Chapter One
“Where’s my mum?” Zainab asked a maid who was arranging Zainab's wardrobe. “She is in the living room getting ready for her trip,” the maid replied, before returning to her work.
“A trip? Oh really? She didn’t inform me about any trip last night.” she said to herself as she rushed out of her bed to the bathroom to freshen up, after which she exited her bedroom to look for her mum.
“Mum,” said Zainab to her mum, who she found in the main room giving instructions to one of their guards.
“Good morning sweetheart’’ her mum greeted her with a smile as she hugged Zainab. “How was your night?’’
Zainab looked at his mum with an exasperated sigh. “Truly mum? We were together till late last night but you didn’t inform me of any trip. Was it something that just came up?”
“No, it isn't. It must have slipped my mind and I apologize and promise I’ll make it up to you later, but in order not to miss my flight, I have to leave soon.” said her mum.
“What country are you off to now? And also, when will you be back?” the question rose from Zainab.
“Well, I am going to England for business and I will be back after two days,” her mum explained while standing up. “Your birthday is around the corner and we need to complete all the plans soon”
“But Mum, I didn't receive any alert yesterday.” Zainab said with a frown.
The woman looked at her daughter in shock. “Zainab!” her mum cried out. “What alert again, Zainab? Two weeks ago, your dad and I sent you one million naira. What did you spend that money on? Sweetie, I wasn’t expecting you to request any more money so soon,” her mother continued. “And also considering that your father and I have spent a lot on your birthday preparations. Try to understand and be considerate of us.” her mother pleaded softly, being careful not to antagonize her.
“Are you being serious?” Zainab stood up with anger from the chair she was perching on. “I cannot ask my parents to provide for my needs anymore? As your only child, who else am I supposed to look to, to cater to my needs?” saying this, she walked out of her mum's to her room. The sound of the door slamming was loud and vibrating.
“Zay-” the older female was getting annoyed at her daughter. “She's at it again. Zainab!” she rushed after Zainab, finding her sobbing into her pillow.
“I can't believe this!. For goodness' sake, act like your age!! You're turning 22 and still throwing tantrums like a child? Now listen, I don't know what you want to use this money for, but I’ll see what I can do to send you some amount before the end of today,” she sat at the edge of the bed while stroking Zainab’s hair. “Is that okay, sweetie?” her mum tried to cajole her.
Suddenly, hysterical laughter burst out of Zainab. She wasn’t able to hold it in anymore. “I had you fooled, didn’t I?” Zainab said, lifting her head while laughing uncontrollably. “Mum, you know I stopped throwing tantrums since I was 10 and I don’t plan on starting again at an older age. I understand you, and I still have some money with me for what I want to do," said Zainab, with a smile. Her mum looked in shock for a few seconds before laughing and hugging her daughter.
“Well, I’m pleased with that, even though you had me worried for a minute,” said her mum.
“Mum, I was just kidding,” Zainab chuckled. “You really should start leaving or you’ll miss your flight,” she warned her mum.
“Oh, my God! I had almost forgotten about that.” her mum stood up quickly, giving her daughter a peck. “I love you, sweetheart."
“I love you too, Mum," replied Zainab with a smile.
“Give my regards to Khalid," said her mum, referring to Zainab’s boyfriend, and rushed out of the room.
