City Lights

"Holy crap Ron! Slow down! If I die in a car accident and not in battle I am going to kick your ghost ass!" Shelby yelled from the back seat. I sneaked a peak at the speedometer and we were going 95mph in a 75mph on the highway. Whoa, I didn't even realize we were going this fast. "Dammit, she's right Ron. Slow your roll man. What's the rush?" I asked. Ron shook his head and tapped on the brakes. " Sorry guys. I was a bit lost in thought. I'll throw it in cruise control so I don't space it out again." Ron said as apologetically as possible and slowed down. He peaked back over at me and threw me a half smile and nodded. His way of silently communicating that he was going to go back to focusing 100% on the road and give us his attention as well. I nodded back deciding that I would ask him about it later when we were alone.   "Thanks!" Shelby squeaked and unwrapped a piece of gum. I turned in my seat to focus on everyone and took a deep breath. "Okay guys, we should be arriving to Verna around 3 a.m., so about 20 minutes from now. Once we arrive we are going to the Safe house at the edge of the city and unpack, catch a few hours of sleep and talk with the surveillance team that has been following Jayce and his pack. They should have some insight as to the time frame that they should be at the warehouse." I looked at Axel. "How are we lookin' with that layout?" He cleared his throat and sighed. "To be honest Princess, I don't feel comfortable with my thoughts on this until I talk with the surveillance team. There are too many windows and doors, I don't know if there are boxes of merchandise inside and if there is, what is the contents? Is it explosive or not? There are too many questions at this point that no plan seems safe." He took a deep breath and continued a bit more softly. "I just want to ensure that you all get back home safely and no one gets hurt." I looked and him and sighed. I know exactly what you mean Axel. "That makes sense," I nodded, "thanks for looking out for everyone. We will continue that part soon and see what options and plans we have." I sat back and looked straight ahead. Everyone else seems to be feeling the same way. Very ominous and cautious. Everyone is tippy toeing around each other to make sure the team makes it back home in one piece. Father should never have said what he said. It made everyone on edge and lose their normal confidence. It's words like that of uncertainty that make even the strongest feel weak and the smartest feel dumb. Second guessing things like this get people killed. This couldn't have been intentional, right?   "Sorry to bring you back to the present there princess," said Ron in a somewhat excited tone, "but I am starting to see the city lights. Can you call the safe house and let them know that we are close?" I looked down at my phone and my heart sank. Time just seems to be moving faster than it ever has in my life. It feels that just minutes ago we were just loading up in the car and its already been a few hours. My body wants to see Jayce but it also wants to stay away because of what will happen. I know he wouldn't feel the same when he sees me so I know I shouldn't feel sad. But why does even that thought make me feel worse? I am having feelings and thoughts over a guy, an enemy, that I have never met. Someone who wouldn't have seconds thoughts over killing me or my friends. Literally rip us to shreds when he shifts. When his Beta shifts. We were mere humans with weapons. Yes we were deadly, but we were also rattled before this mission even started. Our actions are already feeling shaky and the mission just barely started. What do I do? I look up at the moon and sigh. Its a full moon and it has a hint of red to it as it hides up in the sky beside some clouds. It looks so beautiful and starts to provide me comfort as I stare off into its craters. With my new found feeling of security, I pick up the phone again and call the safe house. "Hello!," A high pitched woman's voice shrilled, "Thank you for calling the Walker Residence! We are not available right now but please leave a message after the beep!" Beep. "This is Princess Maxine Knight of Raine. We are about 20 minutes out of Verna coming inbound from the east. A party of 5 arriving in a black Suburban. Are we clear for arrival?" I hear a slight shuffle on the other end of the pretend answering machine. "Yes Princess Maxine, you are clear for arrival." The same high pitched woman said. "Welcome to Verna."
