CHAPTER 1:SIGN THE DIVORCE PAPERS
“Sign the divorce papers, Evelyn.” The words hit me harder than any slap ever could. I stood completely still, staring at the man sitting across the enormous black desk. Alexander Blackwood. My husband. For three years, I had lived in his mansion, slept in the same house, carried his surname, and secretly loved him. Yet at that moment, he looked at me as if I were nothing more than a business problem he wanted to get rid of. His expression was cold. Unemotional. Perfectly controlled. Just like always. My eyes slowly moved toward the documents lying on the desk between us. Divorce Agreement. Those two words seemed to grow larger every second. I swallowed the lump in my throat. “Why?” Alexander leaned back in his chair. “There is no reason to continue this marriage.” My fingers tightened around the edge of my dress. “No reason?” He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he looked at his watch. That hurt more than his words. Three years. Three years of marriage. And he couldn't even spare me five minutes. “Alexander,” I whispered, “at least tell me what I did wrong.” “You did nothing wrong.” “Then why are you divorcing me?” “Because the contract is over.” The room suddenly felt freezing. Of course. The contract. I almost laughed. How could I have forgotten? Three years ago, Alexander and I had signed a marriage agreement. Three years. That was all it was supposed to be. He needed a wife to satisfy his grandfather's final wish and secure his position as the heir of Blackwood Empire. I needed money to save my mother's life. It had been a simple arrangement. No love. No expectations. No emotions. That was what the contract said. But contracts didn't explain what would happen when one person broke the rules in their heart. I had fallen in love with him. Silently. Completely. Foolishly. I looked at Alexander again. “Is there someone else?” For the first time, something changed in his eyes. Only for a second. Then his face became expressionless again. “That doesn't matter.” “It matters to me.” “You're not entitled to an explanation.” My heart cracked. Not because he was leaving. But because after three years, he still didn't consider me important enough to deserve the truth. I walked toward the desk. My legs felt weak. I picked up the divorce papers. The pages trembled in my hands. “Do you want me to sign them now?” “Yes.” One word. No hesitation. I looked at him. “Have you ever loved me?” Silence. Alexander's jaw tightened. I waited. One second. Two. Three. Nothing. That silence was my answer. I lowered my eyes. A tear slipped down my cheek before I could stop it. I quickly wiped it away. I wouldn't cry in front of him. Not today. Not after he had already made me feel so small. I picked up the pen. My hand shook as I placed it against the signature line. Then I stopped. There was something I hadn't told him. Something that had happened only two days ago. Something that had changed my entire life. I was pregnant. His child was growing inside me. I placed my free hand unconsciously over my stomach. Alexander didn't notice. Of course he didn't. He had never noticed the little things about me. He didn't know that I had started getting sick every morning. He didn't know that I couldn't stand the smell of coffee anymore. He didn't know that two nights ago, I had sat on the bathroom floor crying after seeing two lines on a pregnancy test. And he definitely didn't know that I had spent the entire night wondering how I would tell him. I had imagined this moment differently. I had imagined him smiling. Perhaps even holding me. Perhaps saying that everything would be okay. Instead, I was sitting in front of him with divorce papers. I took a deep breath. Then I signed. Evelyn Carter. My name looked strange on the paper. I pushed the documents toward him. “There.” Alexander looked down. For a moment, he didn't move. His fingers rested on the papers. Then he picked them up. “Thank you.” Thank you. That was all. I stared at him in disbelief. A bitter smile appeared on my lips. “That's it?” He looked at me. “What else do you want me to say?” I wanted to scream. I wanted to ask him why he had never looked at me the way I looked at him. I wanted to ask him if all those nights when he came home late had another woman waiting for him. I wanted to ask him whether our three years together meant absolutely nothing. But I said none of those things. Instead, I stood. “Nothing.” I turned toward the door. “Evelyn.” I stopped. My heart foolishly jumped. Maybe he had changed his mind. Maybe he would ask me to stay. Maybe— “You need to leave the house before tonight.” My heart fell again. I nodded slowly. “Of course.” I opened the door. Before stepping outside, I turned around one last time. Alexander was already looking at his computer. He had moved on. Just like that. Our marriage was over. I walked out. The moment the door closed behind me, I pressed my hand against my mouth to stop myself from crying. I made it down the hallway. Past the portraits. Past the expensive furniture. Past the huge staircase where Alexander and I had once stood together for a family photograph. Then I reached the front door. The mansion's security guard opened it for me. “Madam, shall I prepare the car?” I shook my head. “No.” “Your luggage?” “I'll come back for it.” I didn't wait for an answer. I walked outside. The rain had started falling. Heavy drops landed on my face, mixing with my tears. I didn't know where I was going. I didn't know what I would do. But I knew one thing. I couldn't stay there. I placed my hand over my stomach. “It's okay,” I whispered. A strange warmth spread through me. “I'll protect you.” I looked back at the mansion one final time. Three years of memories stood behind those walls. Three years of loving a man who had never loved me back. I wiped my tears. “I won't come back.” But fate had other plans. Because before I could take another step, my phone rang. It was Sophia. My younger sister. I answered. “Hello?” Her voice was trembling. “Evelyn, where are you?” “I'm outside.” “Outside where?” I hesitated. “Alexander's house.” There was silence. Then Sophia whispered, “He divorced you?” My eyes closed. “Yes.” “Did you tell him?” I knew exactly what she meant. “No.” “Evelyn!” “I couldn't.” “You're carrying his child! He has the right to know.” I looked toward the mansion. The lights from Alexander's office were still visible through the windows. “No.” “Why?” “Because he chose to end our marriage.” My voice broke. “He doesn't want me, Sophia. I'm not going to force him to want my child.” “But what about the baby?” I looked down. My hand rested protectively over my stomach. “The baby has me.” Sophia sighed. “You can't do this alone.” “I have to.” A car suddenly passed in front of me, splashing water onto the pavement. I stepped back. Then I heard Sophia's voice again. “Where will you go?” I looked toward the road. For the first time in three years, I had no home. “No idea.” “Come to me.” I hesitated. Then I smiled sadly. “Okay.” I ended the call. I took one last look at Alexander's mansion. Somewhere inside, the man I loved was probably already forgetting that I existed. He didn't know I was carrying his child. He didn't know that tonight was the last time he would ever see me. And he certainly didn't know that five years from now, I would return to his world with a little boy who had his eyes, his smile, and his blood. Five years later, Alexander Blackwood would look at his son for the first time. And everything he believed about our marriage would collapse. But for now, I walked away. Without knowing that the greatest secret of his life was growing inside me. And without knowing that our story had only just begun.
