Chapter 3: Leaving Home

2822 Words
Isabel couldn't believe it was finally happening. She had money, she filled out the paperwork, and now she was on her way to Padua, Italy to start a year-long program at the university. She had always dreamed of traveling, of seeing the world outside of Tecumseh, but now that the moment had arrived, she was filled with fear and uncertainty. The morning of her departure, Jenna Isabel's roommate was still sleeping when she quietly gathered her bags and headed out the door. She didn't want to wake her, but she couldn't leave without saying goodbye to Jenna, her closest and, if she was being honest, her only friend. Isabel tiptoed through the room, trying to avoid waking Jenna, but her movements caught the attention of her friend, who jolted awake with a start. "Isabel, what the hell?" Jenna rubbed her bleary eyes, glancing at the clock. "It's 5 a.m.! Are you crazy? You're going to miss your flight!" Isabel couldn't help but smile at Jenna's reaction. She had always been the more anxious of the two, while Isabel tended to be more laid-back. "Relax, Jenna, my flight's not until 9 a.m. I just wanted to say goodbye before I left." Jenna sat up in bed, her eyes wide with panic. "Oh my god, I thought you were leaving right now. You scared the crap out of me." Isabel laughed, feeling a surge of affection for her friend. "I'm sorry. I'll try to be more considerate next time I sneak out of here." Jenna let out a deep breath, her expression softening. "I'm going to miss you, you know. Who am I going to complain about our awful landlord with?" Isabel hugged her friend tightly. "Don't worry, I'll still be texting you every day. And besides, I'll be too busy living my best Italian life to think about our crappy apartment." Jenna chuckled, wiping away a tear. "I hope so. Just promise me one thing, okay?" "Anything." "Don't forget about me. I know you're going to make all sorts of amazing new friends and have a million adventures, but promise me you'll still remember the girl who shared a tiny apartment with you in Tecumseh." Isabel squeezed her friend's hand. "I could never forget you, Jenna. You're the reason I'm even on this adventure in the first place. And I promise, I'll keep you updated on everything." The girls quickly got ready and made sure they had gotten everything Isabel would need while travelling. Isabel couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the depth of her emotions as she hugged Jenna goodbye at the airport. Jenna had been her rock, her confidant, her lifeline, for the past several months. When Isabel's grandmother passed away, she felt completely alone in the world, until Jenna entered her life. It was Jenna's patience and unwavering kindness that drew Isabel to her. Even when Isabel was being unreasonable or shutting herself away for days on end, Jenna never gave up on her. Isabel vividly remembered a moment when she was having one of her depression episodes and had locked herself in her room for three days straight. She didn't want to see or talk to anyone, not even Jenna. But to Isabel's surprise, Jenna stormed into her room with chocolate, popcorn, soda, and a laptop loaded with comedy movies. At first, Isabel didn't want to watch anything or even eat, but Jenna's gentle coaxing and care eventually broke through Isabel's wall of sadness. As they watched comedy after comedy, Isabel began to laugh and feel better. She remembered feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude for Jenna's presence in her life, and the realization that Jenna was more than just a friend to her. As they hugged at the airport, Isabel felt tears prick at her eyes. She knew that Jenna would always hold a special place in her heart, even as she embarked on a new journey to Italy. She promised Jenna that she would stay in touch, that they would talk often, and that their friendship would endure the distance. "I'm so proud of you," Jenna said, trying to smile through her tears. "This is what you've always wanted, right?" Isabel nodded, feeling the weight of the moment heavy on her chest. "Yeah, I just wish my family cared enough to come say goodbye." Jenna hugged her again, and they held each other for a long moment before finally pulling away. Isabel took a deep breath and headed towards security, looking back at Jenna one last time before disappearing into the crowd. As she turned to leave, Isabel couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness in her chest. She was leaving behind the only person who truly understood her, and she wasn't sure how she would cope without Jenna by her side. The journey to Padua was long and tiring. Isabel had multiple layovers, and each one felt like a lifetime. She barely slept on the plane, too anxious and excited to close her eyes. By the time she finally arrived in Padua, she was exhausted and disoriented. She struggled to communicate with the taxi driver, who spoke no English, and had to rely on a translator app to get to her student accommodation, which was for sure a very painful experience. The room was small and bare, but Isabel didn't care. She was just happy to finally be in Italy. Isabel took a deep breath and tried to steady her racing heart. She had dreamed of this moment for so long, of being in a new country and experiencing a different way of life. She had thought this was her chance to finally break out of her shell, to be someone different, someone happy. But now, as she stood in the midst of a culture she knew nothing about, she realized just how overwhelming it all was. Every sight, sound, and smell seemed foreign to her. The language, once so romantic and beautiful, now sounded harsh and impossible. She was alone in a sea of people, and it was suffocating. The first few days were a blur of jetlag and culture shock. Isabel wandered the streets, trying to take in everything around her. The buildings were so old and beautiful, the people so friendly and passionate. But soon enough, reality set in. Classes started, and Isabel realized just how difficult it was going to be to keep up. She was the only international student in her program, and everyone else spoke Italian fluently. She struggled to keep up in class, and outside of the lectures, the language barrier made it hard for her to connect with anyone. Isabel's initial excitement was quickly replaced by a sense of loneliness and isolation. She felt as if she was back on stage zero once again. She missed her daddy and friends, the familiar sights and sounds of home. She missed Jenna, the one person who had been there for her. But now, she was alone in a foreign country, struggling to understand a language she had never even heard before. She felt like a burden on her classmates and professors, always asking for help and clarification. She was beginning to doubt whether she had made the right decision to come here. Yet, despite all of this, Isabel refused to give up. She was determined to make the most of her experience, to learn the language and make new friends. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she was willing to work hard and push through the challenges. She reminded herself that this was her chance to grow, to become someone she had always wanted to be. And with that thought in mind, she took a deep breath and stepped forward into the unknown. As Isabel walked into the university cafeteria, she couldn't help but feel intimidated by the unfamiliar surroundings. She carefully scanned the room, trying to take it all in, when she suddenly heard the sound of English. Her heart skipped a beat. It was such a familiar sound in an unfamiliar place. She turned around to see two guys, one blond with blue eyes, the other tall with strikingly beautiful gray eyes and dark hair. Isabel was taken aback by their physical appearance. Marco was obviously handsome, with a muscular build and a charming Italian accent. But Lorenzo was pure perfection, tall, with striking features and an air of mystery about him that Isabel couldn't quite put her finger on. She noticed that while Marco had a thick Italian accent, Lorenzo spoke perfect Italian but with a slight American accent. After a few minutes of mustering up her courage, Isabel walked over to the guys and introduced herself. "Hi, I couldn't help but overhear you speaking English. I'm Isabel, and I'm new here," she said, shyly. Marco and Lorenzo introduced themselves in turn, and they spent the next hour chatting about everything from their studies to their favorite Italian foods. Weeks passed, and Isabel continued to struggle with the language barrier and the cultural differences. One day, as she was walking home from class, she saw Marco approaching from the opposite direction. They exchanged friendly greetings and chatted briefly about their classes. As they continued to talk, Marco suddenly stopped and looked at Isabel. "Wait a minute, what classes are you taking this semester?" he asked. Isabel listed off her courses, and to her surprise, Marco realized they had a couple of classes together. "No way! We have those classes together too!" he exclaimed. Isabel couldn't believe it. She had been struggling so much in class, and now she had a friend to sit with and study with. "That's amazing," she said, smiling. Marco grinned back at her. "Yeah, we can totally help each other out. And who knows, maybe we'll even ace the exams together." Isabel felt a warmth in her chest at the thought of having a study buddy. "Thank you so much, Marco. I really appreciate it," she said. He waved it off. "No problem. We're friends now, right? That's what friends are for." Isabel nodded, feeling grateful for the kindness Marco and Lorenzo had shown her. "Speaking of Lorenzo, you mentioned he's your roommate, right?" Marco nodded. "Yeah, he is. But he's not in any of our science classes, he studies business." Isabel smiled. "It's nice to have roommates who have similar interests, right?" Marco chuckled. "Actually, we have completely different interests. But he's a great guy, so it works out." Isabel nodded, feeling relieved to know that Lorenzo wouldn't be in the same classes as them. She would not have been able to focus on her studies if she had all of ''that'' beside her to keep her distracted? Jokes aside, she was excited to have Marco as her study partner, and she couldn't wait to see where their newfound friendship would take them. As they parted ways, Isabel couldn't help but feel grateful for their friendship. Despite all the challenges she had faced, she had found two people who made her feel welcome in this new and foreign place. As weeks passed, Isabel started to feel a bit better. She still struggled with the language barrier, but Marco was a huge help with her classes. Lorenzo often hung out with them too, and his humor always managed to lift their spirits. Isabel couldn't help but feel grateful for their friendship. She had never thought she would find people that she would connect with in a foreign place. One day, as they were studying together in the cafeteria, Lorenzo suddenly said, "Enough is enough, guys! We've been cooped up in here for too long. Let's do something fun." Isabel looked up from her textbook, surprised. "Like what?" Lorenzo grinned mischievously. "There's a free concert in the piazza tonight. We should go check it out." Marco looked hesitant, "I don't know, Lorenzo. We have a test tomorrow, and we haven't studied enough." Lorenzo rolled his eyes. "Come on, Marco, you always worry too much. We need to have some fun too." Isabel smiled, feeling torn. She knew they needed to study, but the idea of going to a concert sounded like a lot of fun. Lorenzo sensed her hesitation and turned to her. "Isabel, what do you say? Are you in?" Isabel thought about it for a moment before nodding. "Okay, let's do it." Marco sighed, but eventually gave in. "Fine, let's go." "Great, it's settled then," Lorenzo said, grinning. "We'll meet at the piazza at 7 tonight. Don't be late!" As they parted ways, Isabel couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. She was looking forward to getting out of her apartment and experiencing something new. Marco seemed to sense her enthusiasm, and he smiled at her. "Looks like we have plans tonight," he said. "Yeah, I'm actually really excited," Isabel replied. "I can tell," Marco said, chuckling. "It's good to see you like this. I know you've been struggling a bit, but you're doing great." Isabel felt a warmth spread through her chest at Marco's words. She was grateful for his support and friendship. She knew she still had a long way to go in terms of adjusting to life in Italy, but having Marco and Lorenzo by her side made it all feel a little bit easier. As they settled back into studying, Isabel couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude. She had found two people who had helped make this new place feel like home, and for that, she was truly thankful. As Isabel, Marco, and Lorenzo walked towards the piazza, the sound of music filled the air, and they could see a sea of people gathered around the stage. The sun was setting, casting a warm golden light over the piazza, and a cool breeze carried the scent of fresh gelato and pizza. As they made their way through the crowd, Isabel felt a sense of excitement and anticipation building inside her. She had never experienced anything like this before. The joyful energy of the crowd, the vibrant music, and the beautiful setting all combined to create a magical atmosphere. They found a spot near the stage and settled in, enjoying the music and the company of one another. The indie bands playing were a perfect match for the summer night, their upbeat melodies and catchy tunes filling the piazza with an infectious energy. The crowd swayed and danced to the music, and Isabel found herself caught up in the moment, moving to the rhythm and singing along to the lyrics she didn't even understand. As the night went on, the stars began to twinkle in the sky, and the piazza became even more alive with the music and the people. Marco and Lorenzo were having a great time, and Isabel was grateful to be sharing this experience with them. As the last band finished their set, the crowd erupted into applause and cheers, and Isabel felt a sense of sadness that it was all over. Deep down she knew that she would always cherish this memory, the memory of her first Italian summer concert, spent with new friends and great music. As Isabel was preparing to leave the piazza after the concert, Lorenzo surprised her by offering to walk her home. Marco, who had decided to prioritize sleep for his upcoming exam, agreed to the plan after confirming with Isabel that she felt comfortable with it. Isabel couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement at the thought of being alone with Lorenzo for the first time. She had never felt this way about someone before, and the idea of spending more time with him made her heart race with anticipation. Isabel found herself drawn to Lorenzo's personality, even though it was so different from her own. He was outgoing, confident, and always seemed to know the right thing to say. Isabel, on the other hand, was reserved, anxious, and often found herself tongue-tied in social situations. But there was something about Lorenzo that just clicked with Isabel. He had an infectious energy that drew people to him, and she found herself caught up in it whenever they were together. His sense of humor was sharp and irreverent, and he always had a mischievous glint in his eye that made Isabel feel both excited and a little bit intimidated. Lorenzo was also incredibly charismatic. People gravitated towards him naturally, and Isabel often found herself in awe of his ability to make friends and connections wherever he went. She admired the way he navigated social situations with ease, and how he always seemed to know the right thing to say to make people feel at ease. Despite their differences, Isabel found herself inexorably attracted to Lorenzo. She felt drawn to his energy and his confidence, and found herself craving more time with him. She couldn't quite explain it, but being around him made her feel alive in a way that she had never felt before.
