“Just what the hell were you playing at?” Iris demanded. “Language,” Harlan said, but his voice was so weak it was barely audible. JJ was monitoring his pulse—trying anyway, as his whole arm trembled in JJ’s hands—while Iris banged around in the kitchen, supposedly making coffee. “You wouldn’t mind using gloves, would you?” Harlan asked. JJ glanced at the man to make sure he wasn’t joking. He wasn’t; he stared at JJ’s fingers where they touched his skin. “No, not at all,” she said, and stood. “Good,” he said. “They’re in the bathroom under the sink. Please check on Adam while you’re there.” JJ paused in the hallway outside the bathroom door.
