Chapter 2

The next morning Selena awoke with a headache. She climbed out of bed and stumbled to the shower. Selena had just gotten out of the of the water, when she thought of something. “Didn’t the guard say that Roland had to be threatened?” She tried to remember his exact words. All she could distinctly recall was the feel of his huge hands, and the horrendous smell of alcohol. It was early. She glanced at the clock and whined. “Six o’clock. “ She rummaged through her drawers before settling on blue jeans and a tee shirt. Selena yawned and pulled them on. “What am I going to do?” She thought about running away, but she didn’t have anywhere to go. She had no family left. Everyone she got close to had died. She didn’t date and had no real friends. -Was this that bad of an idea? She wouldn’t be alone. - “But he killed my family!” She did some stretches as her coffee brewed. “I have to talk to him.” She decided. Selena filled her coffee mug and decided to take it dark. She inhaled its contents and sighed. Two sips down, she put on her running shoes and walked to the door. CHAPTER TWO Halfway down the block, someone from the sidewalk called her name. “Who in the hell?” She turned to see the most smoldering blue eyes that she had ever come across. He had a strong build and slender frame. His jet-black hair was the kind you just wanted to run your fingers through. “Do I know you?” Roland couldn’t imagine she didn’t recognize him. Then again, he wasn’t in his kill suit. He had never been very close to her, either. “Selena Clemott, right?” He smiled at her. She was beautiful. She smiled back shyly. “Yea?” Her face twisted quizzically. Roland swallowed the air stuck in his throat. “So, I’ve heard around that you are all alone.” -That was stupid he thought. - She backed up a bit and the smile left her face. “How do you know that?” This handsome creature was making her nervous. “I didn’t mean anything by it. I just wanted to offer you, my company. “ He shook his head in the affirmative, hoping to not have scared her off already. He was trying to choose his words carefully. Her eyes lit up. “Like what, a date?” She laughed mockingly. “Yeah.” He coughed. “I’ll pick you up at 9?” Selena blinked and stared at him. She was in a complicated situation. Date a total stranger…. Or marry one? She smirked. “yeah sure why not. Right here at 9!” She laughed “I have to go. I have errands to run. Sorry. “ She had to find Roland. She began to walk away. Selena turned to smile at him, and get another look, but he had disappeared. Roland watched her walk away, from the shadows. He was more comfortable there. -What was he thinking? A date? His father said to kidnap her. Hahaha. She didn’t know me! She didn’t even ask for my name. If she knew me, she definitely wouldn’t have agreed to go out tonight. She hates me. She vowed to her father to kill me. And we have a date. All that she knows about me is I follow orders. I murder people. No, I murdered her people. - “F***!” He raked a hand through his hair. -What am I going to do? - Roland began walking back to his house. He was meandering, very slowly. - I have a date. I can just bring her home after dinner, and bring her father. Then he can tell her who I am! - He shook his head. “I’m such a coward.” Selena didn’t know where to find assassins’ day hang outs. She didn’t know what she was looking for, or where to find it. She walked past cafés and diners. She looked through some shop windows. “This is stupid.” She decided. She walked back home to her waiting coffee pot. It was nearly noon. Selena picked up a book and read a few chapters before her eyes grew heavy. She dreamily fell asleep on her sofa, finally, getting some much-needed rest. She dreamed of magical creatures and floating clouds. She reached into a cloud and pulled cotton. She spun and spun and a majestic wedding dress wound itself around her. She awoke in a panic. Glancing at the clock again, she was breathing heavily. She laughed. -I have a date with a handsome stranger. - Selena went upstairs and tidied up her room. She then went about to finding an outfit for the evening. His eyes wouldn’t leave her mind. It was about five minutes to 9 when Roland came to her door. Selena hadn’t given him an address. She was mesmerized by him, and didn’t mind so much. Selena invited him in for a drink. “Go ahead and make yourself at home. I’ll be ready in a few.” Roland looked around her quaint little apartment. Maroon carpeting against baby blue walls, a white sofa and a green rocking chair. It was very Picasso. There was a tv stand with an older, television on it. It was covered in dust. There were a few articles of clothing lying about. Roland had maids for such things. He looked at the pictures on the walls. He saw her family. A portrait of her mother looked just like her. Another picture hanging, was of Selena when she was young, in her mother’s arms. -She looks just like her. - Roland thought. Selena came out of the kitchen and stood next to him. “That’s my mom.” Her eyes filled with tears that she refused to let fall. “She was killed right after that was taken.” Selena said cynically. Roland looked at her. He realized the pain that his family had given her; the pain from what he had done. “I never understood why she had to be killed. I didn’t understand any of it.” Selena bit her lip. -Why was she saying all of this now? He didn’t need to know. - “I’m sorry.” Roland offered sincerely. He gently placed his hand on her shoulder, for comfort. “I understand now. I’m just a decoy in a f***ing game!” She angrily hissed. “They are all dead! From some Bulls***t from my grandfather.” She threw her hands at the pictures as if she would punch them but didn’t. “They killed my entire family. I am the only one left…” She let the tear fall down her face. She sank to her knees. Her grieving was not over. She had just lost her father. “And now I have to marry that Bastard’s son!” She sobbed into her hands, covering her face. Roland rubbed her back for a moment. He reached around her waist and gently hoisted her onto her couch. He kneeled next to it, smoothing her hair. “Please, don’t cry.” He whispered. “You have been through so much. You are stronger than you think.” He sighed and kissed her on the forehead. “I’m so sorry.” He said. Selena met his gaze. She was shaken with reality at that moment. In his eyes she saw the truth. She shivered. “You’re Roland. Aren’t you?” Her voice was barely audible. He looked at the floor. “Yes.” He spoke softly. “I am Roland Derossa.” He briefly looked at her. He nodded and gave a quick smile. “I couldn’t tell you this morning. I wanted the chance to get to know you.” He looked away again. “A chance for you, to get to know me.”
