Two new werewolves came in and one of them picked Ron off the floor. He made it seem so easy that it reminded me of picking up a toddler and putting them over your shoulders. “Where are you taking Ron?” I looked up at Jayce. “We are taking the hu-,” he cleared his throat,” Sorry. We are going to be taking Ron to our holding cell until we can arrange a ride back to Verna and drop him off in a safe location so he can go do as he wishes.” The two werewolves took that as their orders and walked off with Ron. Even though we just had our differences, he was on my side and had my back since I was 13 years old and going on missions. My heart still broke that he turned on me but at the same time, he broke that bond as easily as snapping a twig. “Are you hurt at all?” Jayce was staring at my arms that were red. I tried shift them a bit out of his sight. “I’m fine. A bit sore but I will be fine.” I gave him a side smile.
“Okay everyone, as you know, I am Alpha Jayce of the Blackwater Pack. I will personally be showing you your quarters after I hold a meeting with my entire back. We don’t normally have humans roaming around so I will have to make sure everyone knows not to attack. I am assuming that by you continuing to follow Maxine as your leader, that you are okay with not attacking my Pack.” Jayce looked at everyone who was nodding their heads in agreement. “Great. Now, please follow me and I will give you a brief tour while I call for a meeting in 30 minutes.” Jayce then whipped out his phone and sent out a mass text to everyone. He held up his phone a bit and chuckled. “I only mind link my entire Pack during emergencies and text messaging is easier and less distracting if they are busy.”
Jayce started to walk out of the room and all of us followed. I followed right behind Jayce and let everyone tail behind me. Aaron and Jenna were in the back. They were talking in hushed tones, and I tried to pick up what they were saying but it was too low. “Aaron is talking about how awkward we have been since meeting each other.” Jayce said quietly and winked. It was like he read my thoughts and since his hearing was better than mine, he decided to keep me in the loop. “This building is our headquarters. We use this building for meetings between Packs, between pack members and other activities. We also use this building for surveillance. The top floor of this building is used only for that purpose as we have to keep an eye for attacks from rogue vampires, werewolves and others.” I didn’t look around, but I did watch everyone else. They looked in awe like I did at the sophistication of this building.
We passed through two front doors. They had badge cards to get in and out of the building, so it was under high security. We walked outside and I just realized that it was evening. The sun was about to go over the mountains, but I was still able to get a good view. The view in front of me reminded me of a small town. It had shops and stands along with actual sidewalks and roads. People were walking around and talking. Kids were playing and laughing. Streetlights were coming on and so were lights from inside the shops. The small town looked like it went on for at least 2 or 3 miles in each direction that I could see. There were more people here than I was led to believe. “This is amazing!” Shelby looked around in such enjoyment and looked up at Axel. “No kidding.” He didn’t even look down at her as he spoke.
“Tomorrow I will give you all a tour of the square. I need to have the pack meeting tonight so you all can roam around tomorrow and venture around. We do use human money as currency here. I will see what we can do to arrange for you all to have some so you can decorate your homes.” Jayce turned to the north and pointed to a huge mansion in the background. That is the packhouse. That is where Aaron and I stay at. Living there is also my Gamma and his Mate. We also hold training sessions in a large section of the house, hence the huge amount of space.
My mind was buzzing with information and trying to remember where everything was. All I kept thinking to myself was: This is going to be your new home. It felt nice to say. But at the same time, something felt off. Something inside of me felt like it was shifting but I couldn’t place my finger on it. I looked up at Jayce to ask a question, but his eyes were completely black. I widened my eyes and snapped my head to Aaron and his were the same. Jenna looked at me with a worried expression and was asking with her eyes ‘What do we do?’ Almost as if on cue both Jayce and Aaron’s eyes went back to normal. Jayce’s expression went from doting to serious. “Maxine, my warriors on the North side of the town alerted about a vampire ambush. They are under attack and need help. Please stay inside the HQ building and hide until I come back to get you.” I took a step back from him and crossed my arms and stared at him. “Hide?”
“Ohhhhh shit.” Jenna mumbled and pushed Aaron with her shoulder lightly to nudge him forward. Aaron looked back at her, and she made the expression ‘Fix this.’ and he seemed to get the hint and cleared his throat. “Not that you can’t handle yourself Princess Maxine. You don’t have any weapons and we don’t have time to grab you any. Next time?” Aaron looked back at Jenna and she looked at me and nodded. As much as I didn’t like it. Aaron was right. I didn’t have any weapons and neither did my team. My pride felt like it was hit, and I felt useless. “Fine. Buzz us back in.” I mumbled and turned on my heels and walked back toward the building. Just as I took two steps, I heard a loud howl from my right.
I snapped my head around and saw a brown wolf fighting with a vampire about 100 yards away next to the tree lining. Vampires looked just like a human, but they had red glowing eyes, long teeth and nails and had supernatural strength. Enough strength to keep up with a fully shifted werewolf. It was obvious the brown wolf was starting to lose the battle. “No!” Jayce took off running in a full sprint and shifted in midair. His wolf was at least 6 feet tall and was a beautiful midnight black with hints of grey at the bottom. His stride did not break, and his front paws hit the ground. “Dammit! Jenna, take this badge and run for the door. I can’t protect all of you and none of you have any weapons! Go!” Aaron handed his badge and took off sprinting in the same direction as his Alpha. Just like Jayce, he leaped into the air and shifted into a light grey wolf taking off full force to help Jayce.
“Let's go!” I took off running up the steps towards the building. I heard huffs and grunts of my teammates running up the steps behind me. I stopped at the door and Jenna handed me the badge. I stood at the door while everyone else went first. Just as I was going to run through the door, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around and the hand grabbed my jacket and threw me about 10 feet from the door. I landed on my side and the air flew right out of me. I looked up and a vampire was watching me. He was stood there without expression. “Well, well, if it isn’t a human. What are you doing here in werewolf territory?” His glowing eyes narrowed. I stood up and looked him up and down. His hair was black, and his skin looked pale against his black jacket and red shirt. He looked around 20 but with him being a vampire, he could easily be over 200 years old. I saw Jenna from the corner of my eye. She was holding a sword and slowly making her way towards us.
I couldn’t let the vampire see her until she was close enough to me to strike. “I could ask you the same thing bloodsucker. Sneaky of you to attack when the sun was barely over the mountains.” The vampires mouth twitched almost forming a smile then went back to a stoic expression. “That’s gutsy of you, human, to even speak to me. Your voice isn’t even shaking... even though you have no weapon.” He tilted his head slowly without blinking. “Your heart isn’t racing, yet, I can feel your blood through the air as if it was. It has a certain flavor to it that I’ve never tasted before. How...odd. What are you?” His glowing eyes were transfixed on me in a trance as if he was working through his own thoughts. “Human, you’re coming with me to see Cayden.” He started walking towards me and reached his hand out as if to grab me.
The next 3 seconds were a blur. All I saw was the hand reaching toward me and then a flash of silver came down and cut that hand off. The vampire started wailing and I ran to the side that I saw Jenna on. “She’s not going anywhere you asshole!” Jenna yelled while she pushed me back toward the building and we sprinted toward the doors. Axel was holding the door open and Shelby holding a gun aimed at the vampire that was behind us. “I will kill you for that!” The vampire screeched as he was holding his arm that started to profuse blood where his hand should be. His fangs were on full view as he lost composure. With the distraction from the wound Jenna inflicted, we made it inside of the doors. A female vampire started running at the male vampire and started yelling. “Nicholas, the mission failed. We need to leave.” She grabbed his hand that fell to the floor. “We need to leave! Now!” She urged again. She didn’t see us behind the doors right away but then she saw Nicholas looking at us. She turned and barred her fangs and hissed.
“Call everyone back. We will report our findings to Cayden.” Nicholas snarled. He looked at me straight in the eyes and narrowed them. The bleeding as already starting to come to a close and coagulate. The only thing protecting me from him was the shatter proof glass. If it could withstand werewolves, it could withstand him. “I will come back for you, human.” His eyes glowed a brighter red and he shifted his eyes back to Jenna. “And I will come back to kill you.” She flipped him off and pointed her sword at him. “Bring your ass back here and I will finish what I started you cold blooded blood bitch.” He looked at her again and took off running at a supernatural speed and the other female let out a loud shrill that sounded like a screeching siren. Within seconds, at least 20 flashes of vampires ran back into the forest and the werewolves running after them.
“Blood b***h?” I looked over at Jenna and was trying not to laugh. She shrugged and smiled. “I couldn’t think of anything clever to say.” Shelby started burst out laughing. “Dude, I almost lost it when you said that.” Axel looked outside and was trying to hide his smile. I looked back outside and saw werewolves coming back from the trees. I wonder how the meeting is going to go now after that attack. “I wonder what the mission was and what they were after?” I said softly to myself as my team was giggling in the background. It seemed like plans were about to unfold and things were about to get messy.
