Derossa

The Derossa’s mansion had polished oak wood floors as far as you could see. A granite mantel piece to the left, and a corridor with three chambers to the right. There was a spiral staircase a couple yards in front of her. There were no wall hangings or tapestries, and no dust! Only a few dim lights came from the rooms to the right, and a faint light at the top of the stairs. The mantle was burning cedar wood, that smelled heavenly. Her heart thudded in ears. She made her way to the staircase. She took a step up. “ I can’t do this.” She thought. Her stomach lurched. She turned to run out the door. Instead of free space that had been empty only moments ago, she hit something. Something hard. The lights came on and she felt large hands on her shoulders. “Well, well, well.” He said as he took in her features. He smiled devilishly. “If it isn’t my favorite, little girl.” “Mmmm. Mr. Derossa.” She stammered. “I came to see you.” “So it seems. About your father, right?” He glared at her and lit a cigar, from his pocket. He raised an eyebrow. She paused for a moment, trying to steady her breath. “Yes.” She responded. Lile smoked for a moment, eyeing her. He raised his eyebrow further. “Keep stuttering and you’re going to piss me off, little girl.” He exhaled the smoke and licked his teeth. “You don’t want that.” She stood straight up. “My name is Selena. Not little girl.” She told him defiantly. “Fine.” He shrugged his broad shoulders and blew a puff of smoke in her direction. “Have a seat, Miss Clemott.“ He motioned for her to sit in the one of the sturdy, oak board chairs that were lining the walls of the nearest room. “I’d rather not.” She said not wanting this to go any further. He eyed her again. He blew his smoke in her direction purposefully. He shrugged again. “You’re comfort, not mine.” He walked into the room and heaved his large frame onto a desk. Selena couldn’t believe that she was here, in his house. She was talking to a mob boss, and acting like a selfish, stuck up, snobby, b***h. Her life flashed before her eyes. She shivered. “I’m not going to bite you!” Lile examined her. “I am not the snake that you think I am.” “Why should I believe that? The rest of my family is dead because of you!” She snapped back. A tear threatened to fall. He made a grumbling sound in his throat. Lile sniffled. “First of all, I promised to not hurt the last Clemott. I will not harm you. I keep my promises. I am also going to tell you that, Clemott, will cease to exist in a few days.” He raised his eyebrows. She was exasperated. “OK, so which is it? Kill me or not? You won’t hurt me, but someone else will. OK I get it. I’m fine right now, but in a few days I won’t be.“ She was babbling. She needed to stop her mouth but she couldn’t. It was like the stress of the situation was causing word vomit, that never ended. “I’m not going to have you killed either. You are a very stubborn child. Speaking of children,” he blew out another puff of smoke. “Your children will be called Derossa. Therefore, there will be no more Clemott’s.” He was getting tired of her attitude and disrespect. She stepped back a few paces. “You think I would sleep with you! You might as well go ahead and kill me! I’m not giving you children!” She shook her head no as she continued to step back. “Not me!” He laughed. “You are a very pretty, spirited little thing. Don’t get me wrong I could teach you some manners. But no. You will marry Roland,” he shook his head yes, and leered at her. “In two days.” He smiled wider as she backed further away. “You will love him, and honor him and” Selena cut him off. “Hell No! You think you can just plan my life! Mr. Derossa. You are dead wrong. I will not marry an assassin! I will definitely not be marrying the assassin that killed my family! Any assassin, let alone your f*****g son!” She threw her hands up as she spoke vehemently. She stormed across his house. “We are done here!” She ran from his house and slammed the huge door behind her. Tears streamed uncontrollably down her face as she ran from street to street. She could hear her heart beating in her ears, with the echo of her running shoes on the pavement. The neighborhood around her was a blur of green and brown. Street lights were on, but were just another color splash in her blurry sight. She made it to her apartment. Running up the stairs she almost tripped. She fumbled for her keys in the dark. She could not believe what he was trying to do. -What gave him the right? - Once inside she dead bolted her door and window. Not changing, she threw herself onto her bed and sobbed into her pillows. Her thoughts were swimming with the entire day’s events. She thought of her father’s blood on her hands, all the way to when she bumped into Lile Derossa. She cringed. “I need a f*****g shower.” Roland was in the kitchen when he heard the commotion. He had decided to go down stairs to get a drink. There was no use trying to sleep. There was also no use arguing with his father. Roland listened intently to the conversation that he heard. -Selena was so bold! How could she talk to his father that way, if he couldn’t? - Roland couldn’t believe that his father was pushing this on him. -Why did he have to marry her? Why would he be assigned to kill her entire family, and then marry her? This made no sense. - “One more duty.” He said shaking his head at his glass of water. -Did he really mind though? Selena was beautiful, smart and confident. He had admired her from afar, before. “Why can’t I stand up to father like that?” He thought of her long brown hair, swooping down from its high pony tail, as she bent to tie her shoe. Her slenderness and strength shown through her grace, elegantly. He was attracted to her. There wasn’t a doubt about that. He thought of his options as he walked back to his room. The lights were all off now and everyone had vacated the study rooms. Roland closed his bedroom door behind him. The breeze, from the window, pushed a small white paper to flutter off of his dresser, and land on the floor. Roland eyed it suspiciously. It was a note. “Congratulations son! Getting married. This one will make you real happy. The wedding will be in two days at noon. You will kidnap her tomorrow night. Bring her to me.” Roland guffawed. “Yeah ok.” He thought about it for a few moments. He folded the paper up into smaller and smaller sections, before twisting it and throwing it to the floor. “Damn.” He said aloud. “I need to talk to her.”
