CHAPTER 1- AURORA
I have a pretty normal life. Well, that was before I found out that I have a follower. No, not social media type of follower. I mean someone is actually following me, without me knowing until now. So my day was going pretty normal until I went out of the house with the Florida sun beating down on me, while I was standing on the scalding, concrete driveway. I was in full sun when I saw for a sliver of a second, a light pink shadow. For some reason, I knew that it was a shadow, not a light. I thought I was hallucinating, and that was what I thought for three days. Three days later, I felt a warm wind on my neck, like a breath, without someone behind me close enough that I could feel their breath in the crowded school hallway. I thought about it, but it didn't make any sense. I was confused. Why would this happen? I surely couldn't have imagined it. I decided to corner who this was if there was a,” someone.” I shuddered at the thought. Uhh... Why am I thinking of aliens at a time like this? I knew this was real when I heard a muffled howl of pain when I slammed the door quickly after me. It was there. I opened the door to see… nothing. I slumped, defeated against the wall.
I whispered, hopefully, "I know you're there. Please come out." No one answered my pleas. I, saddened and drained from hope, walked back inside my room. I heard a whisper about seven minutes later.
"I know you know of my existence, your majesty," the voice said. I didn't miss the phrase "your majesty."
I can barely choke back a laugh as I ask, "Your majesty?"
The voice realizes their slip and says, "Yes. You're our future leader. "
I sputter, "Me? Out of all of the human race, you choose me?" Not like I would believe such nonsense.
"Yes, you. You are the only other heir to the throne. My job is to protect you."
"Well if that is true, can you at least turn visible?"
"No. I am under strict orders. Only if royalty demands me to take their new orders."
"Well then, I demand you turn visible at once!"
"As you say, miss." He reappeared to a boy that just wore a pair of short pants. He had the most handsome features put together into one person. His wonderfully tanned skin was displayed and I stared in awe at his impressive build. He had gorgeous, ruffled, jet black hair that looked stylish in a way that made him look even better. The best part about him was the piercing, ice-blue eyes, that were surprisingly warm. "I have to have as much bare skin exposed as possible since it helps me connect better with the light and the shadows," he explained, when he noticed me staring at his bare chest.
"So, are you like Superman or something?" He laughed. He laughed so hard that tears started to stream down his tanned face. His laugh was an amazing sound. It sounded like a bird whistling on a warm, sunny day and a music box twinkling its tune. He looked at me, with pure glee in his blue eyes.
"No. We mainly have great abilities that aid us. They aid us when we need to fight off the Shards. The Shards are a not-so-secret organization that does not believe in inter special forces and peace. They believe that we, the Elvin people, should not join forces with the other species. We are at war with them and having your betrothal set with Prince Kander will restore happiness to the kingdom. I will show you the place where we all live now if you want." My brain was still on auto-repeat: betrothal, betrothal, betrothal.
"I have to marry someone I don't even know!?!"
"I will introduce him to you on another trip. Excuse me for my rudeness, your highness, my name is Atreyu. It means, ‘warrior.’ Do you want to go?"
"Sure," I mumbled. He says some words I don't know, and does some weird movement with his wrist and then there becomes a rippling, iridescent hole next to him. I follow him into the hole.
