The Last Light of Haven

Beep. Beep. Beep. The steady hum of machines and equipment and quiet chatter fill the room. Every sound, every question, had a purpose. The feeling of unease is almost unbearable. The statement hanging over the busy room was obvious. Time was running out. From the center of the room a muffled cry escapes the glass container on the table. Inside he lay there alone. The container opens as the final click of the key pad is entered. A warm but gentle hand reaches down. His tiny fragile hand reaches out and wraps his perfect little fingers around hers. The crying has faded. A simple gesture as if to comfort him and let him know he was not alone. The room grows quiet except the hum of machines. A small smile forms on her gentle face. A soft expression looks back at him. She study’s the feel of his hand wrapped around her finger. The softness of his skin. She takes in the innocence of his face and eyes. Barely more than a whisper she says “Hush now little one, you’re going to be ok. You’re strong.” The softness of her voice brings a gentle smile to his face. Slowly she tucks her long brown hair behind her ear. The braid she wore religiously slowly becoming undone. if it was as tired as she was. She looks down at the tiny baby and remembers her daughters birth.a memory almost forgotten. A tear forms in her eyes and slides down her cheek. It’s warm against her skin in the cold air of the lab. “Doctor…” an urgent voice breaks the silence. She wipes the tear and lets go of his fragile hand. “The results..” a glimmer of hope and urgency in the young man’s voice. “Subject 0, is infact a success!” She stands up tall and walks away with the young man, she looks back once more, a slight pause as she looks back at the tiny baby, separated by the glass once more. For a small moment, she hesitated. Wanting to reach her hand back out one more time. Her other hand by instinct reaches in her pocket and touches the picture she kept as a reminder. She looks away and continues walking with the young man, this time she doesn’t look back.
