Isabel spent the next few weeks consumed with her studies, trying to stay focused on her goal of becoming a doctor. However, she still felt a sense of loneliness and detachment from her family. Despite Jenna's attempts to encourage her to reach out to her family, Isabel couldn't shake off the feeling of being an outsider in her own family.
As time passed, Isabel's insecurities continued to grow. She became increasingly harsh with herself, constantly criticizing her own actions and appearance. Her self-esteem issues had taken a toll on her mental health, causing her to suffer from multiple depressive episodes. She had become so consumed by her own negative thoughts that she found it difficult to trust others and open up to them.
One day, as Isabel sat alone in her dorm room, she couldn't shake off the feeling of sadness and hopelessness that had engulfed her. She sat staring at the blank page of her journal, unsure of what to write.
Jenna's words echoed in her mind. "You need to talk to them and try to work things out. You can't just give up on them." Isabel knew that Jenna was right, but the thought of confronting her family made her feel vulnerable and exposed.
As she sat there, lost in thought, a knock on the door startled her. She got up to answer it, and was surprised to see Jenna standing outside.
"Hey, I was in the area and thought I'd drop by. Are you okay?" Jenna asked, sensing that something was wrong.
Isabel hesitated for a moment, unsure of whether or not to confide in her friend. She decided to take a chance and opened up to Jenna about her struggles with insecurity and self-doubt.
"I just feel so alone, like no one understands me," Isabel said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jenna listened patiently as Isabel poured out her heart. She reminded Isabel that she was not alone and that there were people who cared about her.
"You don't have to face this alone, Isabel. We're here for you," Jenna said, placing a comforting hand on Isabel's shoulder.
Isabel felt a wave of gratitude wash over her. She had never realized how much she needed someone to talk to until now.
"I don't know what I'd do without you," Isabel said, tears welling up in her eyes.
Jenna smiled. "You don't have to worry about that. I'm not going anywhere."
The two girls talked for hours, discussing everything from their dreams and aspirations to their deepest fears and insecurities. Isabel felt a weight lifted off her shoulders, knowing that she had someone she could trust and confide in.
As the night wore on, Jenna suggested they take a walk around campus to clear their heads. Isabel hesitated for a moment, but then decided to take a chance and join her friend.
As they walked, Isabel felt the cool night air on her face and the comforting presence of her friend beside her. She couldn't remember the last time she had felt so at peace.
"I'm so glad we did this," Isabel said, breaking the silence.
"Me too," Jenna replied. "Sometimes it's good to just take a break from everything and be present in the moment."
As they continued their walk, Isabel felt a newfound sense of confidence growing within her. She knew that she still had a long way to go, but she was determined to work on her insecurities and trust issues.
The next day, Isabel made a decision. She was going to reach out to her family and try to mend their relationship. She knew that it wouldn't be easy, but she was willing to take the risk and at least try.
She called her dad and arranged to meet him for lunch the following week. As she hung up the phone, she felt a surge of nervousness.
Isabel was excited about having lunch with her daddy. She hoped that this time he would finally pay attention to her and show some interest in her life. As she arrived at the restaurant, her father was already seated and on his phone.
"Hey daddy," Isabel said, as she took a seat across from him. "How are you?"
"Good, good," her father responded, without even looking up from his phone. "How's school?"
"It's going well," Isabel answered. "I'm taking some interesting classes this semester. I'm really enjoying my psychology class."
"That's great," her father said, still not looking up. "Have you decided on what you're going to do after you graduate?"
Isabel sighed inwardly. Her father always seemed more interested in her future plans than her present life. "I'm still figuring it out," she said. "But I'm considering going to graduate school for psychology."
"That's a good idea," her father said absentmindedly. "You'll make good money as a psychologist."
Isabel tried to keep the conversation going, but her father kept checking his phone and giving one-word answers. She felt invisible and unimportant, just like always. She knew that her father loved her, but he didn't seem to know how to show it.
As they finished their meal, Isabel felt a deep sadness creeping in. She had always struggled with insecurity and trust issues, and this lunch with her father was only making it worse. She didn't trust anyone to be there for her, and she was harsh with others because of it.
Growing up, Isabel had turned to drugs, alcohol, and partying to fill the emptiness in her life, but it only made her feel worse. She struggled with body image issues, always feeling like she wasn't good enough or pretty enough. She had suffered from multiple depression episodes but had never shared it with anyone.
Her family never acknowledged her mental health issues, always dismissing her as an attention seeker. It was a lonely existence, feeling like no one cared about her true feelings.
As they left the restaurant, her father hugged her briefly and said, "Let's do this again sometime." Isabel knew that he probably didn't mean it, but she still held on to the hope that one day he would truly see her and care about her.
As Isabel continued with her daily routine of attending college classes, working part-time at a campus cafe, she couldn't shake off the feeling of being stuck in a rut. She'd tried everything to feel something, anything, but nothing seemed to work.
One day, while scrolling through the college notice board, she comes across a pamphlet about an undergraduate year abroad program in Europe, specifically in Padua, Italy. The pamphlet shows pictures of students studying, sightseeing, and having fun in a foreign land. Isabel is immediately intrigued, and her heart races with excitement at the thought of embarking on an adventure and experiencing something new.
After thinking about all the possibilities, Isabel reached the conclusion that this is exactly what she needed, a new place where she could be whomever she wished and no one would think she was the lonely girl. She decided to talk to her stepmother about it. As the only female role model in the family, she truly valued her opinion and thought that this could be yet another attempt at a possible relationship between the two of them.
Isabel sat down at the kitchen table in her dad's house, her heart racing as she waited for her stepmother to come in. She knew this conversation was going to be tough, but she was determined to stand her ground.
Barbara walked in; her arms crossed over her chest. She raised an eyebrow when she saw Isabel sitting there.
"What do you want, Isabel?" she asked, her tone sharp.
Isabel took a deep breath. "I wanted to talk to you about something. I've been thinking about it for some time now, and I think it's time to make a change in my life."
Barbara rolled her eyes. "What is it now, Isabel? Another one of your hair-brained schemes?"
Isabel winced at the insult, but pushed on. "I found this program at school - it's a year abroad in Italy. I've always wanted to travel, and I think this would be an amazing opportunity for me."
Barbara scoffed. "And who's going to pay for this little adventure of yours? Your father? We have two small children to take care of, Isabel. We can't just throw money around and pay for all your whims."
Isabel felt her heart sink. She had hoped that her stepmother would be supportive, or at least neutral, but it seemed that was not the case.
"I understand that, Barbara," Isabel said, trying to keep her voice steady. "That's why I've been working so hard at the cafe. I've saved up a good amount of money already, and I plan on getting a job in Italy as well."
Barbara snorted. "A job in Italy? Doing what? Waiting tables? You don't even speak Italian, Isabel. This is a ridiculous idea, and your father will never go for it."
Isabel felt her anger start to rise. Why did Barbara always have to be so negative? She was determined not to let her stepmother get the best of her.
"I don't need my father's permission, Barbara," Isabel said firmly. "I'm an adult, and I can make my own decisions. I've been working hard at everything I do. I think I deserve to be happy about something for a change and I'm going to do it, with or without your support."
Barbara's eyes narrowed. "Well, don't come crying to us when you run out of money and can't get a job, Isabel. You need to grow the f**k up and start taking responsibility for your own life."
Isabel stood up, feeling a mix of anger and sadness. She knew that her stepmother was never going to support her, but she had hoped for at least a little understanding. If anything, she hoped her stepmother would be relieved to get rid of her for one year, but she could not get past the fact that Isabel wanted to do something for herself and step out of the shadows for once.
"I will take responsibility for my life, Barbara," Isabel said, her voice shaking. "And that's why I'm doing this. I need to break away from this life that I'm so unhappy in. I need to find myself, and this is the only way I know how."
With that, Isabel walked out of the kitchen, her heart heavy with disappointment. She knew that this was going to be a long and difficult road, but she was determined to make it work.
Later that week Isabel mustered up the courage to talk to her dad about her plans to go to Italy. She hoped that even with her stepmother being opposed to the idea, her daddy would at least hear her and consider the idea, but deep down, she knew that it was a long shot.
"Dad, I need to talk to you about something important," Isabel said as she sat down across from him.
"Sure, what's on your mind?" he replied, looking up from his newspaper.
"I want to go to Italy for a year. There's a program at school that I can participate in, and I think it would be a great opportunity for me," Isabel said, trying to sound confident.
Her dad looked at her skeptically. "Italy? Why on earth would you want to go there? What about your studies here? And what about your family? Don't you think they need you?"
"I've been doing well in school, and I'll be able to continue my studies while I'm there. And as for the family, I'll be back in a year. Besides, I need this for myself. I need to see the world and experience new things."
Her dad sighed. "Isabel, you know that your stepmom and I have our hands full with your siblings. We can't just drop everything and send you off to Europe for a year."
"I'm not asking you to pay for it, Dad. I'm just asking for your support," Isabel replied, feeling frustrated.
"I understand that, but your stepmom has a point. You need to focus on your studies and your family. Maybe next year, when things settle down, we can talk about it again," her dad said, trying to placate her.
Isabel's heart sank. She knew that her dad was just agreeing with her stepmom for the sake of keeping the peace. She felt like her dreams didn't matter and that her family would always come first, no matter what.
"Okay, Dad. I understand," Isabel said, trying to keep the disappointment out of her voice.
"I'm glad you do. And Isabel, please don't bring this up again. We have enough going on as it is," her dad said, returning his attention to the newspaper.
Isabel got up from her seat and left the room, feeling defeated. She had hoped for a different outcome, but deep down, she knew that her dad's priorities would always lie with his other children.
Isabel feels crushed by her family's lack of support and understanding. She's never felt like she belonged in her family and has always been the black sheep. But this time, she thought she had found something that would make her happy, something that would give her a purpose. And yet, her family didn't seem to care.
Despite their opposition, Isabel remained determined. She's never been so sure of anything in her life. She wanted this adventure, this chance to explore a new place, learn a new language, and meet new people. She worked even harder at her campus job, doing double shifts and covering for colleagues when needed, saving every penny she could, and began to fill out the application for the program in Italy.
What her family did not know was that Ruth Isabel's grandmother had left some money for her. As part of many quirks, Ruth did not believe in banks and had a safe in her house that only Isabel knew the code for. Isabel did not know what to expect when she actually opened the safe, but definitely it wasn't a note or a lot of cash.
As Isabel remembered that day she reached for the note left by her grandmother Ruth, tears welled up in her eyes. The note read:
"My dearest Isabel, if you are reading this, then I am no longer with you. I hope this note finds you well and happy. I want you to know that money can not buy happiness, but it can bring you new experiences. It can open up new doors and lead you to new beginnings. Life is a precious gift, my child, and it's up to you to make the most of it. Don't be afraid to take risks and chase after your own happiness. I may not be with you in body, but I will always be with you in spirit. Love, Ruth."
Isabel clutched the note to her chest, feeling the weight of her grandmother's words. It was as if Ruth was speaking to her from beyond the grave, urging her to live life to the fullest. Isabel wiped away her tears, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. She would honor her grandmother's memory by seizing every opportunity that came her way and making the most of her life. At that moment Isabel felt as if her grandmother knew she would need to be reminded that only herself could reach for her own happiness.
But even as she takes these many steps towards her dream, doubts begin to creep in. What if she's not good enough for the program? What if she can't handle being away from her family for a whole year? What if she's just fooling herself into thinking that this adventure will bring her happiness?
Isabel started to second-guess herself, her insecurities and self-doubts taking over. But with Jenna's encouragement, she sends in her application for the program in Italy and anxiously awaits the result, hopeful for the best. Finally, after weeks of waiting, she gets the email she's been waiting for: she's been accepted into the program in Italy.
As Isabel reads the email, her heart thumps in her chest with an intensity she's never felt before. Excitement and joy course through her veins, and tears of happiness prick at her eyes. For once in her life, she feels proud of herself and hopeful for her future. But then, as she basks in this moment, a wave of melancholy washes over her. She knows that this newfound happiness comes with a cost - she'll have to leave everything she's ever known behind. It's a bittersweet feeling, one that she can't quite shake. But she's determined to chase after her dreams, even if it means leaving behind the safety and comfort of her old life.
