The big shocker pt 2.

1730 Words
Standing in front of the mirror, I put both hands on my flustered cheeks. Dennis freaking Henney just kissed me, and it was everything I had imagined my first kiss to be. A flustered smile crossed my face as I recalled that he had called me the most beautiful girl today. I observed my oblong face, framed by my ash-blonde hair, with large green eyes beneath delicately arched brows. At that moment, I truly felt beautiful. It was quite a flex coming from Dennis. One more second in his presence, and I was close to passing out from excitement. Noticing that my face was a little flushed, I reached for my pulse, took out my lipstick, retouched my lips, and then smoothed my hair before placing it back inside my bag. Suddenly, the bathroom door swung open, and I glimpsed Chelsea. She stood at the door with her fist clenched. "I guess you think you've finally struck the jackpot, huh?" There was bitterness in her tone and a sense of hatred evident in the rigid set of her shoulders. "Well, you're in for a shocker." "Now, now," I began, my lips curving tightly. "What the hell are you talking about? I didn't force him into anything, did I?" "Humph!" She scoffed and nodded. She looked down for a second, seemingly debating, before meeting my gaze. Her lips curled in scorn as she turned to leave. "One more thing," she said as she was leaving, ignoring my grim expression. "I know it will never work out. So save yourself the embarrassment." A smile touched her lips as our eyes met, but I couldn't read anything in the darkness of her eyes. There was something about the way she looked at me. It seemed like she knew something and was mocking me. It felt as if she was certain that Dennis and I were destined to fail, and she appeared quite confident about it. I added a touch of color to my cheeks, turned on the faucet, and rinsed my hands before grabbing my purse and slinging the spaghetti strap over my shoulder as I exited the bathroom. As I made my way through the thinning crowd of guests in the hall, I scanned the room in search of Dennis. Harley approached me with quick strides, grinning with her wry curls bouncing. "Alice, girl, you're on fire! I saw the kiss; it was amazing, wasn't it?" I nodded, a flush of excitement appearing on my face. "Oh, it was. It was glorious, Harley. It was everything I ever dreamed of." "I'm so happy for you, Al. You deserve it all," she said, smiling. "Now come on, don't keep Prince Charming waiting." She cheerfully linked her arm with mine. I looked around the hall, searching for Dennis. "I didn't see him anywhere," I said, turning to Harley. "I think he went outside with his friends," she replied, nodding with a smile. "I have some business to attend to." She took a sip of her lemonade before handing it to me. "Could you help me with this?" I watched as she hurried towards Jake, our classmate, who had been interested in her for a while. Harley was never one to get serious with boys; she just wanted to have fun and play around. I took the glass of lemonade to my mouth and took a sip, nearly spilling it when I tasted alcohol. Yikes! I wasn't a big fan of alcohol, but I couldn't help but chuckle when I realized that Harley had smuggled it into the dance. That was so Harley. I shook my head with a smile before making my way to a nearby table to dispose of the glass of lemonade. As I made my way outside, curious gazes lingered on my back—some filled with admiration, others with pure scorn. The sound of murmuring echoed in my ears as I walked quietly. I was about to step outside when the all-too-familiar voice of Annabel halted me. "You silly b***h!" she shot at me resentfully. "You...sto..stole... him from me." I turned back, my eyes moving from Annabel to Cristabal, amusement written all over my face as I took in their seemingly drunk and disheveled state. They were staggering, their hair was a mess, and one of Cristabal's heels was broken. Annabel's dress had ripped at the lower edge. They were a bloody mess! "I think you both have had enough for the night," I said, taking in a deep breath. "Maybe the two of you should go home." "And...leave...you here..." Annabel chided amidst stutters, her legs unbalanced and shaking profusely. She was a second away from falling down. "...with Dennissh?" "Maybe I should leave you both," I sighed heavily, "to sort yourselves out." Then I turned my back and started to walk away from them. "I hate you!" Cristabel yelled, her voice raging over my shoulders. "You evil b***h!" I lowered my lashes, embarrassed by their shameful display that had drawn a few people's attention. I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, then placed my hands over my ears to block out their silly ranting. Finally, I stepped outside and sighed with relief as I distanced myself from their chaos. The air was cool and crisp, a gentle breeze brushing against my skin. My eyes roamed freely, taking in my surroundings. On the far right, some of the students were engaging in some serious foreplay; they seemed too drunk and in the mood. I looked away, my eyes searching for any sigh of Dennis. Just where did he go? Already I was feeling so uncomfortable with the almost erotic atmosphere; these people needed to get a room, so I moved farther away and found myself just in front of the woods. I paused suddenly, and a familiar feeling crept in through me; it was as if I'd been here before, but I couldn't recall any such happenings. Curious, I let my legs carry me further inside as the darkness enveloped me. A warning bell sounded in my head, but I shoved it aside immediately, just as it had invaded my thoughts. The thick canopy overhead blocked out almost every inch of moonlight, making it hard to see where I was going. The silence was eerie. I could hear the crunching of sticks and leaves underfoot, but it seemed like every other sound had been silenced. My heart was beating fast, bringing beads of sweat to form on my forehead. I continued in quiet, slow strides, letting the crisp air guide me farther; it was as if a magnetic force was pulling me in. Suddenly, the air carried the voice of someone to my ears. Impulsively, I stopped short, my ears standing alert, curious as to where the voice was coming from. "I'm glad y'all took care of the rogues," the voice was saying now. "I didn't want blood on me. At least not tonight." I winced at the mention of blood, and my heartbeat quickened because the voice sounded familiar—like Dennis. But why would he be in the woods talking about blood and rogues? What was even a ROGUES? "So, Den, how's your little plan going?" My ears twitched impulsively, and another voice was asking, "You both were kind of cozy earlier on." The sound of chuckles echoed, and my chest pounded heavily with anxious anticipation. "Oh yeah, I told y'all she was easy." His words were like a knife straight to my heart. "Tonight I'll sleep with her and then dump her scrawny ass. That will teach her not to mess with me ever again." They laughed. My eyes widened like saucers. No, no, this can't be real; it was all a plan. My eyes pricked with unshed tears, threatening to spill. "I mean, why would I want to be with a weak human?" He continued, "when I can just wait until I recognize my mate." I stepped back impulsively. My shock was palpable, and my heart felt like it had been ripped out of my chest. Had I been only a conquest to him? And what's the deal with "Humans" and "Mates"? Something was definitely wrong. "I bet she…" Dennis trailed off as I accidentally snapped a stick with my leg. My hand flew to my mouth, but it was too late. "Did you hear that?" Dennis asked. "Who's there?" Dread washed over me as I stood rooted to the spot. I sensed movement behind me and panicked, unsure of what to do next. Finally, I let my legs carry me deeper into the woods. I ran as fast as I could, my heart pounding in my chest, the sound of my heels clicking on the ground beneath me. My breath came out in ragged gasps as I pushed myself even harder. I knew I was being chased, and the thought sent a chill down my spine when suddenly the all too familiar growling and howling of a wolf—no, no wolves—echoed throughout the dark woods. The sound of the wolves behind me was growing louder by the second, and I could feel their hot breaths on my heels. I had to keep moving, keep running for my life, but my adrenaline made my lips feel heavy, and I struggled to keep up in my mermaid-style dress and stilettos. My legs began to feel heavy and tired. Then, I felt something brush against my leg, causing me to stumble. I looked back, and through the darkness, I saw the glowing eyes of the wolves, filled with rage. My heart raced as they closed in on me. Turning around, I prepared to give up all hope. But then, a white wolf charged out of the woods, snarling and growling with red eyes. The other wolves scattered, seemingly afraid of this new wolf. I stopped dead in my tracks, watching in stunned disbelief as the new wolf stood before me, his eyes piercing blue now, all too familiar, just like... like Dennis. I was stunned and confused as the thought of the wolf echoed in my head, as though I could read its mind, urging me to run, and now! And so, heart racing, I did just that, running as fast as I could, my stilettos clicking on the ground, away from the woods. I knew my life was about to change drastically.
