Prologue
Prologue
The vast canopy of heaven shifted without warning, the serene afternoon azure dissolving into a chaotic marriage of bruised ash and bleeding crimson. A heavy stillness blanketed the dense wilderness for a heartbeat before the atmosphere violently ruptured. Thunder rolled across the jagged peaks, vibrating deep within the marrow of the earth, followed immediately by blinding forks of lightning that split the humid air. When those violent electrical arcs struck the broad, fleshy leaves of the surrounding aglaonema bushes, the foliage shredded instantly into floating green ribbons, releasing a sharp, acrid scent of scorched vegetation and ozone into the damp evening wind.
Luna Solene raised her chin, her dark eyes reflecting the unnatural tempest above as her fingers tightened around the woven rim of her foraging basket. "A storm is certain," she whispered firmly, her voice carrying a quiet note of dread that matched the darkening horizon.
She was deep within the forbidden territory of the ancient woods, wandering far from the safety of her people. Long before the elders of the Cavegate Pack bestowed upon her the sacred title of Luna, her days had been spent tending to the sick and injured as a humble healer of her native town. That deep rooted calling was the sole reason she braved the shadowed thickets this evening, searching for rare medicinal herbs that only bloomed when rain threatened to drown the valleys.
Following three deafening cracks of thunder and five jagged, successive ribbons of lightning that illuminated the forest like daylight, the skies completely broke open. Rain did not merely fall; it cascaded in heavy, blinding sheets that instantly transformed the dry forest floor into a churning river of mud and decaying leaves. She turned her boots toward the narrow pathway leading back to the safety of her pack borders when a piercing sound cut sharply through the roaring deluge. It was a cry of pure terror echoing from the gloom not far away.
"Help me! Help me!" cried a child she did not know, his voice raw with panic and stripped of all hope.
Raised by her departed parents with a profound sense of duty and boundless compassion, Luna Solene abandoned all thoughts of seeking immediate shelter from the violent storm. Instead of fleeing to protect herself, her legs reacted with instantaneous speed, driving her forward through the punishing rain straight toward the direction from which the desperate pleas originated.
"Where are you?! Child?! Where are you?! Shout again so I can hear you!" she called out into the roaring gale, straining every sense to catch the slightest vibration in the drenched air.
"Is someone there? Please help me! I am here! I fell into a hole to the right of the large Acacia Tree with lilac and pink leaves!" provided the child, offering directions that Solene committed instantly to memory as her sharp eyes scoured the dark underbrush. "Have mercy! My mother must be looking for me! I am lost!"
As soon as her gaze locked onto the hidden pit described by the distressed youngster, she hurried directly toward the edge of the embankment. Yet, with every step closer to the treacherous cavity, a foreign and unsettling aroma drifted up on the damp wind. It was completely devoid of the clean, snow white musk carried by ordinary wolves of her pack, nor did it hold the faint, humble scent of the omegas dwelling within their palace walls, and it bore no resemblance whatsoever to the proud metallic tang of the royal council lines.
"Help!"
Would Luna Solene extend her hand to save the child? Hesitation clawed at her conscience because she knew the truth. The young soul crying out from the depths was not her kind. The child pleading for salvation from the abyss did not belong to the White Wolves. A black wolf was trapped down in that dark prison, crying out for mercy from an ancient rival.
For a fraction of a second, she turned her gaze back toward her trail, then up to the heavens above. The sky had grown pitch black, swallowing the last bruised remnants of light while the torrential rain battered the foliage and rising floodwaters began to pool around the depression. She slowly returned her fierce gaze to the yawning hole in the earth.
"Forgive me, my kind. But I cannot endure the cry of an innocent child helpless against this natural phenomenon!" she said firmly, her voice ringing with resolute conviction before she immediately shifted her physical form into her magnificent wolf shape.
At the tips of every strand of Luna Solene's radiant fur glowed a brilliant golden light, interwoven seamlessly with streaks of vibrant sky blue that shimmered across her pelt like starlight, while her eyes burned with the mesmerizing intensity of blazing sapphire flames.
Without a moment of hesitation, Solene plunged headfirst into the dark, churning pit, using her powerful jaws to carefully grasp the boy. With a mighty heave of her muscular frame, she scrambled up the slick, muddy walls until they both broke free onto the solid safety of the upper ground. Once safe from the engulfing abyss, she looked down at the tiny face before her. Fear and profound gratitude warred within the pup's wide eyes. She allowed her body to ripple and shift back into her human form, standing tall against the wind.
"Do not be afraid of me, child. I will not hurt you," she said to the child, her voice dropping to a soothing, gentle register.
The boy retreated several paces into the brush, his small frame trembling. Yet Solene slowly followed him while extending her right palm outward, offering an open gesture to demonstrate her sincerity and assure him of her peaceful intentions.
"But you are not my kind," said the child, his voice shaking with suspicion. "I should not trust you!"
"You are not my kind either, child. But I chose to help you. I chose to be good rather than follow what is written in the scrolls of the White Wolves," she answered softly.
The boy took a long, shaky breath. He stopped backing away and instead took a hesitant step forward toward Luna Solene.
He reached out and placed his small hand directly into Solene's outstretched palm.
Together, they departed from the tangled, overgrown forest. Solene retrieved her woven basket filled with freshly gathered medicinal herbs from where she had dropped it earlier.
"Are you a doctor?" asked the boy, looking up at her with curiosity in his dark eyes.
"No, I am merely knowledgeable in healing, and perhaps it is the grace of the Moon Goddess why I have knowledge of medicinal herbs." She smiled warmly. "Sit down and I will treat your wound."
Solene squeezed the broad brown oregano leaves between her fingers, extracting the thick juices highly effective for treating bruises and abrasions. After pressing the soothing herbal paste gently onto the boy's scrapes, she offered him a reassuring smile.
"I will lead you to the exit," she declared.
Both shifted back into their wolf forms simultaneously, and Solene guided the way toward the border boundary while her loyal sentry guard kept watch over the young black wolf pup from the shadows. Upon reaching the threshold of their lands, they shifted back into their human forms once more.
"Be careful and do not ever return here to our land. You are fortunate that it was I who found you. We both know, child, that our races are enemies to one another," she explained, her tone carrying a stern warning.
The boy nodded slowly. He stepped forward and wrapped his small arms tightly around her waist in a sudden, heartfelt embrace. Solene bowed her head, wrapping her arms around the tiny, trembling body of the child to return the gesture.
"Thank you very much, my friend. I will not forget this day. Someday, I will be able to return your kindness. I am Malakor," said the boy, looking up with fierce loyalty shining in his gaze.
"I am Solene," she said softly. "Until we meet again, little black wolf," she whispered, bidding farewell to the child.
The boy transformed back into his sleek wolf form, pressing his furry head gently against Solene's knee one final time. Solene cupped the head of the black wolf affectionately before he turned toward the gateway and sprinted rapidly away into the distance.
Solene drew in a deep, stabilizing breath and rose to her feet. But as she turned around to begin her journey home, her blood ran cold at the sight blocking her path. Standing before her was one of the primary contenders vying for the coveted title of Luna beside Alpha Kyro.
"You are a traitor, Luna Solene!"
"Lu...Luchia?!" she stammered.
She never imagined that Luchia, who harbored a bottomless well of jealousy and wished only for her downfall, would witness this forbidden act.
What would happen now if this malicious rival reported her actions directly to Alpha Kyro and the entire ruling council?!
"Alpha Kyro and the entire council need to know about this!" Luchia shrieked.
Before Solene could muster a word of defense or stop her, Luchia shifted instantly into her wolf form and bolted at full speed, racing with ruthless determination straight toward the distant pack palace.
