Chapter 1: Part 1
POV: Amber
I was sitting with two of my three best friends, Camilla, and Zoey, studying when my phone rang. It was my boyfriend Damion, who I haven’t seen or heard from in a couple of days.
“Hey baby.” I said with a huge smile on my face.
“Hey, I was actually hoping that you didn’t pick up.” Damion said on the other end of the phone.
I scrunched my face in confusion, “Why?”
There was a long pause, I could hear that Damion was in a car.
“What’s wrong?” Camilla mouthed.
I shrugged and asked, “Are you still there?”
“Yeah, um,” Damion said. “I’ve been doing some thinking over the past few days.”
I started biting on the eraser of my pencil and thought about our latest argument. This time it was over him getting mad about me not going to a frat party with him. I literally had to study for one of the first exams of the semester. He felt like I never had time for him and was using school as an excuse. Sometimes it felt like we were in college for two different reasons. He just wanted to socialize, and I really wanted to achieve my dream of becoming a family attorney like my mom.
“Is this why you’ve been avoiding me for a week?” I asked.
“Yeah.”
We would have these blowouts and not talk for a couple of days. We would both do some thinking and after a few days, one of us would swallow our pride and be the first to call. This had been the longest we’ve gone without talking in a while. I did try calling a few times, but he would never answer.
To be honest, for the last six months it felt like Damion was starting more and more issues just to get away from me. To say, we were close in high school is an understatement, but it was clear that we were slowly drifting. I was hoping to find a way to pull us back, but I wasn’t having any luck.
It didn’t help that, Camilla hated him, and Zoey only tolerated him. They both felt like he was toxic as f**k and were always on me about leaving him. They both believed I only felt it was normal to go days without speaking is because he conditioned me to think so. They would sneak and introduce me to guys all the time or try to get me to leave him. But I was so sure I wanted to marry Damion, so I kept our relationship going. Even though, my girls were starting to win the battle of me leaving his sorry ass.
“So,” I said after another long pause, “what have you been thinking about?”
“Um, I think we should take a break.”
I licked my lips, “A break?”
“A what?” Zoey questioned making a stank face.
“I know that B.A.N ain’t breaking up with you over a phone call?” Camilla huffed.
I waved my hand at them to be quiet. “Are you serious?”
“Look,” Damion said, “I know we’ve been together or whatever for a while.”
“Or whatever?” I said, rolling my eyes. “We’ve been together for almost six years. And you’re seriously doing this over the phone? No, wait, you wanted to do this to my voicemail!”
“I don’t know what you want, Amber. I know that you know, we’ve been falling apart.”
“The only reason we’re falling apart is because you rather be out drinking and s**t with your bros than be with me.”
“All you do is study! We just turned twenty-one, it’s time to party.”
“You and I both know that I have to work hard so I can get into law school. So, what the f**k? You said you had my back Dee!”
“Saying and doing are two different things, I’m tired of going to sleep alone and coming second to your studying.”
“You know what? f**k you, Damion, you f*****g p***y. You could’ve came to me and just told me how you felt. You act like I’m f*****g cheating on you! I’ve always made time for you, and you know that! I don’t have to party every f*****g weekend so you can look good in front of your virgin ass friends.”
“We can still be friends.”
“You can stick that friendship up your ass!” I yelled before hanging up.
I threw my phone against one of the walls in the study room we were in.
“So?” Zoey said.
“That went well.” Camilla added.
I started crying, “I can’t believe him! I really thought I could fix this and make it work!”
“We all know that it was time, girl.”
I rolled my eyes, “I know, but after all this time, to hang up with me over the phone? And then to use my studying habits as the reason?”
“Yeah, that’s definitely some p***y shit.” Zoey agreed.
“Besides, it’s hella fine college men here and they’ve hella been checking you out.” Camilla teased as she handed my phone to me.
“Damn, she’s only been single for ten seconds.” Zoey said throwing a gummy bear at her.
“Wrong, she just accepted that she was single ten seconds ago. She’s been single since Damion joined that cult; I mean fraternity.”
“You’re so annoying.” I laughed.
“Anyways,” Camilla said with a grin, “Maddy told me about this party tonight, we should go.”
Madison is my other best friend and is a part of one of the sororities on campus. She also hated Damion, so I know she would be happy to hear the news.
“Girl, we have a test Monday.” Zoey said, pointing her pencil at Camilla.
