The War Arrives
The heavy scent of smoke hung in the air as Queen Evelyne Laurent stood at the palace window, watching the distant glow of fires on the horizon. Brussels had fallen. German forces had crossed the borders, sweeping through Belgium like an unstoppable storm. The royal guards whispered of surrender, of exile. But Evelyne refused.
"Your Majesty, we must leave at once," urged Duke Henri Valmont, one of her advisors. "The Germans will be here by dawn. If they capture you—"
She turned sharply. "And what of my people? Should I abandon them to war while I escape to safety?"
The room fell silent. The king—her husband, Adrien Beaumont—had already left for London, tasked with rallying support from Britain. Belgium was on its knees, its soldiers scattered, its streets trembling under the weight of German boots.
But Evelyne was still here.
She cast off her regal cloak and took a deep breath. If she could not rule her people from a palace, she would serve them from the battlefield.
The Hospital at Saint-Michel
By morning, the German army had occupied the city. But instead of waiting in gilded halls for her fate to be decided, Evelyne had already disappeared—hidden beneath the white apron of a nurse in Saint-Michel Hospital.
The air inside was thick with the smell of blood and disinfectant. Nurses moved between rows of cots, tending to soldiers with gunshot wounds and civilians caught in the crossfire. Evelyne worked tirelessly, her hands wrapped in bandages instead of silk gloves.
"Your Highness, you don’t have to do this," whispered Margot Duvall, one of the head nurses and a trusted confidante.
Evelyne pressed a damp cloth to the forehead of a feverish soldier. "If I do nothing, I am no queen at all."
Margot hesitated, then nodded. "Then there’s something you should know. The resistance is still alive, and they need your help."
A flicker of hope ignited in Evelyne’s chest. Belgium had not fallen completely.
But across the city, General Reinhardt Falken, the man now commanding Brussels under German rule, had issued an order: Find the missing queen. And if she resists—execute her.
