22 Misdirection Alex closed his eyes, letting them rest. A knee was drilling into his back, and a pistol pressed into his head. But the lights were still off. The only light in the room came from the doorway, and the couch blocked that. Even though he still couldn’t see, Alex knew he was in shadow. So he popped his thumbs into his palms and waited. Any second now, he’d get his opportunity. All he needed was— The doorway light snapped off. Complete darkness. “What the hell?” the guard kneeling on him said. “The door closes automatically,” Douglas said. “Sorry about that.” This was it.
