My mind was buzzing. I've heard about Mates from my training as a Hunter. They were like soulmates for the paranormal. Instead of meeting someone and dating for a while, fate will choose someone for you, and they meet your need in every single shape and form. That would explain why Jayce kept me alive. Is that why I was attracted to him right away? Is that why I felt the way I was feeling but couldn't explain? I had so many questions that I felt my head was going to explode. My eyes were darting all over the table trying to make sense of what he just told me. Jayce was staying quiet in his chair letting me soak it in. Can werewolves have a human as a mate? Is that why Jayce asked what I was? "May I call you Maxine?" Jayce asked calmly. I nodded my head and stayed silent. "Maxine, I know this is a lot to take in right now and I will do the best I can for you to answer all of your questions. But I do need you to talk with your team and see what they want to do. This is something that needs to happen before tonight." He held up his hands in a cautious way. "Not that I want to rush you, but we need to figure out living quarters if any of them try to stay and I doubt they want to spend the night in the interrogation room again." I looked at him surprised. He was taking them into consideration because of me. Jayce didn't want to harm them because we were Mates. "I appreciate that Alpha Jayce." I nodded to him and slowly stood up. "Please, call me Jayce." He corrected softly. We locked eyes again.
Aaron out of nowhere started laughing. "Geez you guys are so formal it's hilarious! I feel so awkward right now." Aaron's laugh took me out of the trance I was in, and his laughter shifted the atmosphere of the room to a lighthearted one. "I can't wait to see how Jenna reacts. She's probably going to laugh too." He started to walk off and grab another water from the fridge. "Jenna? What does she have to do with anything?" I asked. I was thankful for the break in tension from the previous conversation but why her? Aaron stopped laughing and turned to me and smiled. "Because she just so happens to be my Mate." My jaw dropped and my mouth made a little popping sound. Aaron looked proud and then I remembered how she acted in the interrogation room and the warehouse. She was also acting off and I remember not being able to pinpoint way. Now I know the reason. "Princess Maxine, can I be the one to tell her that we are Mates?" Aaron beamed. I smiled back and nodded. I wasn't sure how I felt about all of this just yet, but I also wasn't sure how Jenna would feel about it either. I couldn't be the one to take that from her. All 3 of us walked to the door.
"Maxine, if it's okay, we're going to take you back to the interrogation room to talk with your team about what talked about earlier. Please remember, you are not a prisoner or a hostage." Jayce smiled. He reached out as if to touch my arm but then pulled back. "After you." He held the door open for me and let me walk out first. He followed right behind me. His scent was so overwhelming in a good way that I had to fight my inner self from smashing my face directly into his chest to get another direct whiff. THUNK. "Awesome bro," We turned around and saw Aaron walked out behind us holding his shoulder, "you get your Mate and forget I exist and let the door hit me in the shoulder." Jayce started laughing and held his hand out and they did a quick hand slide then knuckles. "I'm just as new to this as you are man. I'm sorry. A few more days and I'll be able to concentrate again." Aaron laughed too and took the lead when walking down the hallway back to the interrogation room. "I will probably be the same way man. No worries."
We all walked down the hallway in silence and the presence of Jayce was stronger than ever. I kept glancing at him from the corner of my eye and I would catch him doing the same. He would smile and keep walking. I loved that he was giving me space to take this all in. In all honesty, was I mad that I mated to a werewolf? I felt like I was taking this news in a lot better than I thought. The warrior in me wasn't thirsting for blood the way I normally do when I am around supernatural. Werewolves are not how I imagined they would be. Then again, all of the ones that I would fight were mostly rogue wolves who threatened humans. Have I been wrong about this situation the whole time? Were the Hunters unjustified in what we are doing in actively trying to rip apart and kill supernatural packs? None of this made sense.
We arrived at the interrogation doors, and I looked at Jayce and Aaron. "This is going to be a bit overwhelming for some of them. Can I have a few minutes alone and tell them what's going on from my point of view then see where they stand? You two can stand by the doors to hear when I am ready for you both to come in and Aaron, you can have your moment with Jenna. I am assuming that since you both are mates that she will be unharmed?" Aaron smiled and nodded. "Princess Maxine, Jenna is my mate and I swear that she will be treated like a goddess. Shes safe, I promise." I smiled back. I opened and closed the door and saw everyone in their own corners looking pissed off until they saw me. "What the f**k dude!" Jenna smacked my arm then hugged me tightly. I hugged her back and smacked her arm back with the same amount of force. "Thats payback!" I took a step back to avoid any more hits.
I looked at everyone and contemplated on how to deal with this. " Okay everyone, I have an announcement and then I am going to ask you all of something. But I want to start off saying that we are in no danger here." Ron stood up and bitterly laughed. "Not in danger? How the f**k are we not in danger here Princess? We are in the middle of werewolf territory, surrounded by evil dogs who would easily tear off our heads for looking at them the wrong way. You are going to get us killed. And you come back in and tell us that we aren't in any danger." He ended the part very sarcastic and hateful. I narrowed my eyes at him and stared at him for a few seconds without saying a word. "I understand that all of this is not ideal for you. For any of you. I am trying my best to keep you all alive and well. That," I pointed at him, " is what I promised you all I would do."
Everyone else looked uncomfortable except for Ron. "Well, you're doing a great f*****g job Princess! We are trapped and probably about to be killed. All because you f*****g froze at the warehouse, and I was dumb enough to follow you." The rage that he felt inside was showing through his eyes and is words. He was fuming and out of nowhere took a defensive fighting stance. He wanted a fight. Fine. I cracked my neck on both sides, rolled my shoulders back and put my fists in front of me and went into a defensive stance as well. "You sure you want to do this Ron?" I have never fought any member of my team in actual combat except for sparing. But I was not going to be talked down to. By anybody. Everyone backed into a corner to stay out of our way. I knew Ron's fighting style and it was good enough to keep up with me, but never enough to beat me. Part of me always wondered if it was because I was his Princess, and he went easy. Or if he didn't have the anger to go full force. I was about to find out. He cracked his neck and rolled his shoulders as well. "I will no longer follow you."
He lunged at me and threw a right hook. I ducked and threw a right punch that landed square in the jaw. He staggered a bit and ran back at me. He kicked with this left foot and aimed for my face, and I blocked at the right moment with both of my arms up. With the force behind his kick, it knocked me off balance and my arms started to sting. He took his opportunity and punched me right in the rib cage. I guess he WAS holding back. This room was WAY too small, and I kept coming close to hitting Axel and the others, so I had to end this quickly. Anger was always Ron's weakness. He couldn't control it, so I decided to use it against him. "You hit like a little b***h!" I kicked him square in the gut and followed up with a right hook to his cheekbone. His face was turning red from my two hits and my little comment was enough to set him off. He grunted and tried kicking me again straight in the chest. I stepped to the side and quickly jumped on his back and put him into a choke hold. Ron tried throwing me off and was pounding my back into the walls to try and get me to release. I tightened my hold on him and waited for him to tap. After a few more seconds he dropped to his knees. His skin went from milky white to bright red then purple. I felt his body start to lose consciousness and he started to stagger. I held on for 3 more seconds and he dropped to the floor. Shelby ran to see if he was still alive. I rolled over and started to pant. Jenna held her hand out to me and pulled me up. "He's breathing, he's just out cold. What a dumb ass." Shelby mumbled. Axel was standing in the corner and shook his head and looked down. "All he had to do was just wait to listen to what you had to say." Axel then looked at me. "You do have a plan for us, right?" Shelby, Jenna and Axel were all staring at me. I needed to come forward with what I had to say.
"I do have a plan. But I need you guys to be open minded." I took a long chug of water and they all nodded back in agreement. "Jayce and his pack will not harm us. They gave me the option on letting you guys leave or stay. You will have your own accommodations for sleeping. I haven't figured out the small details, but it comes with sleeping in beds and having meals." All three of them looked confused. "Why would they offer that? What aren't you telling us?" Shelby stated. She looked alarmed at what just happened but determined to find out the truth. I sighed and laced my fingers behind my neck and stared at the ceiling. "I had a meeting with Jayce. And..." I paused and let out a small sigh. "He told me that we were Mates." The silence in the room was deafening. I looked back at my team, and they looked in complete shock. "And because we are... Mates. He gave me two options. One, you agree to stay here with me where you will have guaranteed food and shelter. Two, you leave, and we will never see each other again. I am assuming we will take you back to Verna, but you will be alive and well." The silence was still heavy, and Shelby cleared her throat. "Princess, if what you are saying is true. I would like to stay." She looked up at Axel and he looked back down at her as he spoke. "Are you sure Shelby? You can never leave." Shelby slowly nodded her head. "I'm sure. We can't go back to Raine because of what King Knight said. And I dislike Verna. Where else would I go? Plus, if Princess Maxine gets to run this place with Alpha Jayce, I know we will be safe." Axel let out a long groan while he stretched out his arms. "You heard the girl. We're stayin."
Then I looked at Jenna who was standing there with her arms crossed. "Jen. What would you like to do?" I asked quietly. It would break my heart if she left. She was closest friend and my right hand. I would be completely lost without her. She smiled and uncrossed her arms. "As long as they have coffee and bagels for breakfast, I'll be here with you guys. Someone has to keep an eye on you." She looked down to Ron who was still passed out. "What about this dip s**t?" Jenna looked back at me. "You're not gonna want someone like this around you. Fucker." She tapped him with her foot. That's right. I looked down at Ron who was now laying on his back from Shelby checking to see if he had a pulse. I couldn't allow someone like him with us. He jeopardized everything here and could endanger us all with this behavior. My arms were going to bruise, and they were still stinging from Ron's boot. "Ron is going to be on his merry way back to Verna. He can figure it out from there." I took a few steps to the door and knocked 3 times. The door opened and both Jayce and Aaron walked in. Both had smiles on their faces until they looked down and saw Ron. Jayce looked at me as I shrugged, and he smiled. "Atta girl." Aaron let out a slow whistle. "Remind me not to get on your bad side. So," Aaron rubbed his hands together and looked around the room. "I'm guessing you are the ones that are staying?"
