Selena sat up straight. Her ears were on fire. Her heart was beating wildly. She had nothing to say.
“We are supposed to be getting married.” Roland continued. He grabbed her hand and looked her in the eye. “Selena, if you, even now, don’t want to be my bride, I will find a way. You won’t have to be…. I have put you through enough.” He searched her face for an answer. She said nothing. She didn’t move. “Do you wish me to go?”
Selena wanted to scream and cry. She wanted to throw things at him, but then kiss it better. She had never felt like this before. -How could he be so attractive, and sweet? This was the man that murdered my family! - She averted her gaze from his face.
“I’ll take that as a yes.” Roland stood and smoothed his clothing. He walked to the door and turned the handle.
“Roland.” She spoke quietly.
“Look, I know when I’m not wanted. I was following orders. My father is a very powerful man. I didn’t like what he made me do. I didn’t want to do it. I never meant to hurt anyone.…People have turned away from me my entire life.”
“Roland.” She said again, this time louder. He turned and looked at her. “Please, sit down.” She looked into his azure eyes.
“Why?” Roland asked her. “You want to formally reject me?”
“Rejection! Yeah, that’s a word you know! Funny guy!” She laughed hysterically like a mad woman. “I’m not the one that killed your parents!”
Roland stormed back to the couch. He pushed her head back against the backboard. Selena was frightened. His eyes bore through hers. Roland kissed her on the mouth, hard. Then, he walked away. “Good bye Selena.” He whispered. Roland threw the door open and went through it. Closing it behind him, he thought he would never return.
“What the hell just happened?” Selena was lost in thought. Her lips burned. - Oh, his eyes! Oh my God, his eyes! He was so hot. He was right here! That delicious man was Roland Derossa! - She rocked back and forth. -We were looking for each other. He kissed me! Does he want to marry me? Why?
Reject him formally? What the f*** does that mean? I asked him to sit down. I’m so confused…- Selena sat and rubbed her temples. -Some date. I have to get my emotions under control. What did he expect? That I’d be happy that he showed up? -
“Damn.” Her lips were still warm from his kiss. She went to her bathroom and washed her hands and face. “Now what?” She walked into her room and punched a pillow.
-Marry Roland Derossa. I’m alone. He’s alone. He’s hot. His father is demanding it. My family is gone. I have nothing and no one. Except for Roland…. -
She went to the back of her closet. She pulled a large hanging package out. Selena placed it over her bed and unzipped the front. Opening the suit bag up all the way, revealed her mother’s wedding dress. Her father had saved it for her. Selena pouted and chewed on her fist as she stared at it. She contemplated running away. Her stomach lurched. She punched her pillow a few more times.
-The last time that this was out of the plastic, my mother was touching it. - Selena thought as she fingered the plastic wrap. “f**k it.” She unwrapped it and tried it on. It fit her like a glove. The dress hugged her curves in all of the right places. A tight bodice, with tank top style top, curved out at the hip with lace covering the white and silver floral design all the way to the floor. Inside of the suit wrapper was the matching gloves that went past the elbow and a white visor hat sewed onto the veil. It was gorgeous. She was gorgeous. She looked just like her mother.
Selena bit her lower lip. She took the dress off and hung it up to get some air. She stared at it. When she looked back to her closet, she noticed that there was a suitcase, under where the dress had been hanging.
Selena grabbed the suitcase and tossed it onto her bed. She hurriedly unzipped the kit. She rummaged through every pocket and zipper that she could find. It was empty. Selena sat next to it on her bed and tapped her foot, nervously. “Is this a sign, Dad?” She spoke to the air and laughed. Selena tilted her head back and sighed.
“Ok. I’m listening.” She closed her eyes for a minute. Selena looked around her apartment. There isn’t really anything here that I have to have. She packed some clothing and hygienic items. “Well s***, if I’m getting married then I’m going to need more than this.” She grabbed her perfume and makeup bag.
Selena dug deep in her drawers and found a silk nighty. Her heart raced as she thought of Roland. The way that he had caressed her hair, and then the hard kiss that had left her breathless.
“F***, I’m falling for a killer.”
