Chapter Five
Logan’s Pov
Mia’s eyes widened as they locked with mine, her body trembling in my arms. Her pulse was racing, and I could feel her fear washing over me like a wave. Something had terrified her—something beyond the usual dangers she might have imagined in this cursed forest.
“Mia, what are you doing out here?” I asked, my voice low but urgent.
“I… I thought I saw something,” she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper. “It had eyes, glowing in the dark. I followed it, but then it disappeared… and the next thing I knew, I was lost. And then, I heard something stalking me. It was close, Logan. I could hear it breathing.”
I scanned the area, trying to sense any danger. The faint heartbeat I had detected earlier was still there, lurking just around the corner, I tried to sniff it out, think I could get a scent of the creature but it has none. I brought my focus back on Mia, she needed to be safe, and there was no telling what kind of creature Kane had unleashed into the world.
“We need to get you out of here,” I said, my grip tightening on her arm as I pulled her closer to me. “Whatever it is , it’s not safe to stay.”
Mia nodded, though her eyes still looked around the shadowy trees and bushes as she was expecting the creature to leap out at any moment. She stayed close to me as we began to make our way back to the town, her hand gripping mine tightly.
As we were about to reach the edge of the forest, a chilling sound echoed behind us—a low growl, deep and menacing. I turned my head sharply, my instincts flaring.
It was right behind us. I need to get Mia to safety.
“Mia, run,” I commanded, pushing her ahead of me.
“But—”
“Go!” I barked, and for once, she didn’t argue. She turned and sprinted toward the safety of the streetlights in the distance.
I stood my ground, eyes locked on the treeline. Whatever was out there was toying with us. Midnight was itching to come out, to tear apart whatever threat lingered, but I had to stay calm. If I shifted here and now, Mia would see me—and everything I had kept hidden would be revealed. I couldn’t let that happen. Not yet.
The growl came again, this time closer. I caught a glimpse of glowing eyes from within the trees. The creature stepped out from the shadows—a hulk like figure, larger than any werewolf I’d ever seen. It had the build of one of our kind but its features were twisted. Its eyes as red as blood, and its fangs dripped with a strange, dark liquid.
This was Kane’s creation. The abomination he had told me about.
My stomach twisted in disgust and rage. How could the Alpha have let this thing loose?
I looked back and wasn’t seeing Mia in sight, don’t know if she was hiding around or she has succeeded in reaching the car.
I heard the growl and turned back to the monster “Now let’s deal with you!” I growled back at it, but it only bared its teeth, taking a step forward.
I could feel the surge of power within me, Midnight fighting to break free. The creature tilted its head, watching me curiously, like it could feel the power I possessed or as if it recognized me. But I can’t afford to lose control here. Not in front of Mia, who could be anywhere nearby, watching.
The creature let out a howl, and in that moment, I knew I had no choice. Midnight roared within me, demanding to protect what was ours. My muscles tensed, and I started to shift, my bones cracking and realigning painfully as my wolf began to take over.
But just as my transformation was about to complete, a sharp scream rang out through the night.
“Mia!”
I turned toward the sound, fear slicing through me like a knife. The creature, sensing my distraction, took a dive at me. I barely had time to react, as I pushed it away with all my strength. It staggered back, growling, but I didn’t give it a chance to recover. I began to run towards Mia’s scream, tearing through the trees like a force of nature.
When I found her, she had her back against a tree, as terror was written all over her face. She wasn’t alone. Another figure loomed over her—a man, or at least what was left of him. His eyes looked wild, his skin pale, as if something had drained the life from him. A vampire, but one that had been twisted, corrupted.
“Mia!” I called out, rushing forward. I got to her as I stood in front of her protectively, I looked at her and I could see her crying.
“Mia, I want you to do something” I told her
“Now is not the time for request Logan” she replied
“Yeah, I know but I need you to close your eyes!” I said to her as I could suddenly here her an heartbeat getting closer.
“What!?”
“Just do it!” I said to her and she closed it “don’t open it till I say so, okay” she nodded in response.
Just then the vampire rushed towards me, hissing, its sharp claws raised. I wasn’t hesitating to reap me to shreds . Midnight surge forward immediately to counter it attack, as I leapt at the creature, tackling it to the ground. We rolled through the dirt, teeth and claws clashing in a brutal struggle.
Mia’s scream brought me back to reality as she could here the sounds coming from the fight. I couldn’t let her see this side of me—not yet. I forced myself to regain control, beating back the animalistic urge to tear the creature apart. With one final blow, I sent the vampire flying into a tree, its body collapsing in a broken heap.
Breathing hard, I turned back to Mia, who was now trembling uncontrollably.
“Mia, we need to go now!” I reached towards her. She opened her eyes, it was filled with fear.
“Logan… what—what was that? How did you get rid of it” she whispered, her voice shaky.
“I didn’t” But before I could complete my statement, another growl echoed from the woods, and the twisted creature from earlier reappeared.
“Mia, we need to go. Now,” I urged, grabbing her hand once more.
But as we ran, I knew this was far from over. The danger was closing in, and Mia was on the verge of uncovering the truth—a truth that could change everything.
