“I told you not to call me that.” I whispered angrily, he shouldn’t continue those pet names, I wanted to chalk it up to intoxication last night, but now I was starting to think it wasn’t just a drunken crush.
Continuing to lean close to me he turned back to the others, “How about I ask their opinion on it?”
“Excuse me?” I continued to attemot to leaned away but couldn’t manage to escape far enough.
“Auntie Claire, what would you say to Amalia being Luna?”
Claire looked as white as a ghost at the word her mouth falling open. The rest of the bar suddenly clambered around our table, everyone wanting a front row seat to this apparent surprise, that I personally would have liked to be included in before all of this.
“Luna?” The word shook out of Claire’s mouth, “Amalia is this true?”
I finally managed to gain freedom when I reached the edge of my seat sliding off completely staggering to my feet, “First of all,” I breathed deeply, “No. We just met, I’m a kitsune not a wolf, and also, we’ve had like two conversations.”
“Wait.” Nate pointed at me and I felt the force of an Alpha’s Pack turning on me, “Do you mean to tell me you’re rejecting Isaac?”
Of the few things I knew about wolves I knew they didn’t like hearing rejections. My dumbass self didn’t care. I wanted to disappear from this place. “There’s nothing to reject because there’s nothing between us.” I quickly snapped my fingers and watched as Isaac saw me struggle through the crowd.
He stood up pounding his fist on the table projecting his voice loud shaking the walls and ceiling, “Everybody sit the f**k down! No one moves on Amalia. No one! Leave her alone. Go back to your food and if I see one person follow me I’ll tear your ears off.”
I made my way outside and down an alleyway before coming to a stop behind a dumpster. I was out of sight enough I hoped but wouldn’t dare lower my illusion.
“Amalia?” I looked up thankfully no one was in front of me but I knew sitting on the other side of the dumpster out of view was that dumb wolf, “I didn’t mean to put you on the spot.”
“So now that we’re alone would you care to explain what’s going on?” I thought I already knew what was happening, but his silence was worrisome. “I reject you Isaac.”
“Do you now?” He smiled and peaked around the corner, “You see you’ve rejected me twice now and yet I’m not feeling it.”
I met his eyes and ducked my head down into my knees again, “I do though. I reject you as my mate. I don’t want you.” Tears started to flow down my cheeks but still Isaac continued to smile, twisting himself around so he was on his knees right in front of me.
“Say it like you mean it then. Because I don’t feel it.” Whispering as his hands stroked the top of my head his breathing escalated.
I looked up his hand recoiling, “How many times do I need to say it?”
“I don’t know. Honestly,” he seemed more concerned now thinking that I might be serious with not wanting him.
“Can you please just leave me alone? I need some time to myself.” I was thankful he listened as I heard his footsteps retreating. If anyone could help me my mentor Reynard would. I reached into my bag and pulled out my phone dialing him quickly.
“Amalia? Hey, heading back already?” his voice was music to my ears.
“Not yet, I need you to explain something to me.”
“Of course, what’s wrong?” He could sense my dilemma, he knew something was wrong, but nothing could prepare him for what I was going to ask.
“Can a kitsune be fated to a werewolf?”
“Your father was. So I imagine so. Why?”
“It’s nothing, really, but how does a kitsune reject the werewolf?”
A laugh came through the phone at my question. I was a silly little girl inexperienced and unprepared and he knew it, “We aren’t able to reject. We are not governed by the moon goddess. So while we don’t feel the bond, the werewolf does. So it’s up to them to reject you.”
“Okay, so how do I get a werewolf to do that?”
“Were you fated Mrs Sirius?” Using my last name was my least favorite thing anyone could do and he knew it all too well. Sirius, such a dogish name.
“That’s not important. So tell me.”
“Who was it? Second cousin? Uncle? You know werewolves are the inbred litter of the world.”
“That’s a racist stereotype Rey. Can we cut the s**t?” I was half a second away from hanging up on his trickster ass.
“Okay, look, even if you could convince the wolf to reject you don’t let anyone else know about this.”
“You think I want to tell anyone else?”
“Amalia, I’m being serious, if the skulk leaders find out you’ll be banished. They don’t let species mix like that.”
“Of course they don’t.” I rolled my eyes, now this inconvenience was going to jeopardize my job, my life, and my position in the skulk.
“Look, here’s a bit of exciting news.” exciting? I could use exciting, “I wanted to wait until you got back to tell you, but your application was approved.”
“My application? I sent off weeks ago. Why was it approved now?” Rising in rank in the skulk was all based on work ethic and those who applied were looked at with a fine toothed comb.
“They didn’t say, but come back here, and they’re going to promote you. What’d I tell you? Stick with me and I’ll make sure you go places.”
Sure, but now it was up to me to not only get that guy to reject me, but do it all in a time frame that allows me back at the skulk in a few days.
