Golden werewolves.

I was hysterical and shaking all over when I reached for the doorknob. My hands trembled frantically as I struggled to place the key in its hole. Somehow, I managed to enter inside and flick the light switch on, illuminating the sitting room, for suddenly, I hated the darkness. My throat bobbed in terror when I realized I was home alone. The twins weren't home yet, and of course, my aunt wouldn't be making an appearance until morning. To leave the lights on or not, I decided on leaving them on. Who knew if those creatures would decide to come back for me? It was best to have them believe I wasn't home alone, not that it mattered anyway. I reached my room, bolting the door lock before slowly creeping under my bed cover. My breathing was rapid and uneven, and my teeth were clamping as though I had a cold. A feeling of dread jolted through me like electricity as I recalled every detail of the last thirty minutes. He wanted to use and discard me as revenge. And then, was it really Dennis who turned into that thing, a wolf? The realization dawned on me: three wolves, the golden trio! Suddenly, the scene when Dennis picked up that book, Harley's book about werewolves, played on my mind. I sprung up on my feet, reaching for my school bag on top of my small desk. With my fingers trembling, I managed to unzip it, bringing out the book. I took a deep breath before flicking through its pages. The first line my eyes caught was: "Werewolves are shifters and have the ability to assume both human and wolf forms." Every hair on my body stood on end as reality struck me—Dennis was indeed a werewolf. In the next hour, I immersed myself in the book, learning facts about werewolves: they were territorial, possessive, hierarchical, and they served the moon goddess. They were also allergic to wolfsbane. I was both terrified and dumbfounded by these facts. And then each werewolf was given a lifetime mate by the moon goddess. Was this the reason Dennis mentioned waiting for his mate or something? I swallowed hard when I read how dangerous, ferocious, and scary they were. I was doomed. Maybe I should drop out of school and run away from here, maybe get an apartment. I face-palmed when it dawned on me that I had used up a large chunk of my savings to buy an expensive dress, the one that I was wearing, and that it was now torn. Maybe I could ask Aunt Claire to give me my little inheritance. It was left to me by my parents for my university education. The university could wait. But what have I gotten myself into by getting involved with not one but three werewolves? I collapsed on my bed, kicking the air with my legs while simultaneously tugging hard at my hair. But he did save me; maybe he doesn't want me dead? But how did I hear the voice of the wolf in my head? Plus, in my dream earlier, it happened exactly as in my dream. It wasn't the first time either; I actually did dream about a white wolf and a red-haired scary woman. Was Dennis the white wolf that saved me from that woman, and who is she? Did I see into the future? And now, hearing thoughts of animals, like telepathy? Argh! I don't know anymore. I'm freaking tired. Maybe I should just run. I have Saturday and Sunday to make a decision. On Monday, my features wore a grim mask of fear as I found myself in school. Don't ask how I managed enough courage to come to school, because I didn't! I just wanted to be done with high school and escape the clutches of my aunt and her twin devils. This past weekend was hell for me; I had to help the twins with their hangover when they returned that Saturday morning. Anna freaking puked on me. I was forced to clean up after her. In fact, I felt like she did it on purpose. As for my aunt, after confronting her, I found those recent mails were from the bank threatening to take our house due to the debt she had incurred from gambling away all the money from the laundry business. So, she was left with no other option, according to her, but to use the money my parents had left for me. I was devastated and left with no other choice but to come here. If being killed was my only escape, then so be it, rather than staying any more seconds in that hell. My heartbeat had been uneven since I entered the school premises. As usual, I was dressed in my usual gray hoodie over baggy denim pants. I draped my hoodie over my face, somehow hoping to disappear from all the attention and curious eyes that were boring into my back. I knew it was mostly because of the turnaround—my kiss with Dennis. Oh, they had no idea their precious golden trio were indeed golden werewolves. I approached my locker slowly, cautiously roaming my eyes around. So far, there has been no sign of Dennis and the golden werewolves. "Alice." I jumped, a loud gasp escaping my mouth. "Whoa, chill, it's me." "Harles…" I breathed, turning toward her. She looked confused, with a cup of coffee in one hand. "Why did you scare me like that?" "I barely called your name." She narrowed her eyes, and I could sense the worry emitting from them. "Are you OK, Al?" My heart was beating like a drum, but I managed a smile. "I'm OK, Harley." I lied smoothly, looking her straight in the eyes. "I was just... paranoid." I laughed. She nodded, a bit hesitant, and her hazel eyes appeared unreadable for a moment, but she shrugged it off. "So what happened?" she said, sipping on her coffee. "You left with Dennis, I presume, without saying a word to me." I internally snorted. She had no idea. Her lips curled into a mischievous smile. "So tell me, how did it go?" "Uhm...nothing, Harles. Nothing happened." My lashes fluttered, and I looked away, rummaging inside my locker. "We... I just went straight home." "Huh?" She arched a brow and jammed a hand against her hip. "Even after that kiss?" "Yeah," I said simply, clanking my locker shut. Just then, the sound of the bell echoed around the hall, to my delight. "Come on," I prompted her, not giving room for any further questioning, "we don't want to be late for Mr Andrew's class." "Wait!" She dramatically placed a hand in the air to stop me. I turned around, meeting her gaze. "Happy birthday, Alice!" My eyes widened in surprise as Harley took out a box of chocolates from inside her bag, extending it towards me. My cheeks heated up in surprise. "Wow, Harles. I didn't even remember it was today." I took the chocolates from her. "Thank you so much, Harles. You're a darling." I leaned forward and placed my arms around her, hugging her briefly before stepping back. "You're welcome, Al," she said. "Why don't you go ahead of me?" She zipped her bag with one hand. "I'll be right behind you. I need to get my books." "They're inside your locker. You dropped your keys along with the books, so I have already placed them there for you." "I'm so careless." She facepalmed. "Thanks, Al. I'll go get them." I nodded and started to head to class. I opened my bag, placing the chocolates inside before zipping it closed. It was so thoughtful of Harley. I had been so preoccupied with other stuff that I didn't realize today was my birthday, and I had just turned 18 years old. I wish I could tell Harley about this whole thing. Maybe she could offer some advice, especially since she had a book about werewolves. But I was scared. I didn't want to implicate her, plus I had already returned the book to her locker. I approached the classroom but suddenly winced as someone caught my arm in a tight grip and pulled me into a room—the music room.
