The Unseen Threat

Chapter 2 I helped Logan to his feet, my gun still at the ready. His face was pale, but he nodded reassuringly. "I'm fine," he said, wincing in pain. "What was that thing?" I shook my head. "I don't know, but we need to get out of here." We retreated to the car, our senses on high alert. The fog swirled around us, making it difficult to see more than a few feet ahead. As we drove back to town, Logan's silence worried me. His eyes were fixed on the rearview mirror, his expression grim. "What's bothering you?" I asked. Logan hesitated. "That thing... it didn't feel human." I frowned. "What do you mean?" "It was too fast, too strong. And its movements... unnatural." I didn't argue. I'd seen some strange things in my years as a detective, but this was different. Back at the station, I filed a report, leaving out the more bizarre details. No point in fueling the town's paranoia. Logan leaned against the desk, his eyes never leaving mine. “Mia, I think we're dealing with something beyond our understanding." I sighed. "Let's focus on facts, Logan. We'll find a logical explanation." But as I looked into his eyes, I saw a glimmer of doubt. And I wondered if I was wrong. Later that night, I received a call from an unknown number. "Mia," a low voice whispered, "you're getting close." "Who is this?" I demanded. The line went dead. My heart racing, I stared at the phone. Who was playing games with me? And what did they mean by "getting close"? The darkness outside seemed to press in, and for the first time, I felt a shiver of fear. Back home I sat on the table, the scene at the old gym keeps playing in my head. What was that? How did it have that speed or strength? I tried calling the number that called me but it wasn’t available. Was what Logan said true? Is it supernatural? No it can’t be. There would be a logical explanation about this and I haven’t seen it yet. I should get some sleep, maybe my head will be clearer by morning. Logan’s pov I watched as Mai’s room light turned off. I had watched over her for the past month. My phone buzzed, I picked it up and a voice boomed out of the phone “Meeting ground, now!” The voice said. I ended the call, looked over at Mia’s house before turning to leave. I transformed, letting my wolf take over. Midnight took over, my eyes dark as night and my fur as his name implies. This is the one secret I had to hide from Mai. Midnight ran through the night as fast as light. I got to the meeting ground in no time. Three figures stood in the dark, I could see them with my werewolf vision but a normal human won’t be able to see them. I went behind a tree and transformed back, letting myself gain some control but my eyes and ears were still controlled by midnight. I stood before the Alpha and his beta with someone who covered his identity with a hood. I bowed to show my respect, “your lordship!” “Logan” his voice deep, not having an effect on me like it would to the other wolves but I pretended it was the reason best known to me. “You were told to follow the human girl, report her activities and disrupt her investigation, is that not right?“ Alpha Kane asked “Yes my lord. I was …” I was about to explain myself but was cut off. “My sources told me you were at the old gym a few minutes ago. Were you not supposed to lead her off the trail?” He asked with authority “I should have but what attacked us was not a werewolf, it was something else” I informed “I don’t care which supernatural creature attacked you. Your job is to make sure her investigation does not point back to the supernatural realm, which would risk us getting exposed” The Alpha speaks “I understand, your lordship but if you would listen to what I’m trying to tell you.” I tried to explain what I observed with my wolf sense “That’s enough! Any further mishap would get you off the mission. The war between the supernaturals is huge and if we don’t prepare for it, it would mean the death of every were kind. You are dismissed” I breathed out my frustrations, rose to my feet and began walking out. Kane’s voice stopped me, “keep her distracted or get cut off from the mission” I paused and walked away without any word to them. Midnight took control and ran deep into the forest, back to Mia's house. It lay on the roof facing her house, watching over her. Midnight has always been attracted to her but I did know why. I could not feel any mate bond, so I assumed that it made infatuation. I took control and sat on the roof. Whatever or whoever it was back at the old gym, was not a werewolf. I felt it’s strength when it hit me and before I could react it was gone. “What was that? Is the prophecy by oracle true? Would there be creatures more stronger and faster then the were kind? Would I be able to protect Mai from this life while still keeping my secret?” I asked myself these questions over and over again, with no answer. I was determined to stop whatever it was or who it was that was threatening the balance of the supernatural world, no matter the cost. Just then I felt a presence behind me, it was not a werewolf and with the faint heartbeat, I could already know what creature it was. “You don’t sneak up on people like that, cold blooded killer” I spoke out without turning my attention to it. I heard a whoosh sound and it was gone. I could see it run through to the woods. “Vampires?” I asked myself
