48 Adam jerked awake and immediately regretted it. One hand was trapped beneath a quilt, and his instinctive struggle to free it triggered knife-stabbing pain in his side. Harlan stood over him. Adam shifted in the bed, trying to sit, only to find that his other hand—fingers still entwined with JJ’s—had fallen asleep, as had JJ. “Just stay put,” Harlan said. The man’s voice was low, but combined with Adam’s movements, it made JJ stir. She lifted her head, blinked sleep-blurred eyes and asked, “What’s wrong?” “Nothing,” Harlan said. “I’m sorry I woke you.
