Chapter 1: The Rejection
The Moon Goddess had blessed the night with silver light.
Laughter echoed through the pack house as warriors, elders, and families gathered to celebrate the annual Moon Festival. Music drifted through the air, and the scent of roasted meat filled every corner of the great hall.
For everyone else, it was a night of joy.
For Aria Blackwood, it was the night her life would be destroyed.
She stood near one of the tall windows, her hands trembling as she watched Alpha Damon Thorn enter the hall. The crowd parted instantly, their eyes filled with admiration and respect.
He was everything a future Alpha should be—strong, handsome, and feared throughout the werewolf realm.
And he was her mate.
The moment the Moon Goddess had revealed their bond a year ago, Aria had believed her future was secure. She had dreamed of standing beside Damon as his Luna, helping him lead the pack and build a family together.
But lately, something had changed.
Damon barely looked at her anymore.
Instead, his attention followed another woman.
Selena Rivers.
The daughter of a powerful Beta family.
Beautiful. Popular. Perfect.
Aria's stomach twisted as Selena walked directly toward Damon and slipped her arm through his.
A murmur spread through the crowd.
Aria's wolf whimpered painfully inside her.
"No..." she whispered.
Damon climbed onto the platform at the center of the hall.
The room fell silent.
"I have an announcement," he said.
His deep voice echoed across the chamber.
Aria's heart raced.
Maybe he was finally going to introduce her as his Luna.
Maybe all her fears had been wrong.
For a brief moment, hope filled her chest.
Then Damon smiled and pulled Selena closer.
"Tonight, I proudly present the future Luna of the Shadow Fang Pack."
The world stopped.
"Selena Rivers."
Cheers exploded throughout the hall.
Aria couldn't breathe.
Her ears rang.
Her vision blurred.
Every face in the crowd turned toward her.
Some looked shocked.
Others looked amused.
Several simply looked away.
As though she no longer mattered.
"Damon..." Aria whispered.
The Alpha's eyes finally met hers.
Cold.
Distant.
Unrecognizable.
"The Moon Goddess made a mistake," he said.
The words struck harder than any physical blow.
"My wolf does not accept you."
A collective gasp filled the room.
Aria's knees nearly gave out.
"You are weak," Damon continued. "A Luna must inspire strength. She must command respect."
His gaze shifted toward Selena.
"Selena possesses those qualities."
Tears burned Aria's eyes.
The mate bond screamed in agony.
Every heartbeat felt like a knife slicing through her chest.
"I loved you," she whispered.
Damon looked away.
As though her pain meant nothing.
As though she meant nothing.
At that moment, Aria realized the truth.
The man she had loved never truly existed.
The hall erupted into celebration.
But Aria heard none of it.
Because deep within her, something was breaking.
And something else was awakening.
A secret.
A power.
A destiny hidden since the day she was born.
Far beyond the borders of Shadow Fang territory, in a kingdom forgotten by most of the werewolf world, a pair of golden eyes suddenly opened.
Ancient.
Powerful.
Dangerous.
The Lycan King had felt it.
For the first time in centuries, his heartbeat quickened.
His wolf growled one word.
"Mine."
And fate began to move.
