64 JJ sat next to Rachel’s bed. She felt mildly guilty holding the girl’s hand, because JJ’s own hands were still cold, and because JJ suspected she was doing it more for her own benefit than for Rachel’s. The child looked lost in a sea of white sheets, and the IVs and oxygen mask made her look even more fragile, made JJ fear she could damage the tiny hand.
