65 “Adam?” Luther called out. There was no answer. He followed his own voice’s echo, forward toward the open sky and a pinnacle of rock that rose out of the mountain to his right. He tried to take its measure, but it was still too dark. It was impressive, though, or at least it would be to a Sunday picnicker. To him, it just felt like a helluva lot of ground for getting picked off by a sniper. Luther turned off his lamp for a moment and sat on a rock, to see what he could without its glare and to feel less like a target. He stretched his eyelids open wide, blinked a few times and waited. Luther heard a little something up the ridge, no doubt a combination of his paranoia and actual deer or raccoons doing their nighttime rounds.
