Chapter 1: A Bitter Beginning
The cold wind howled through the desolate alleyway, its icy breath biting at the skin of the child lying motionless on the wet cobblestones. She was only seven, yet her tiny body had already endured more than most adults would in an entire lifetime. A small, frail figure, with tattered clothes clinging to her emaciated frame, and her face, bruised and streaked with dirt, was barely visible beneath the filthy strands of matted hair. A faint cough echoed in the stillness, a desperate plea for help from a body on the verge of collapse. Her body trembled as if the very earth was rejecting her existence. But there was no one to hear, no one to care. "Please... someone..." the child whispered, her voice barely audible, lost in the vast emptiness of the night. It was then that the faint sound of footsteps reached her ears, slow and deliberate, as if they belonged to someone who was watching, waiting. The child’s heart skipped a beat, her eyes flickering open, but her vision was blurred, her strength drained. She blinked twice, trying to clear the fog, and a figure slowly emerged from the shadows, its silhouette tall and ominous. A man. His face was partially obscured by the brim of a dark hat, but his eyes gleamed with an unsettling calmness, as though this moment were nothing more than another mundane event in his day. "You're in trouble, little girl," he said, his voice smooth, yet cold, like the touch of a steel blade. The child tried to speak, but the words got stuck in her throat. Fear, terror, and pain choked her from within. She wanted to run, to escape, but her legs wouldn’t obey. The man knelt beside her, his gloved hand reaching for her shoulder with a surprising tenderness. "Don’t be afraid," he murmured, but his smile was anything but reassuring. "You’re not the first to be abandoned like this. And you won’t be the last." The child recoiled at his touch, her small body wracked with sobs. Her heart raced, and her mind screamed for escape. Memories of the past flooded her like a torrent—memories of a mother who never cared, of a father who had never looked back after abandoning her in the cold, of the cruel aunt who had left her to fend for herself in a house filled with shadows. But it was her grandfather, an old man with a broken heart, who had been the only one to care for her. The warmth of his embrace, the stories he told her about the stars, about hope, about love—those were the things that had kept her alive. But now, he was gone, taken by an illness that had ravaged his body too quickly, too violently. The child had been left alone, with no one but herself to rely on. And now, this stranger—this faceless man—loomed over her like a specter, and she had no idea whether he would bring salvation or doom. "Please," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Help me... I’m so cold... please..." The man’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second, then hardened again. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, crumpled piece of paper. He unfolded it carefully, his fingers moving with practiced precision. "Your grandfather," the man said softly, his voice almost... pitying. "He left you a message. A warning. He knew this day would come." The child stared at him, confusion clouding her thoughts. How did this man know about her grandfather? And what message was he talking about? Before she could ask, the man stood up, his shadow falling over her like a dark veil. He turned away, as if he was preparing to leave. "Come with me," he said. "There’s much you don’t know. You’ve been living in the dark for far too long." The child’s heart thudded painfully in her chest, a thousand questions tumbling in her mind. Should she trust him? Was he lying? Was there a chance for escape, or would this stranger lead her deeper into the abyss? In that moment, a strange, unfamiliar feeling washed over her—something sharp, something ancient—like the stirring of a long-forgotten power within her. Her grandfather had spoken of such things—of forces beyond this world, of the hidden potentials that lay dormant in every soul. With a trembling breath, she slowly lifted her hand, clutching the hem of the man’s coat. "I’ll go with you," she whispered, her voice barely audible, but firm. "But you ‘, his eyes gleaming with an unreadable expression. "Everything, you say?" he mused, almost as if testing the weight of her words. "Very well," he said. "But remember—once you step onto this path, there is no turning back." The child swallowed hard, the fear gnawing at her gut, but something inside her—something deep and primal—told her this was the only choice she had. She had nothing left. Not family, not home, not even a future. "Lead the way," she said, her voice steady despite the storm of emotions raging inside her. The man nodded, turning back toward the shadows, and she followed him, her footsteps uncertain but resolute. She didn’t know where he was taking her or what he wanted from her. All she knew was that this was only the beginning—of a journey that would take her far from everything she had ever known. And that, in itself, was enough to terrify her.
