ticked. _“The new guy.”_ _“Don’t,”_ Maya said. _“Don’t what? Notice that you look at him different? That you come home smelling like his cologne?”_ Maya froze. _“It’s not like that.”_ _“Then what is it like?”_ She didn’t answer. Because she didn’t know. Cole stepped closer. _“I got hurt for us, Maya. For this team. For you. Don’t throw that away.”_ He got in his car and drove off. That night, Maya didn’t go to the library. Her phone buzzed at 11:30. Unknown number. _you coming?_ She stared at it for 10 minutes. Then she grabbed her dance bag. Chapter 4: Almost 11:47pm. Library, 3rd floor. The music was so low she could barely hear it. Noah was teaching her a new transition. His hands on her waist, guiding. _“Like this. Feel it?”_ _“Yeah,”_ Maya whispered. Footsteps in the hall. Both of them froze. Library security. Flashlight under the door. Noah killed the music. Maya dove behind a bookshelf, pulling him with her. Their backs against the shelves. Breathing hard. The door handle turned. Security guard: _“Hello? Someone in here?”_ Silence. He swept the flashlight across the tables. Past where their bags were. Maya squeezed her eyes shut. Noah’s hand found hers in the dark. Held it. _“Probably just the wind,”_ the guard muttered. _“Gonna lock up in 5.”_ The door closed. Footsteps faded. They didn’t move for a full minute. When they did, Maya was laughing quietly, panicked. _“That was so stupid,”_ she whispered. _“Yeah,”_ Noah said. He was still holding her hand. _“Stupid.”_ Neither of them let go. Outside, the first warning bell for closing rang. They had 5 minutes before they’d be locked in. Or caught. Chapter 5: Locked In The lights clicked off. Then the automatic locks clicked on. _“s**t,”_ Noah whispered. Maya pressed her forehead against the cold glass of the library doors. Dark. Empty halls. _“We’re locked in.”_ Her phone: 12:04am. No signal in this part of the library. Noah sat down on the floor between the shelves. Ran a hand through his hair. _“Coach finds out, we’re both off the team. Cole finds out—”_ _“I know,”_ Maya cut him off. She sat down too. Not too close. Not far enough. For a long time they didn’t talk. Just listened to the building settle. _“Why’d you come tonight?”_ Noah asked finally. Maya hugged her knees. _“Because when I’m dancing with you I don’t feel like I’m about to lose everything.”_ The words slipped out before she could catch them. Noah turned to her. _“You think you’re gonna lose Cole?”_ _“I think I already did.”_ She laughed, but it was shaky. _“The second I stopped pretending I wasn’t watching you in rehearsal.”_ The air got heavy. _“Maya,”_ Noah said. His voice was rough. _“I transferred here to get away from my ex. From all the drama. I told myself I wasn’t gonna do this. Not with someone who’s taken.”_ _“And yet here we are,”_ she said softly. _“And yet here we are,”_ he echoed. He reached over and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered. _“I’m not good at this,”_ he admitted. _“The talking part. I’m better at dancing.”_ _“Then dance with me,”_ Maya said. No music. No song. Noah stood and held out his hand. Maya took it. They moved slow between the bookshelves. Just swaying. His hands on her back, hers on his shoulders. Like they were the only two people in the world. When the song in her head ended, they were standing really close. _“Maya,”_ Noah whispered. She looked up at him. Footsteps. Real ones. Outside the door. _“Hello? Library’s closed.”_ A janitor’s voice. Keys jingling. They broke apart so fast. _“We’re in here!”_ Maya called, voice cracking. _“The doors locked on us!”_ The janitor opened the door 2 minutes later. Looked at them. Looked at their dance clothes. Sweat. _“You two rehearsing in here?”_ _“Yes sir,”_ Noah said smoothly. _“Studio was booked. Coach knows.”_ The janitor grunted. _“Get out. Don’t do it again.”_ They walked out into the cold night. Didn’t say a word. At her car, Maya turned to him. _“Tomorrow?”_ Noah nodded. _“Same time.”_ She drove home with her heart pounding for a reason that had nothing to do with dancing. *Chapter 6: Under the Lights* Thursday. 4pm. Main studio. The whole team was there. 20 dancers, all in sweats, all whispering. Coach Vega stood center floor with a clipboard and a look that said someone was in trouble. _“Change of plans,”_ she said. _“Nationals moved up. We perform in 10 days, not 3 weeks.”_ Groans. _“So we’re running full routines today. No breaks. And I’m re-pairing everyone to see what we’ve got.”_ Maya’s stomach dropped. Cole was in the corner, on crutches, watching. _“Maya Reyes.”_ _“Yes coach?”_ _“You’re with Noah Carter. Center floor. Let’s see this ‘library rehearsal’ everyone’s talking about.”_ The room went silent. _Library rehearsal?_ Maya could feel 20 pairs of eyes on her. She glanced at Cole. His face was stone. Noah walked to her. Didn’t say anything. Just held out his hand. The music started. Their competition piece. The hard one. The one with the lift at the end that Cole could never stick. They started counting. _5, 6, 7, 8._ And then… it was like the room disappeared. Noah’s hands were sure. His timing was perfect. He anticipated her turns before she made them. When he lifted her, he held her higher than the choreography asked. When she spun, she landed right in his arms, every time. It wasn’t practice. It was instinct. By the end, people were clapping. Not team-clapping. Real clapping. Coach Vega just stared. _“That,”_ she said. _“That is what winning looks like.”_ Maya was breathing hard. She looked up and saw Cole. He’d stood up. Crutches forgotten. He walked out. Didn’t look at her. After practice, Maya found him in the parking lot. _“Cole, wait.”_ _“Don’t,”_ he said. _“You looked at him like that during the whole dance. Like he’s the only person in the room.”_ _“It’s not—”_ _“It is. And everyone saw it.”_ He got in his car. _“I hope it was worth it.”_ She stood there while he drove off. Noah was behind her. _“You okay?”_ Maya shook her head. _“I don’t know.”_ That night, her phone blew up. Team group chat. Video of their rehearsal. Someone recorded it. Caption: _new partners??? 👀🔥_ 200 views in an hour. Maya turned her phone off. But the damage was done. Chapter 7: Smile For The Camera Friday morning. School news channel. _“Just act normal,”_ Noah whispered as they waited backstage. Maya tugged at her team jacket. _“Normal. Right.”_ The interviewer, Jenna from campus TV, smiled too wide. _“Okay we’re live in 3…2…”_ _“I’m here with Maya Reyes and Noah Carter, the new dance duo representing us at Nationals next week! You two look amazing together. How’d you get so in sync so fast?”_ Maya forced a laugh. _“A lot of late nights. Library’s got great acoustics.”_ Noah nearly choked. _“What she means is… extra studio time. Coach suggested it.”_ Jenna leaned in. _“There’s a video going around of you two. The chemistry is insane. Are you two… friends off the floor too?”_ Beat. Maya’s heart hammered. _“We’re teammates,”_ she said. _“We have one goal. Winning for the school.”_ Noah nodded. _“That’s it.”_ _“Well you look like winners to me,”_ Jenna said. _“Good luck at Nationals!”_ The second the camera cut, Maya exhaled. _“That was terrible,”_ Noah said. _“We survived,”_ Maya said. Her phone buzzed. 14 texts. All from the team. _‘sure jan’_ _‘teammates my ass’_ _‘Cole is gonna lose it’_ Chapter 8: The Office Coach Vega’s office smelled like coffee and disappointment. _“Sit,”_ she said. Didn’t look up from the video on her laptop. Their library rehearsal. The one from the group chat. Maya and Noah sat. Not touching. Not looking at each other. _“You want to explain this?”_ Coach paused the video right on the lift. Where Noah was holding Maya 2 seconds too long. _“We were rehearsing,”_ Maya said. _“At midnight. In the library. Alone.”_ Silence. _“Look,”_ Noah said. _“We didn’t mean for it to get out. We’re just trying to win.”_ Coach finally looked at them. _“Do you have feelings for each other?”_ Maya’s mouth went dry. _“Because if you do,”_ Coach continued, _“and it messes up this routine, I’m pulling you both. I don’t care how good you are.”_ Maya glanced at Noah. He gave the smallest nod. _“No,”_ Maya lied. Her voice shook. _“We’re professionals. That’s all.”_ Coach stared for a long time. Then sighed. _“Fine. But no more secret rehearsals. And if I see one more video, you’re both benched. Got it?”_ _“Yes coach,”_ they said together. Walking out, Noah muttered, _“We’re really bad liars.”_ _“Tell me about it,”_ Maya said. Chapter 9: He Tells Everyone Team meeting. 6pm. Everyone’s there. Cole stood up before Coach could start. On crutches, but standing. _“I’m not gonna sit here and pretend,”_ he said. The room went quiet. _“Maya and Noah have been sneaking around for weeks. In the library. After hours. And now you all saw the video.”_ People shifted. Some looked at the floor. _“She’s my girlfriend,”_ Cole said, voice breaking. _“Or she was. And he knew. He knew the whole time.”_ Maya stood up. _“Cole, stop.”_ _“Why? So you can keep lying?”_ _“Because this isn’t about you!”_ Maya snapped. _“This is about dancing. About winning.”_ _“Is it?”_ Cole laughed bitterly. _“Then why can’t you look at me the way you look at him?”_ Noah stood too. _“Don’t do this, man.”_ _“Don’t tell me what to do,”_ Cole shot back. _“You came here and took everything.”_ Coach slammed her clipboard down. _“Enough! Both of you, my office. Now. The rest of you, go home.”_ Maya looked at Noah as they walked out. This was it. No more hiding. Chapter 10: Benched _“You’re both off the routine.”_ Coach Vega’s words hit like ice. Monday morning. Her office again. This time no video. Just a printed email from the Dean. _“After the disturbance at Friday’s team meeting and the circulating footage, the administration is concerned about ‘distractions’ before Nationals. Effective immediately, Maya Reyes and Noah Carter are benched from competition routines.”_ Maya stared. _“But Coach, we’re the best shot the team has—”_ _“I know,”_ Coach cut her off. _“And it kills me. But I have to protect the whole team. You two made this about you.”_ Noah’s jaw was tight. _“So what now?”_ _“You can still train. You can still be alternates. But you don’t touch the floor at Nationals unless someone gets injured.”_ Outside the office, the team was already practicing. With new partners. Maya saw it through the studio glass. Her solo part. Danced by someone else. Cole wasn’t there. He’d quit the team that morning. Maya felt hollow. _“This is my fault.”_ _“No,”_ Noah said. _“This is ours. We should’ve been smarter.”_ That night they didn’t go to the library. They went to the parking garage. Empty. Concrete. Echoing. No music. Just their phones playing a metronome. _“If we can’t perform, we can at least get better,”_ Noah said. So they danced. In the cold. In the dark. No lifts. No flash. Just footwork and turns and the way their bodies remembered each other. Security kicked them out at 1am. _“We’ll be back tomorrow,”_ Maya said. Day 2 benched: The Dean called them in. Warning. Day 3: Someone posted another video. Them in the garage. Day 4: Coach pulled them in again. _“You’re making it worse.”_ _“Then let us dance,”_ Maya pleaded. _“Please. One last chance. Let us prove it’s about the dance.”_ Coach looked tired. _“Nationals is in 5 days. If you screw this up, it’s not just you. It’s 20 other kids.”_ _“We won’t,”_ Noah said. _“Give us one rehearsal. With everyone watching. If it’s not perfect, we walk.”_ Coach was quiet for a long time. _“Fine. Tomorrow. 7am. Whole team. You get one shot.”_ Chapter 10: Benched _“You’re both off the routine.”_ Coach Vega’s words hit like ice. Monday morning. Her office again. This time no video. Studio. Every single dancer was there. Sitting on the floor, arms crossed. Coach Vega in front. Dean in the back. And center floor: Maya and Noah. No music yet. Just silence. _“One dance,”_ Coach said. _“You mess up, you’re done. You make this about anything other than the routine, you’re done.”_ Maya’s hands were shaking. Noah squeezed her shoulder once. _“We’ve got this.”_ The music started. It was perfect. Clean lines. Hit counts. That lift — the one that got them in trouble — Noah held her steady for 4 full counts. When they finished, no one clapped. They were all waiting for Coach. Coach opened her mouth— The studio doors slammed open. Cole. Crutches gone. Walking with a limp, but walking. Team jacket on. _“You’re really gonna let them do this?”_ he said to the whole room. The Dean stood up. _“Mr. Bennett, this is a closed rehearsal.”_ _“I don’t care,”_ Cole said. He looked right at Maya. _“You’re throwing away 2 years. For what? For him?”_ Maya stepped forward. _“Cole, not now.”_ _“When then? After you win with him?”_ He turned to Noah. _“You knew she had a boyfriend. You did this on purpose.”_ Noah didn’t move. _“I didn’t plan any of this, man. But I’m not gonna apologize for being her partner.”_ _“Partner,”_ Cole spat. _“That’s what we’re calling it now?”_ The team was dead silent. Some people looked away. Some were filming. Coach slammed her clipboard on the floor. _“ENOUGH!”_ Everyone jumped. _“Cole, out. Now. Or I’m calling campus security.”_ _“Fine,”_ Cole said. But before he left he looked at Maya. _“I hope he’s worth it.”_ Door closed. The silence was worse than the yelling. Coach stared at Maya, then Noah. Then the team. She sighed. Long and tired. _“That was the messiest rehearsal I’ve ever seen. And also the best one.”_ She looked at the Dean. The Dean nodded once. Coach turned back. _“You’re reinstated. Both of you. Nationals. Final routine. Don’t make me regret this.”_ Maya exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for 4 days. Noah just nodded, but his hand found hers for half a second. The team clapped. Quiet at first. Then louder. Outside the studio, Maya could hear Cole’s car peel out of the parking lot. Chapter 12: Nationals Backstage. 10 minutes to showtime. The air smelled like hairspray, nerves, and rosin. 12 teams. One stage. Maya was stretching. Noah was lacing his shoes. Neither of them talked much. _“Maya.”_ She turned. Cole. He wasn’t supposed to be here. He wasn’t on the team. _“Security let me in,”_ he said. _“One last talk.”_ Maya’s stomach dropped. _“Cole, I can’t do this right now.”_ _“You can do 4 minutes on stage with him but you can’t do 2 minutes with me?”_ He stepped closer. _“You know you’re gonna regret this, right? The second the music stops and it’s just you and him and no trophy. You’re gonna remember who was there for you first.”_ Noah stood up. _“She doesn’t need this right now.”_ _“Stay out of it,”_ Cole snapped. Then back to Maya. _“Is he worth throwing us away for? Be honest.”_ Maya looked at him. Really looked. The boy she’d loved for 2 years. The boy she’d planned a future with. _“I’m sorry, Cole,”_ she said quietly. _“But yes. The dance is.”_ Cole’s face fell. He nodded once and walked out. _“You okay?”_ Noah asked. Maya took a deep breath. _“Yeah. Let’s go.”_ The Dance Lights down. One spotlight. Music started — piano, slow, then drums. _5, 6, 7, 8._ They moved. It wasn’t just a routine anymore. It was everything. The secret rehearsals. The library. The garage. The office. The fight. All of it went into every turn, every catch. Noah lifted her and she didn’t think about falling. She spun and landed in his arms like gravity didn’t exist. When he dipped her, his hand was at her back, steady. When she jumped, he was already there to meet her. The crowd was silent. Watching. Last lift. The hardest one. Noah threw her up, caught her, held her there above his head. 4 counts. Heart pounding. Down. Into the final pose. Foreheads almost touching. Breathing hard. Blackout. 3 seconds of silence. Then the whole auditorium exploded. Chapter 13: The Award Backstage. 30 minutes later. _“And for Best Duo Performance at Nationals…”_ Maya squeezed Noah’s hand. _“Maya Reyes and Noah Carter, Westbrook University!”_ They froze. Then screamed. Trophy was heavy. Gold. Their names were gonna be on the school website forever. On stage, flashbulbs. Coach was crying in the front row. The whole team was losing it. Noah leaned into the mic. _“We worked really hard for this. Thanks to our team.”_ Maya added, _“And to everyone who believed in us. Even when it was messy.”_ After, in the hallway, away from cameras: _“We did it,”_ Noah said. _“We did,”_ Maya said. He looked at her. Really looked. No music. No counts. No hiding. _“So… what are we now? When it’s not about the dance?”_ Maya smiled. _“I don’t know. But I’d like to find out. Without the library.”_ Noah laughed and pulled her into a hug. Not a lift. Just a hug. _“Deal.”_ Across the lobby, Cole was watching. He didn’t come over. He just turned and left. Maya didn’t chase him. Because for the first time in a long time, she wasn’t dancing for anyone but herself. And the person she wanted to dance with next. THE END
