Chapter 12

Wyvern

After Queen Zuri and Princess Mari left, I heard an angry scream coming from the garden. I rush back to make sure no one is hurt.

“Everything and everyone alright?” I asked the crowd worriedly.

“You! That’s what’s wrong!” Queen Adelinda told me.

“Huh? What did I do? I did as you told me to do. To change into something suitable and come to this party and I did.” Her cheeks turn from angry pink to angry red and she lets out another angry scream.

“And then you had to tell everyone that you were Cadmus’ mate!”

“Because I wanted to be honest with people who I’ll probably be seeing and working with again? Lying to them is a great way to start a relationship! Also, I didn’t tell Cadmus to drop in like he did, he did that all by himself!” Now I was getting angry at her! She was pushing my buttons, and I didn’t like it!

“What is it with you three?? Why are you so dead set against me being Cadmus’ mate?? I didn’t make that choice! The dragon gods did! If you have a problem with their choice, take it up with them!” I walk away before I regret saying something that I shouldn’t. I could hear another angry scream coming from his mother, but damn it I didn’t care. I saw Cadmus standing at the door again and he applauded me.

“Bravo, bravo you’re one of the few people to stand up to my mother besides myself and father. I’m impressed.”

“I had to do something! Questioning me on something she asked me to do! Is she really surprised that I’d tell everyone that I was your mate? I’ve got no doubts that she and the Sunswirls said that Kindra was your mate. In fact, Princess Maris told me they were! So I had to clear the air.” Just thinking about them was making my blood boil. I was getting so angry some of my scales were showing!

“Darling, you need to calm down. Hayle is trying to come through.”

“Don’t ‘darling’ me! Give me one good reason I shouldn’t let Hayle barbecue them!?”

“Well, I think that’s technically treason, but I doubt you’d get a trial since basically everyone hates my mother.” That’s kinda sad if you think about it. I let out a deep sigh and tried to calm down.

“The only reason I’m not barbecuing all three of them is because she’s your mother and no family should be without their mother. No matter how cruel she is or how old the child is. Also that’d hurt your father since isn’t she his fated mate?”

“Unfortunately, she is. Sometimes I wonder what my father saw in her.” Ouch even from your own son. I hope our children don’t think of me like that someday.

“They won't,” Hayle piped up.

“Nice of you to show up! You’ve been quiet for a while.” I half scolded her, but the thought of someone stealing my mate she hasn’t stopped growling.

“Before I forget the water kingdom queen mentioned a kingdom tour, what’s that?”

“When we announce our engagement, we go around different kingdoms and socialize with our neighbors. Although with the excitement you made today I think we may have to extend our tour.” We have a small laugh and leave the garden. “But what are we going to do with your mother and Kindra?”

“Probably put them back in their house arrest and back in the dungeon.” I hear a roar coming from his dad’s office and we back out of the way.

“What is the meaning of having these queens and princesses in my castle??” His dad shouts at his mom.

“It’s my normal tea party that I have every quarter. I would’ve had it in the spring but due to… unforeseen circumstances I didn’t.” She gets in his face and I feel like I should get some popcorn.

“Not that I don’t mind keeping up with our neighboring kingdoms, but this was done right under my nose! What else are you keeping from me!?” He shouts at her.

“Nothing else!” She shouts back. “But I’m not the one gone for days on end with Cadmus!”

“Hey, leave me out of this. I have done nothing!” Cadmus puts his hands up in surrender.

“Except bring a commoner in the palace!” His mom shouts at Cadmus, and I can feel his dragon about to get defensive of Hayle.

“Wyvern is my fated mate and I will not give that up because of how she was raised! Doesn’t matter if she’s royal or common!”

“It’s disgusting to even have her here! Let alone parading the fact she’s your mate to other princesses!” She makes a disgusted face and shivers.

“Who were proud of us! If you didn’t hear the applause and cheering, then you're deaf!” Wyvern shouts back at her. Ooh, she does it again and I’m so proud! “I will not be the kind of mate that’s a glorified party planner, and a spoiled brat! I’m going to be the kind of mate that will stand by Cadmus’ side whether it’s good or bad! I’m going to tell him things that he’ll probably not like or didn’t think about. The kind of mate that’ll be with him no matter what! And if that’s not good enough for your son then maybe you should’ve had the doormat kind of mate who’d let you do whatever.” I huff away from them before I barbecue them.

“Well said Wyvern. I couldn’t have said it better myself.” His dad says proudly. “I’m half tempted to reject you Adelinda for how you’re treating our daughter-in-law, and yes she is whether or not you like it!”

“Ario! You wouldn’t do that to us! We’re your mate!” I could see her dragon almost begging him not to reject her.

“And if I had known then what I do now, I probably would’ve rejected you then!” He growls again at her. “Guards!” I get confused as to why he’s calling guards, but they do as they're told and show up right in front of dad. “Take her Majesty the queen to the dungeon away from Princess Sunswirl until further notice.” The two guards grab mom and she’s screaming her head off of how she’s queen and she shouldn’t be treated like this. “Now that she’s out of the way, now I can probably focus on important things.”

“Dad… I hate to think about this, but…”

“Yes Cadmus?” Dad asks him calmly

“But what if mom wasn’t really your mate? What if she used a love potion or something to fake being your mate?” I stare at Cadmus shocked. His mom isn’t his real mate!? Who would do something like that!?

“That’s a serious crime. You should never use a love potion on someone otherwise it’s not a real connection and if they had children…” He stares at Cadmus. “Then they’d have no concept of love.”

“Of course I do, dad. How could I not? And mom… well mom may be a brat but she’s still my mom.”

“If I may…” I speak up and his dad nods for me to proceed. “If you find a diary or a journal from when your wife was younger that could be a big lead to whether or not she is. Maybe she wrote her plan if she isn’t.”

“She had a journal. I’ve seen it. Come on, you two.” We hurry to their bedroom and we go into a secret compartment of their closet.

“Has this always been here?” Cadmus asks his dad in surprise.

“Can’t tell you all our secrets.” He smirks at him and I try to hide my laugh. At least these two still have a good relationship despite all this craziness. “Here we are. Here’s the oldest looking one. Let’s see…” He skims it and we try to read it from over his shoulder.

Dear Journal,

Father is setting up this crazy idea for me to do. I’m not sure if I want to go on with it. On the one hand, he’s my father and I trust him, but on the other it’s a serious crime to do something as big as this. What am I to do? Do I go along with this or should I just keep finding my mate the old fashion way? I don’t want to let him down if I don’t do this, but do I have a choice? I’ve been secretly seeing someone behind my father's back and I think he may be my mate. I won’t find out until I’m 16 which is in a short few days! Do I use the love potion to fake being royal someday or keep seeing my potential mate? What to do, what to do? Delphyne and Typhon please help me! I want to make my family proud of me, but does that mean I ruin any relationship with my real mate? I’ll probably go along with it to make my father proud. That’ll get his attention. He only pays attention to me when he needs something. Most days I don’t hear from him for months cause he’s so focused on finding a mate for me with a prestige line. I just want love. Is that so hard to ask? I must go. I hear footsteps! I’ll write later!

He puts the journal down and all of us are just in shock. His mom may not be his dad’s real mate?!
